Galatians 5:13–15 CSB 13 For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement: Love your neighbor as yourself. 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another. We are free because we have been called by God in Christ. We are affirmed and loved by God before we know Him.We are called for a purpose - to be free!As we mentioned last week… we must guard against allowing legalism in again… by doing so we assume again the yoke of slavery. We must be careful with our freedom. Our freedom doesn’t give us license to sin.Even though our freedom is found in Christ we have the ability to misuse and pervert that freedom. The flesh will be struggle but we cannot indulge the lusts of the flesh.Legalism is a sure sign we are walking in the flesh or at least beginning to.One of the biggest dangers is the false assumption that our receiving life and freedom is not a gift of the Creator but by procuring it by our own power.Living from self rather than from God.The purpose of our freedom is not self-indulgence but it is for a purpose…Christian freedom is freedom to love and thus to serve.Paul is saying we should make ourselves slave to one anotherTrue freedom is realized in the slavery of loveThe passion and death of Jesus is the clearest picture of the slavery of love.Jesus told us that all of the law could be summed up like this: Matthew 22:37–40 “37 He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and most important command. 39 The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.””Paul is not saying that loving your neighbor is greater than the worship and adoration of God - loving your neighbor is the proof of it.Be careful… we can even take the freedom to serve and corrupt it by setting some artificial idea or standard of what it should look like - this is where legalism rears it’s ugly head again.A reminder: Legalism often leads to divisions.Biting and devouring is not conducive for unity. As a matter of fact they usually lead to destruction.Galatians 5:13–15CSB
