Galatians 6:6–18 CSB 6 Let the one who is taught the word share all his good things with the teacher. 7 Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a person sows he will also reap, 8 because the one who sows to his flesh will reap destruction from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. 9 Let us not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith. 11 Look at what large letters I use as I write to you in my own handwriting. 12 Those who want to make a good impression in the flesh are the ones who would compel you to be circumcised—but only to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 For even the circumcised don’t keep the law themselves, and yet they want you to be circumcised in order to boast about your flesh. 14 But as for me, I will never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The world has been crucified to me through the cross, and I to the world. 15 For both circumcision and uncircumcision mean nothing; what matters instead is a new creation. 16 May peace come to all those who follow this standard, and mercy even to the Israel of God! 17 From now on, let no one cause me trouble, because I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. 18 Brothers and sisters, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.Paul starts with a verse that appears to be an independent piece of advice that may not seem to connect with the surrounding passages but…The use of the words “good things” typically are speaking of financial support, which would not be out of place as Paul concludes his letter, but it could also be applied to a great many thingsThis verse speaks of the relationship between the teacher and the one receiving the instruction. The primary responsibility of the pastor, is to teach and preach the Word of God.While all other aspects of the ministry may be great… they must be subordinate to this fundamental task.God has chosen the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe (1 Corinthians 1:21 “21 For since, in God’s wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of what is preached.”There is a special relationship between those who dispense instruction in the Word and those who hear and receive it…As great as the monetary support the best “good thing” that could be shared is that as the listener you act on what is taughtAgain, the pastor is not a mere hireling… pastors will one day stand before God give an account of the ministry to which he was called and the message he was privileged to preach. You may be able to fool yourself but you cannot fool God.The work you do for the Kingdom will receive a paydayThe crop you plant will inevitably sprout forth in to a harvest… what are you sowing? If you are flesh focused or more concerned with your comfort, your desires, or your works then you may be sowing flesh and that will generally produce destruction and deathHowever, sowing things of the Spirit leads to life, eternal life….Keep pressing on, the harvest will come.Doing “good” can become a struggle - I remember swimming in the springs in Florida…. millions of gallons of water are rushing out deep from under the ground. Trying to swim down into the spring can be difficult because the spring is pushing back with everything it has but when you get to the bottom it is an amazing view“Swimming” against the world can be exhausting but the final destination is amazing.Paul’s analogy of sowing is good… working a field and bringing a crop to harvest is not an easy task but if you press on eventually will see the harvest brought in.The hardest part… being patient waiting for the harvest “at the proper time”Don’t get caught up in the external issues.Paul says both circumcision and uncircumcision are meaningless. In other words… all the extra junk we try and add to the Christian life are external or extra. It is all about Jesus, and a new life in Him.We cannot brag about our accomplishments but we can boast about what Jesus has done for us.The cross is something to brag about - the cross frees us from the sin that snares us.As followers of Jesus we are new creations - this is what matters. It is the internal, spiritual change and not the other things that we add to our walkWe can perform every so called Christian task but if we are not changed spiritually… we have nothing.Galatians 6:6–18CSB
