20260913 - Know Your SEASONingS
- SLIDE
Matthew 16:3 NLT 3 red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.’ You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the signs of the times!SLIDEOpeningChurch, I want to start today in a place you probably didn’t expect for a prophecy sermon: the kitchen. If you’ve ever cooked or eaten a pot of chili, a stew, a soup, or even a simple roast, you know how important seasonings are. You can have the best meat, the freshest vegetables, the finest stock —but if you get the seasonings wrong, the whole dish suffers. Too little salt, and everything tastes flat. Too much garlic, and people will remember your meal for all the wrong reasons. Mix up cinnamon with paprika, and you’ll have folks praying for deliverance at the dinner table.Know your Seasonings:Seasonings matter. And here’s the thing: you have to know your seasonings. You need to know what belongs in the pot and what doesn’t. You need to know what signals sweetness, what signals heat, what signals depth, and what signals danger. A good cook knows the difference between cumin and coriander, between basil and oregano, between chili powder and cayenne. They know the seasonings because they know the dish they’re making.Jesus tells us something very similar about prophecy.Just as a cook must know their seasonings, a Christian must know their seasons —the prophetic seasons, the signs of the times, the indicators that tell us where we are in God’s timetable. If you don’t know your seasonings, you ruin the meal. If you don’t know your seasons, you miss the moment. In Matthew 24:7–8, Jesus says:Matthew 24:7–8 NLT 7 Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. 8 But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come.Birth pains are like intensifying seasonings. At first, the flavor is mild. Then it grows stronger. Then it becomes impossible to ignore. Jesus is saying: pay attention to the flavor of the times, the intensity of the contractions, the pattern of events. These are not random; they are seasonings that tell you what season you’re in.Today, I want us to look at the seasonings of prophecy —the signs Jesus gave us to understand the season we are living in. We’ll look at Israel’s rebirth, nature’s groaning, society’s unraveling, global political alignment, Temple preparations, the red heifers, and spiritual warfare. Along the way, we’ll listen to voices like Arnold Fruchtenbaum, Hal Lindsey, Andy Woods, Ed Hindson, David Jeremiah, Mark Hitchcock, Jan Markell, Brannon Howse, Joel Richardson, Jimmy DeYoung, and Chuck Missler —all of them teachers who have spent their lives studying these things. My goal is not to frighten you. My goal is to help you know your seasonings —to recognize the season we’re in and respond with faith, hope, and urgency. So let’s move into the kitchen.Main teachingThe prophetic stew: IsraelLet’s start with the most obvious seasoning in the prophetic stew: Israel. For nearly two thousand years, the Jewish people were scattered across the world. No land. No sovereignty. No Hebrew spoken on the streets. No Temple. No nation. Then, on May 14, 1948, in a single day, Israel was reborn as a modern state. Isaiah 66:8 asks, “Can a nation be born in a day?” History answers: yes.Hal Lindsey famously said, “Israel is God’s timepiece.” Arnold Fruchtenbaum has called the rebirth of Israel “the most significant prophetic event since the ascension of Christ.” Andy Woods describes 1948 as “the reset of the prophetic clock.” Joel Rosenberg says, “Israel’s rebirth is the miracle that makes all other end-times prophecies possible.”Imagine a giant grandfather clock in God’s living room. For 1,900 years, the pendulum was still. Then in 1948—tick tock —and it hasn’t stopped since. The fig tree Jesus spoke of in Matthew 24 has put forth leaves. The season has changed. The seasoning has shifted. If you don’t know your seasonings, you might look at Israel and say, “That’s just politics.” But if you know your seasonings, you recognize that Israel’s rebirth is a key flavor in the prophetic dish. It tells you the kitchen is active, the meal is being prepared, and the time is moving forward. The Recipe Start: Creation ItselfNow, let’s look at another seasoning: creation itself.Jesus said there would be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes. Paul wrote in Romans 8:22 thatRomans 8:22 CSB 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together with labor pains until now.Today, we can actually measure some of that groaning.Seismologists report more frequent clusters of significant earthquakes in recent decades, and seismic activity in regions previously considered stable. Let’s look close to home: Did you know that right here is Indiana: We have had 44 earthquakes in the last 200+ years since 1817 , but 33 of those have happened in just the last 22 years. While Indiana's earthquakes are generally small they are happening faster. Meteorological agencies like NOAA document a sharp rise in extreme weather events —a 400% increase in billion-dollar disasters since the 1980s, storms that intensify rapidly, longer droughts, and more chaotic weather patterns. And just the other day here in Indiana we had historic flooding that is estimated to be well over 1.5 Billion dollars in clean-up costs alone. Public health authorities like the CDC and WHO note that infectious disease outbreaks have become more frequent and spread faster in a globally connected world. Antibiotic resistance and zoonotic spillovers raise the baseline risk for pandemics. Zoonotic means it spreads from animals to humans.Dr. Mark Hitchcock has said, “The earth is shaking because the King is coming.” That doesn’t mean every storm or every quake is a direct sign by itself. But it does mean the pattern of intensifying natural disturbance fits the picture Jesus painted of birth pains.I checked my weather app the other day, and it said, “Expect the unexpected.” That’s not a forecast; that’s almost a prophecy. Even the meteorologists are admitting, “We don’t really know what’s going on anymore.” But Jesus does. He told us the seasonings of nature would intensify as the season advanced.Seasoning is the Social & Moral ClimateAnother seasoning is the social and moral climate.Paul warned in 2 Timothy 3:1, “In the last days perilous times will come.” He described people as lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, abusive, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, without self-control, brutal, not loving good. When you read that list and then look at the headlines, it feels less like ancient text and more like a news summary.Statistics show rising rates of anxiety and depression, especially among young adults. Marriage rates are at historic lows. Violent crime has surged in many major cities. Gender confusion has exploded. Pornography consumption is at record highs. Loneliness is epidemic. Social media amplifies outrage and rewards deception.Ed Hindson used to say, “The world is not falling apart; it is falling into place.” David Jeremiah reminds us, “Prophecy is meant to prepare us, not scare us.” The moral and social seasonings of our time —confusion, deception, lawlessness —are exactly the flavors Jesus said would mark the last days.I saw a headline recently that said, “Normal is not returning.” I thought, “Well, at least they’re honest.” But for the believer, that’s not a cause for despair; it’s a reminder that we are not waiting for normal to return —we are waiting for Jesus to return. The seasonings of society tell us the season is advancing.Consider the Geopolitical SeasoningNow consider the geopolitical seasoning.Jesus said nation would rise against nation. Did you know that right now there are at least 15 major wars/conflicts worldwide. This according to War Death Data and the Global Conflict Tracker. Daniel and Revelation describe a world of shifting alliances and a final alignment under a powerful, deceptive leader. Today we see regional blocs forming —like the European Union, BRICS, ASEAN —global governance, and economic integration accelerating. We see technologies that enable unprecedented surveillance and control: central bank digital currencies, global supply chains, biometric identification, FLOCK cameras, and algorithmic monitoring.Jan Markell has said, “The world is not converging by accident. It is converging prophetically.” Brannon Howse warns that “the infrastructure of Revelation is being built in real time.” Joel Richardson notes that “globalism is not merely political; it is prophetic in its potential.”Prophecy is like a puzzle. For years, the pieces were scattered. Now they’re sliding into place so quickly that even un-believers are saying, “Something is happening.” The geopolitical seasonings —global alignment, economic control, surveillance capacity—these are intensifying. The season is aligning with what Scripture describes. The overlooked seasoning: The Third TempleOne of the most striking and often overlooked seasonings is the preparation for a Third Temple. In Jerusalem, the Temple Institute has spent decades recreating the sacred vessels described in the Old Testament. They have prepared priestly garments, trained Levites in sacrificial procedures, constructed a functional altar, and rehearsed liturgy. These are not museum pieces; they are functional items designed for actual use in a future Temple.Numbers 19 requires a perfect red heifer for the purification rites necessary to restore sacrificial worship. For centuries, there was no such animal. In recent years, however, a farmer from Texas has raised and inspected red heifer candidates. There are 5 of these red heifers in Shiloh, Israel right now. And there has been public discussion in Israel about the possibility of performing purification rites when political and religious conditions allow.Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, founder of the Temple Institute, has said, “For the first time in 2,000 years, everything needed for Temple service is ready.” Jimmy DeYoung used to say, “When you see the red heifer, lift up your head—redemption is drawing near.”Young men of Levitical lineage have been identified and trained in slaughter procedures, sacrificial rituals, incense preparation, and garment handling. The vessels are made. The garments are sewn. The priests are practicing. It’s like a theater company rehearsing for a play that hasn’t been announced yet. The props are ready. The actors know their lines. The lights are set. When the curtain rises, the performance will not be a surprise to those who prepared.Scripture indicates a Temple will play a role in the end-times narrative. 2 Thessalonians 2 speaks of the man of lawlessness taking his seat in the temple of God. Revelation 11 describes worship and testimony connected to a holy place. The practical readiness—vessels, garments, trained priests, red heifer candidates —is a powerful seasoning in the prophetic stew. It tells us the kitchen is not only active; it is almost ready to serve. The seasoning of Spiritual WarfareFinally, we must recognize the seasoning of spiritual warfare.Revelation 12:12 says, “The devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short.” Verse 17 says, “The dragon was enraged with the woman and went off to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.”We see rising persecution of Christians in many parts of the world. More than 380 million Christians worldwide now face high or extreme persecution — the highest level ever recorded. Open Doors 2026 World Watch ListReports 13 Christians killed per day for their faith.13 per day × 365 = 4,745 per year (approx).Over 10 years → ~47,450 Christians killed. We see increasing hostility toward biblical truth. Why even Curry’s Chapel Church content on the internet is receiving open hostility and and ill mannered responses. We see cultural pressure to silence Scripture, to redefine morality, to marginalize the gospel. We see spiritual numbness settling over nations, and even in the United States.Charles Stanley once said, “When the enemy fights hardest, it’s because God is closest.” The rage of the dragon is a sign that his time is short. The intensifying contractions of spiritual opposition are not random; they are part of the birth pains Jesus described. All these thingsIsrael’s rebirth, nature’s groaning, society’s unraveling, global alignment,Temple preparations, red heifers, spiritual warfareThese are all seasonings. They flavor the time we live in. They tell us the season is not ordinary. The contractions are closer. The intensity is higher. The prophetic kitchen is busy. Conclusion: Watch, Pray, StandSo what do we do with all this?Jesus gives us three simple commands in the face of these signs: watch, pray, and stand firm.Watching is not morbid fascination; it is sober discernment. It means knowing your seasonings —recognizing the signs of the times, understanding the season you’re in, and refusing to be lulled to sleep.Praying is not passive resignation; it is active dependence. It means crying out to God for wisdom, strength, and courage. It means interceding for the lost, for the church, for Israel, for our families.Standing firm is not stubborn isolation; it is faithful witness. It means holding to the testimony of Jesus, keeping His commandments, and living as citizens of the coming kingdom even while the present world shakes.Remember our opening illustration: if you don’t know your seasonings, you ruin the meal. If you don’t know your seasons, you miss the moment. God has given us the seasonings of prophecy not so we can panic, but so we can prepare; not so we can speculate, but so we can serve; not so we can hide, but so we can shine.A pastor once told of a woman in labor who grabbed him during a contraction and cried, “Pastor, pray!” He said, “I am praying!” She said, “Pray harder!” That is our posture in this season: pray harder, live holier, witness bolder. The fig tree has blossomed. Creation groans. Society shakes. Governments align. The Temple is being prepared. The red heifers are ready. The priests are trained. The vessels are complete. The Dragon is raging. The birth pains are intensifying.Church—know your SEASONingS. Know your season.Because when the contractions intensify, the delivery is near. And the One who promised to return is faithful.“Even so, come, Lord Jesus, come.”PrayerFather, thank You for meeting us in Your Word today. As we leave this message, quiet our hearts and steady our minds. Help us remember what You’ve shown us — not with fear, but with faith. Teach us to recognize the season we’re living in, to stay awake, to stay anchored in Scripture, and to stay close to You.Give us wisdom to discern, courage to stand firm, and peace to trust Your timing.Keep our eyes lifted, our hearts ready, and our lives faithful until You come.In Jesus’ name, amen.
