    Introduction
Peter looking back on his actions during the trial of Jesus...
    Walking on Water
    Rebuking Jesus
    Cutting off Ear
    Denying Jesus 3 Times
    Transition
Lack of faith wasn’t peter’s problem. His problem was that he failed to make the right choices in the worst moments.
    Review 1 Peter, and Context.
    Roadmap
BIG IDEA: The mark of a Christian is not doing what’s good in our best moments, but in our worst.
    1 Peter 3:8 NET 2nd ed.
Finally, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, affectionate, compassionate, and humble.
Peter did none of those things.
    Point
    Statement
Because you were called to inherit a blessing.
    Explanation
    1 Peter 3:9–12 NET 2nd ed.
Do not return evil for evil or insult for insult, but instead bless others because you were called to inherit a blessing. For the one who wants to love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from uttering deceit. And he must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and his ears are open to their prayer. But the Lord’s face is against those who do evil.
Calling/Election, used multiple times, refers to God’s call to Abram in Gen 22:18
    Genesis 22:18 NIV
and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”
    Illustration
When you leave an inheritance you have the right to put stipulations on it.
    Application
When we meet people who are nasty, we should think that they are under the curse of sin and need a blessing.
    Transition
    Point
    Statement
Because Christ did the same for us.
    Explanation
    1 Peter 3:13 NET 2nd ed.
For who is going to harm you if you are devoted to what is good?
    Peter is speaking proverbially
    1 Peter 3:14 NET 2nd ed.
But in fact, if you happen to suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. But do not be terrified of them or be shaken.
    Peter learned this from Jesus...
    Matthew 5:11–12 NET 2nd ed.
Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things about you falsely on account of me. Rejoice and be glad, because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.
“On the right side of history”
    1 Peter 3:15–17 NET 2nd ed.
But set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts and always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope you possess. Yet do it with courtesy and respect, keeping a good conscience, so that those who slander your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame when they accuse you. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if God wills it, than for doing evil.
We often use this as a call for apologetics. For Peter’s Audience this was more likely thought of in terms of being questioned and on trial.
The reason they ought to be able to stand up and do what is good, even at their worst is because Christ did the same for us.
    1 Peter 3:18 NET 2nd ed.
Because Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, to bring you to God, by being put to death in the flesh but by being made alive in the spirit.
    Application
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
    Illustration
Peter lived this out, and was crucified upside down.
    Transition
    Point
    Statement
Because of the oath you made when you became a Christian.
    Explanation
    1 Peter 3:19–20 NET 2nd ed.
In it he went and preached to the spirits in prison, after they were disobedient long ago when God patiently waited in the days of Noah as an ark was being constructed. In the ark a few, that is eight souls, were delivered through water.
    Pause and explain.
    2 Major views.
1 Jesus preached and offered salvation to those who were under the Old covenant system.
2 Jesus proclaimed his victory over death and evil
Second one makes a little more sense in the context.
    1 Peter 3:21–22 NET 2nd ed.
And this prefigured baptism, which now saves you—not the washing off of physical dirt but the pledge of a good conscience to God—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who went into heaven and is at the right hand of God with angels and authorities and powers subject to him.
    Argumentation
Because of Christ’s Victory over death, you are able to do what is good even at your worst
You participate in his death in Baptism
The water isn’t magic, it’s a pledge of a good conscience (Oath)
    Illustration
The Bible is clear that being a disciple of Christ is a life-long commitment.
Every time you (Gather, take communion, etc) you are recommitting yourself to life as a disciple of Christ.
    Application
    1 Peter 3:8 NET 2nd ed.
Finally, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, affectionate, compassionate, and humble.
If for no other reason than that’s what you signed up to do. Not just to those who love you and who are good to you, but to those who hate you and persecute you.
    Conclusion
As we think about Peter of All people writing this, if anyone had a leg to stand on to teach this it was him.
He had made the mistakes, and he lived it.
    3 Times he denied Jesus.
    John 21:15–17 NET 2nd ed.
Then when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these do?” He replied, “Yes, Lord, you know I love you.” Jesus told him, “Feed my lambs.” Jesus said a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He replied, “Yes, Lord, you know I love you.” Jesus told him, “Shepherd my sheep.” Jesus said a third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that Jesus asked him a third time, “Do you love me?” and said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus replied, “Feed my sheep.
