1 Peter 4:1–11 “So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin, in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires. For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries. So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you. They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. Now it was for this very purpose that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh by human standards they may live spiritually by God’s standards. For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer. Above all keep your love for one another fervent, because love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without complaining. Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God. Whoever speaks, let it be with God’s words. Whoever serves, do so with the strength that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.”
    Introduction
Bob Ross. Getting to see the transformation take place while he paints.

    Transformation

    Transition
Watching a painting being transformed from a blank canvas to a landscape is a lot like the transformation that takes place in the life of the believer.
    Roadmap
    Summary of 1 Peter 1-3.
Chapter 3: Christians suffering under persecution. Peter is reminding them that they are a new creation in Christ.
As such, they should be living transformed lives.
For the Christian, tracking the transformation process can be frustrating.
What does transformation in the life of the Christian actually look like?
    Point
    Number 1
Transformation starts with a change of mind
    Explanation
    1 Peter 4:1–2 NET 2nd ed.
So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin, in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires.
    Same Mind.
    Philippians 2:4–5 NET 2nd ed.
Each of you should be concerned not only about your own interests, but about the interests of others as well. You should have the same attitude toward one another that Christ Jesus had,
    Romans 12:2 NET 2nd ed.
Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God—what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.
[Expand] If you want to see transformation, it starts with having a transformed mind.
    Argumentation
Not by our own will power, but through God.
    Philippians 2:12–13 NET 2nd ed.
So then, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, continue working out your salvation with awe and reverence, for the one bringing forth in you both the desire and the effort—for the sake of his good pleasure—is God.

Example: Addiction, the first step to quitting is wanting to quit.
    Application
What happens, when you want to quit (or maybe you just want to WANT to quit)
    Prayer
    Spend time with other Christians
Spend time with God—Eventually what will happen is that you will find that you love God more than you love your sin.
    Trust the process.
    Transition
One or two sentences to smoothly shift to the next part
    Point
    Statement
    Change of Behavior
    Explanation
    1 Peter 4:3–4 NET 2nd ed.
For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries. So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you.
The amazing thing about being transformed by the HS, slowly but surely you stop craving sin.
You might not recognize the change, because it happens slowly. But the people around you will notice.
    Argumentation
This is why it’s so difficult, and why people don’t notice their own transformation, because for them it happens little by little every day.
    Illustration
    My story, transformation, etc.
    Application
If you have that old life, watch out for temptation to fall back in to that old lifestyle.
    Transition
Ultimately, the only thing waiting for you there is death. You were saved from death, so watch out not to go back.
    1 Peter 4:5–7 NET 2nd ed.
It gets personal for Peter. He’s reminding them of those who they knew and loved who have since passed on.
Many of whom were probably killed for their faith.
He reminds them that they live on in eternity.
    Last point.
Verses 3-6 are about the transformation process of removing sin. But there’s something very important that needs to happen next.
    Point
    Statement
Replacing your sin with something good.
    Explanation
    1 Peter 4:7–11 NET 2nd ed.
Amen.
The part of transformation that is so important that we often miss is replacing what we used to do with something good.
    Argumentation
    Luke 11:24–26 NET 2nd ed.
“When an unclean spirit goes out of a person, it passes through waterless places looking for rest but not finding any. Then it says, ‘I will return to the home I left.’ When it returns, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there, so the last state of that person is worse than the first.”
Here, Jesus is talking about replacing unclean spirits being replaced by the holy spirit. [Expand]
likewise when we don’t replace sin with self control, hospitality, service, etc.…
    Luke 11:27–28 NET 2nd ed.
As he said these things, a woman in the crowd spoke out to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts at which you nursed!” But he replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!”
    Illustration
In counseling, they teach you to say “what are you going to be doing instead of...”
    Application
Fill your life with Good things.
    Transition
Transformation: 1) Changed Mind. 2) Changed Behavior 3) Replacing the sin with things that are Good.
    Conclusion
As we think about our spiritual transformation. when we give our life to Christ, he wipes us clean, as a clean slate.
    1 John 1:9 NET 2nd ed.
But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, forgiving us our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness.
We’re like a blank canvas, and God is the artist, who is transforming us day by day into his masterpiece.
    Ephesians 2:10 NET 2nd ed.
For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we may do them.
As we are continuously in relationship with God, he shapes us and molds us and causes us to live transformed lives.
