House Rules-What are the Non negotiable rules in yoru house
    Accepting Consequences

    The Ten Commandments

    No other gods
    No Idols
    Misuse the Lord’s Name
    Remember the Sabbath
    Honor your Father and Mother
    No murder
    No Adultery
    No Stealing
    No Lying
    No coveting
This is a pretty simple list of “non-negotiables”
Yet this isn’t the entire list in many ways this was just the start for God and how his people are to live. Yet, these are the starting point
Why though is this the list?
How do you think the people responded or are expected to respond?
    Exodus 20:20 NIV
20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”

    Don’t be, but be afraid?

Alright I think Moses got a little confused.
Don’t be afraid but have fear of God
Tell me do we have anything to be afraid of God for if we are wiling to follow what he commands us to do?
The Fear the Israelites had was because they saw the thunder and the lighting and hear the trumpet and saw the mountain covered in smoke.
    They Recognized God’s Presence
They also had plenty of recent history to understand what that might mean
Moses though calls the peopel to allow God to test them to see that Fear or respect will keep them from sinning.
    Let’s ask this question though

Is it wrong to fear the consequences of Sin?

    Remember my house rule?
In today’s church we often don’t like talking about the consequences of our sin because there is a part of us that feels like that the grace of God is somehow less because there are consequences for our actions.
Don’t get me wrong this kind of message can be very powerful
    Hellfire and Brimstone
We like the idea of grace because it is more palatable.
Yet, if we want to be honest we have to talk about the consequences.
Think of it this way, Is it wrong to fear the consequences of driving a car off a cliff?
Fear of sin is not a bad thing but the New testament allows us to see that we have a deeper message.
    Philippians 3:7–14 NIV
7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

    Prevention v. Devotion

We can recognize that God wants us to fear the consequences of sin and love and devote ourselves to him thus avoiding the consequences of sin
Christ came so that we could be free from the bonds of sin. That we could gain victory over it.
He calls us as Paul says it to run the race
to hold dear and rise above simply being afraid and seeing that it is in our relationship with him that we find hope and strength and meaning in life.
Jesus paid it all so that we could be free
He came to be the bridge that heals the gap between us and God. Not so fear but love binds us.
