Exodus 32:1–6 NIV 1 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.” 2 Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.” 5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.” 6 So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.ImpatienceThere is no doubt the Impatience hurts relationshipsWhen we get short with people we get snippy, or we start making choices because we are frustratedWe don’t ever see that as a problem these days do weWe need to move forward those couple extra inchesSam’s club gasThe israelites were impatientYes Moses was gone for 40 days and nightsThey wanted answers they couldn’t waitWhere did they turn...ThemselvesTruth is they wanted to deal with God on their own termsThey wanted to understand to bring in the ritualism of their faithThinking about this and how the people in the desert wanted to worship something and what that means to us today.I was reading about worship when I came across this quote.Everyone more or less believes in God. But most of us do our best to keep God on the margins of our lives or, failing that, refashion God to suit our convenience … One of the bad habits that we pick up early in our lives is separating things and people into secular and sacred. We assume that the secular is what we are more or less in charge of: our jobs, our time, our entertainment, our government, our social relations. The sacred is what God has charge of: worship and the Bible, heaven and hell, church and prayers. We then contrive to set aside a sacred place for God, designed, we say, to honor God but really intended to keep God in His place, leaving us free to have the final say about everything else that goes on-Eugene PetersonDo we live this?We assume that the secular is what we are more or less in charge of: our jobs, our time, our entertainment, our government, our social relations. The sacred is what God has charge of: worship and the Bible, heaven and hell, church and prayers.Lunch Tray FaithAre we in danger of separating our life out into different segments where they don’t meet each other.Let’s begin by talking about what this isn’tLunch Tray FaithPutting us in charge of how things are managedNot letting God in outside of ChurchDriven by our desiresLunch Tray FaithWe can’t escape that there are many ways we keep things separated.this is deeper than just the sins in the eyes of the church. One of the big challenges we face is not the idol worship that the Israelites face it is something much more nefarious. It is far more deceptive and sneakyMatthew 22:1–14 NIV 1 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. 4 “Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’ 5 “But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. 6 The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. 7 The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. 9 So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless. 13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”Missing the BanquetImagine for a moment that God sent you his invitation to come to his event How would you respond?Of course we would say yes. Right?!Are we saying yes?OH man am I willing to go or am I busy with my field or some other business? Are you giving him everything. are you ready to answer the call of the servants? What are you wearing? At the end of the Matthew passage we have this small extra addition about what we are wearing. This is the hope for all of us.I know i have been laying it on heavy and I hope it is Challenging us to think about how we are spending our time and building our relationship with God.This part of the passage can be seen as a complete negative. The King threw out a guy for not wearing the right thingMaybe we can think about it this way.IF he would would have changed would he have been accepted?God is wanting to see us move and change who we are. To be a new creation in HimThe hope is that the invitation is sent. We can accept it, but part of accepting it is simply the commitment to change. To try and shift who we are to show we want to be a part of the banquet. Exodus 32:1–6NIV2011
