  • Eythan Read slowly standing next to the table:
    Luke 22:7–14 NASB95
7 Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.” 9 They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10 And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters. 11 “And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 “And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there.” 13 And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover. 14 When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him.
    Eythan:
This morning, we’re not just preaching a message…
Eythan pull out chair for Casia
We are inviting you to a table.
    Casia sit while saying:
    A table of deliverance..
    A table of sacrifice…
    And Ultimately…
    Gesture toward the empty chair
    A table of invitation.
    Eythan sit while saying:
Many times throughout scripture, God uses a table to tell a story..
    Casia
Like when the woman with the alabaster jar anointed the feet of Jesus while He was at the table…
That table became a place of judgement from the religious pharisee who questioned the judgement of Jesus, but it was a place of forgiveness for the woman when Jesus defended her.
    Eythan
Or when Jesus decided to eat with the outcasts in Matthew 9 and the pharisees asked the disciples:
    Matthew 9:11–12 NASB95
11 “Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick.
This is the pattern we see from Jesus: you don’t get cleaned up to come to Him. You come to Him, then He cleans you up.
The pharisees wanted the people to earn their way to the table, but Jesus invited them just as they were, because you can’t earn your way into God’s presence with good works; rather, you get in His presence and experience transformation that forms you into who God has called you to be.
It doesn’t work the other way, because sin isn’t just a burden, it’s a master that enslaves all those subject to it.
    Casia
    John 8:34 NASB95
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.
Which is why this moment when Jesus comes to sit down at the table with His disciples to celebrate the Passover is so significant.
They are celebrating together the deliverance of Israel out of slavery in Egypt…
Summarize the story of how Israel became enslaved in Egypt.
    But God said to Moses:
    Exodus 3:7 NASB95
7 The Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings.
    Eythan
So God sends Moses to tell Pharoah, “Let my people go!”
But Pharoah refuses and God’s answer is to show up in power for His people.
Not only does He show up in power, but He makes fools of every Egyptian god through the ten plagues.
Each of the plagues is a direct hit on something their gods either were, or were supposed to control.
He turns water into blood, sends frogs in by the drove, swarms of gnats or lice and flies, the livestock start dying, boils start showing up on the Egyptians, hail and fire rain down from heaven, locusts start eating the crops, and there were three days of what the bible calls a “darkness that can be felt.”
This is one of my favorite lines right here:
    Exodus 10:23 NASB95
23 They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days, but all the sons of Israel had light in their dwellings.
There was darkness everywhere in Egypt, but the light was on in the land of Goshen!
    Casia
And yet, Pharoah still did not let them go…
So Israel remained trapped in Egypt as slaves…
They weren’t just tired… They were owned… Property of Pharoah…
All their hopes and dreams, all the promises of God given generations before, none of it seemed to matter in this moment as Pharoah still refused to let them go.
So God tells Moses, get ready. Death is coming to the land…
Then He gives them the instructions to escape death…
But it wasn’t a strategy for deliverance. It wasn’t a battle plan. It wasn’t even building blueprints to keep death out…
No, the strategy for escaping death was a seat at The Table & The Lamb…
Death was going to pass through the camp that night, but this time it wasn’t their history, their lineage, nor their efforts that would deliver them from its hand…
It was the blood. And everything was about to hinge on whether they and their house were marked with it.
    Eythan
Because freedom didn’t start at the Red Sea… It started at the table…
God told them to raise a lamb, and not just any lamb… a spotless lamb without blemish… examined meticulously… not broken or lacking in any way…
He didn’t want a leftover that was going to die anyway. He wanted one to represent the perfect Lamb that was to come…
God tells them, take the lamb and kill it, then sprinkle the blood on the doorposts of the house, then set the table…
    Exodus 12:11–13 NASB95
11 ‘Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is the Lord’s Passover. 12 ‘For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the Lord. 13 ‘The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
This is where the feast of Passover is established. This is the point where Israel is delivered out of Egypt.
    Casia
And this is the feast Jesus is sitting down at the table to eat with His disciples.
To this day, Passover is celebrated by the Jewish people with a plate similar to one of these…
Lift a plate to show everyone
With each place on the plate representing an element of the first passover.
There is usually a roasted lamb shank that represents the lamb that was sacrificed…
Bitter herbs, representing the bitter lives of slavery lived in Egypt.
A green vegetable dipped in salt water, representing the tears shed by the enslaved.
And a sweet mixture of chopped nuts, apples, wine, and cinnamon, representing the mortar used by the slaves to build.
On the table is often unleavened bread, which is what Jesus would have reached for at the last supper. The unleavened bread is what they prepared to eat as they went, knowing their departure would be in haste.
Which is also why this is sometimes called the feast of unleavened bread.
This is what the disciples would have prepared when Jesus sent them….
    Eythan
But there is something different at this passover meal, unlike any that had come before it.
Each passover meal prepared since the first one in Egypt had always included a representation of the lamb on the table, but at this passover meal, the lamb was not just on the table, He was also At the Table.
Because Jesus didn’t just come as a Messiah and deliverer, He came as a spotless lamb, the sacrifice to turn away death and break the bonds of the slavery of sin…
That’s why when John the baptist saw Jesus coming through the crowd he declared:
    John 1:29 NASB95
29 …“Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
    and again:
    John 1:35–36 NASB95
35 Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”
    Peter later says,
    1 Peter 1:18–19 NASB95
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
    Casia
    And look at the timing:
1 Cor. 11 tells us the Last Supper was on the same night Jesus was betrayed, and that night, according to Luke, also happened to be:
    Luke 22:7 NASB95
7 Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
So not only is Jesus called the Lamb, but He is betrayed, arrested, and His first drops of blood are spilled at the same time the passover lamb is being sacrificed for Israel…
Jesus wasn’t just any Lamb, He was THE Lamb…
And just as the spotless lamb had to be examined and found to be without blemish, Jesus lived a perfect life, was put on trial, and was found by Pilate to be without fault, yet was sacrificed so His blood would halt the hand of judgement and death…
We read the story of passover and picture Israel, but the story of passover isn’t just about an event in Egypt. It’s about us…
Just as Israel was in the bonds of slavery in Egypt, so we were bound in slavery to sin.
We weren’t just making bad decisions, we were being controlled by a bad ruler.
And just like they needed a lamb, we needed one too!
    Eythan
Because death was coming to our house…
    Romans 3:23 NASB95
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
    Romans 5:12 NASB95
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
    Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death…
    James said it this way:
    James 1:15 NASB95
15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
Just as that quiet night in Egypt, death was headed to our house, and the only thing separating us from certain destruction is the Lamb and His name is JESUS!
He came as God’s perfect lamb, sacrificed as our passover lamb…
Not because of who we are, or what we have done, but because of His grace and mercy…
    Casia
And just as God invited Israel a seat at the table of Passover, and Jesus sat at the table with His disciples, so too are you invited to sit at the Lord’s Table…
Here’s the key: It all comes down to the blood.
Israel set the table, but the blood had to be on the doorpost of the house…
In the same way, we are inviting you to sit at the table, but the blood of the lamb must be on the doorpost of your heart.
This morning, you have the same decision as Israel in Egypt and the disciples at the Last Supper… Will you accept the blood that was sacrificed for you?
Saying yes to Jesus is not a work to be done, but a surrender of everything to Him.
He gave of His body and His blood:
    1 Corinthians 11:23–25 NASB95
23 …the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
    Will you accept this gift?
    Eythan
That night in Egypt… and later the night of the last supper… a decision had to be made. Will you trust in the Lamb?
For those who did, death passed over and fulfillment came alive.
    And today, nothing has changed.
You can’t fight your way through sin or earn your way into grace.
    You just trust the Lamb.
    Call Worship Team
    Casia
If you’ve never trusted Jesus… this is your moment.
If you feel like you’re owned by sin, this is your freedom.
This table represents a decision: I’m not staying where I was, I’m trusting in the Lamb.
Will you come and accept what God has for you?
Come to this table, and let us pray with you?
Give those who come a moment and a chair. Explain that surrendering to Jesus is just like sitting down at the table. It’s not just giving up, it’s giving in to His drawing.
Then give them the chance to physically sit at the table as their answer.
Take time to pray with them and have everyone celebrate the moment
    Eythan
Now that those who will have decided, there’s one more thing to do today:
    1 Cor. 11:26 says:
    1 Corinthians 11:26 NASB95
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
So today, we are going to proclaim the Lord’s death.
Please come forward and let us serve you the bread and the cup. You can hold them and we will all partake together.
Everyone is welcome at the Lord’s Table.
    Casia
Let everyone be served at the table, then return to their seat.
    Once everyone is back seated:
    1 Corinthians 11:23–24 NASB95
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
    Please take of the bread.
    Eythan
    1 Corinthians 11:25–26 NASB95
25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
    Please take of the cup.
And we do so with a shout of proclamation on our lips because His blood caused death to pass us by and brought victory and deliverance to our house!
