- Recap Gospel Season intentionFor those of you who are still unsure what this Christian life is all about, this season will be important for you as it is the Gospel that defines who we are in Christ, what our life should look like, and it is the power by which we are propelled into that life. For those of you who have experienced the power of the gospel to save, this season will be important to you as it is the central message of discipleship used throughout the epistles to orient the reader and bring clarity to the scriptures. In other words, the gospel is not just evangelistic, it is also the cornerstone of our faith..You don’t experience the gospel then move past it… You experience the gospel then grow deeper into it.If you read through the New Testament, you find out that the Gospel is not just preached to the lost, it is constantly taught to the believers as well.Because the Gospel is more than just a doorway to salvation, it is the lens through which we view life.It is the power through which we overcome. And in it is found the transformation that we experience as we journey through life.Paul said it this way:
1 Corinthians 9:23 NASB95 23 I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it.If the Gospel is to be so central, we must first define…What is the Gospel?NT Wright, a prominent faith thinker and theologian defines the gospel this way,Evangelical Theology: A Biblical and Systematic Introduction § 1.3 What Is the Gospel? The gospel is the royal announcement that the crucified and risen Jesus, who died for our sins and rose again according to the Scriptures, has been enthroned as the true Lord of the world. When this gospel is preached, God calls people to salvation, out of sheer grace, leading them to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as the risen Lord.
The word “Gospel” is used over 75 times throughout scripture and it simply means… Good News.It is the Good News that brings joy to those who hear that Jesus reigns and has provided a way through Himself to the throne of God.Colossians 2:13–14 NASB95 13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. This is the message of the Gospel! That He did what we could not do in ourselves! He paid the debt we owed, cancelling out the decrees against us and nailing them to the cross. It was described to the Church at Rome by the Apostle Paul as that…Romans 1:2–4 NASB95 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,He goes on in that same chapter to declare:Romans 1:16 NASB95 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…This Gospel is not just a story to be told, it is a power to experience! In it is the power to live a life set apart for the work of the Kingdom!1 Corinthians 1:18 NASB95 18 For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.The Gospel is not just for entry, it is also for empowerment in life!1 Corinthians 15:1 NASB95 1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand…Stand on the Gospel! It is the foundation on which we base everything else. Our very life is what the scripture calls “participation in the Gospel.”The Gospel doesn’t just save, it also bears fruit:Colossians 1:5–6 NASB95 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel 6 which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth;Which is why we aren’t just to receive Christ, but also walk in Him:Colossians 2:6 NASB95 6 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,This Gospel doesn’t just give us entry then leave us to do it on our own…That was the error of the Church at Galatia…Galatians 3:1–3 NASB95 1 You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? 2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? No! We are changed by the power of the Gospel into something entirely new!2 Corinthians 5:17–21 NASB95 17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.This is the message of the Gospel! This is the power of the Gospel! That not only would the old pass away, but that something new takes its place!Being a Christian is not just a list of rules and restrictions, it is the opportunity to become all that God has called you to be!The power of the Gospel is not just to forgive your sin, but to give you power over sin, that you may live a life of victory as more than a conquerer in Christ Jesus.Galatians 2:20 NASB95 20 “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.Galatians 5:24–25 NASB95 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.I don’t want you to just accept the message of the Gospel as a ticket out of judgement… That reduced the power of the Gospel simply to a legal declaration, but it’s that and more! The Gospel the power by which we live as Christians! The Gospel is the root of our identity, having become a new creation! The Gospel is the lens through which we view all of life! The Gospel is the frame that shapes how we see others! The Gospel is the promise to which the all those who came before looked forward to according to Hebrews 11:39-12:3Hebrews 11:39–12:3 NASB95 39 And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40 because God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they would not be made perfect. 1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. That great cloud of witnesses all looked forward to the promise of a coming Messiah and His name is Jesus!Through Him we live and move and have our being!By His Gospel we are saved and empowered to live a life of freedom! This is the central story of Scripture, the thing to which all others point…It was this very perspective shared by Jesus Himself on the road to Emmaus:Recap Emmaus walk story in contextAnd Jesus said to them…Luke 24:25–26 NASB95 25 And He said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 “Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?”But here’s the central point… In theology we call this a Christological Hermeneutic:Luke 24:27 NASB95 27 Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.Remember, at this point the New Testament hadn’t been written yet, so which scriptures are they talking about? They are talking about the Old Testament! Genesis through Malachi!Jesus is saying, all that was written about ME!The Gospel of Jesus didn’t just begin at Christmas. It started from the very beginning in the Garden with Adam and Eve, but all these looked forward to Him who was to come…Romans 5:14 NASB95 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.Look at this just a few verses later:Romans 5:17 NASB95 17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. Those who receive the abundance of grace and the GIFT of righteousness…The GIFT of righteousness… Not the righteousness you earn. Not the righteousness you work up.. the GIFT of righteousness…will REIGN IN LIFE! Not just in heaven, not just once we cross over… not just in the future…If you receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness you will REIGN IN LIFE through JESUS!What we will see as we explore the patterns and pictures of the Gospel throughout the scriptures in the coming weeks is that so often the failure of mankind is connected directly with the need to earn it or do it ourselves rather than receive the gift of righteousness and the abundant grace offered.Even today, I think it is that same temptation that binds those who do not accept the GIFT of grace and righteousness. We would rather try to muscle through or do it ourselves or hide it or ignore it hoping it goes away, but the gospel is such that it is a full exchange of everything we are for everything HE is…Romans 6:1–8 NASB95 1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,The Gospel is your invitation and empowerment to die to the old and live in the new.2 Thessalonians 2:14 NASB95 14 It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the power of the Gospel. This is the necessity of the Gospel.Yes there are eternal consequences, but this is also about the life you will live in the here and now. That was my introduction.Call Worship TeamHere’s what I suspect… There are many who are living life in defeat, struggling day to day, uncertain who they are supposed to be, and you’ve been coming in here hoping to find answers…And the Gospel is your answer. It’s the power to salvation, and it is the power to live.I think there are many who live under the banner of Christianity that have never accepted the gift of Grace and Righteousness as it is presented in scripture. You’re not a Christian because you go to church. You’re a Christian because you died to everything you are and found your identity in Him.My question to you today is: “Have you received this gift?”Have you let all the old die in the waters of baptism and been resurrected as something entirely new?Are you living as a new creation or are you trying to put the Christian stamp on the life you already had, hoping it will be enough? Will you accept the Good News of this Gospel and receive the gift of transformation? Will you be made new? 1 Corinthians 9:23NASB95
