- “Weeds in the Garden” Part 2K. Adrian ScottJune 29, 2025Matthew 13. 24-30“Weeds in the Garden” (Part 2)K. Adrian ScottJune 29, 2025Review and Context.“He put another parable before them, saying, the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field.”Since a kingdom must have a king, both phrases then refer to the all-encompassing universal authority of Jesus Christ as the High King of Heaven and the eternal Son of God. The kingdom of heaven does not represent a physical presence here on the earth but refers to God’s reign as Father, Son and Holy Ghost in the soul, the spiritual heart or conscience of everyone born in this physical world. The kingdom is a “spiritual” economy as opposed to a physical or earthly economy.According to John 5.17, the text says this, But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”It is clear to me and others that Jesus is the person described as the “Sower” and thus He is referring to Himself as the “Lord off the Harvest” (Matt. 9.38). While on earth, clearly Jesus is “a man who sowed.” We now see the Sower has good intentions for the field as he plants or sows “good” seed and he plants the good seed in his field. The field belongs to the Sower, so there is ownership!“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24.1). The field belongs to the Sower because he paid for it – “He is the propitiation (satisfying our sin debt with the Father) for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2.2).Were there times the Sower walked the field and envisioned only what he could see and what he wanted for the field. He had grand ideas and a plan for his field. In my mind’s eye, the Sower had walked every inch of his property, and he knew it all too well. He wasn’t surprised with its odd shapes, the crooked edges, the lumpy sections and the damp spots but he still bought it. This is the Sower’s field, and he loved it.V. 25; “but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.”Most likely, they were sleeping at home after their work for the day was done.Early on we get an indication that whatever was done by the enemy; whatever evil he concocted; whatever wickedness he spread onto the field among the “good” seed, shared the same soil, benefitted from the same sun and drank the same water as the “good” seed, and like the “good” seed, it grew also!Do you see the goodness of God; the patience of God, that while even doing wrong and using the resources and energy God provided because of God’s common grace, God did not withhold the rich minerals from the soil, refuse to share His rain, nor stop His sun from shining! Even the evil in the world benefits from God’s grace even though he is “His enemy.” Who else would exhibit such long patience and wide mercy with “His enemy” but God? Who else has such holy virtue, such divine kindness, and gracious generosity toward even “His enemy” but the Lord? Jesus said in His Sermon on the Mount we, as His disciples, should “bless those who curse you and pray for those who abuse you” (Luke 6. 28). “His enemy” waited until nighttime, when the field workers were tired and asleep to do their work! This is an attempt to undue the good work that the Sower had already done. We also know the work the enemy did while the field workers slept was dishonorable and destructive. And when they were finished with their evil work, they “went away.” The enemy left without detection or notice.V.26: “So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?”Here is the tendency of the enemy to hide his wicked work even while good work is being done. One works planting good seeds through righteous works while at the very same time, the wicked one is sowing weeds, or what the KJV translates “tares” while the strict Greek translation more accurately translates ‘darnel’ or “Lolium temulentum” were planted, actually ‘poisonous weeds’ which according to the NET Bible “has an uncanny resemblance to wheat until the ears of grain appear.” This weed is so dangerous that if eaten, the NET Bible says, it will make the person who eats it experience a feeling of drunkenness and can even cause death. Here is a reminder; a warning to the church of the living God that “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father in heaven” (Matthew 7.21).In Satan, the enemy planting dangerous weeds in the same field at the same time as the Sower, Jesus Christ, it tells us something important: Satan is trying to claim his what truly belongs to God!It is important for us to remember there is the ‘visible’ church and the true and ‘invisible’ church. Belonging to the kingdom of God is the result of a genuine, credible, spiritual experience with the Lord; and that experience I am referring to is having been born again by the Holy Spirit. However, to be a member of the ‘visible’ church does not necessarily mean a person has had a ‘born again’ experience with God. Because you attend worship or contribute to the church, volunteer for projects, drive a bus, cut the grass, or do many other things and it will not qualify you to be a part of the Kingdom of God, nor does it mean we are Christians. Especially being a pastor’s child, I was in church more than most, but I was not a Christian until I became born from above! “Unless you are born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” Let me make it as clear as I can; everyone must be born again if they want to be a part of the Kingdom of Heaven! Now, how does a person know they are re-born of the Spirit? Well, if it was a genuine rebirth, everything about you changes. The way you see yourself has changed because you will be humbledby the power of the Holy Spirit who has pricked your heart and convicted you of your sin. You will see yourself as you have never seen yourself before. You will not see yourself as this beautiful or handsome person, but you will first have an overwhelming sense of relief when we were shown our sin by the Holy like we have never seen it before while at the same time the Lord also shows us how He has freely forgiven us of that sin, and we leave from that profound experience clearly seeing ourselves profoundly grateful and knowing for the first time we are not worthy of God’s incredible grace and mercy. Now, having said all these things, does it mean you should pick up your Holy Ghost magnifying glass and be suspicious of everyone? No, not in my opinion, but what it does mean is we should be wise to the enemy’s efforts to cause harm and even kill the work of Christ in the world, and every corner of it. If a person has tendencies to exhibit behavior that is destructive rather than behavior that builds up; behavior, including speech that casts seeds of dissension rather than resulting in unity; words of discouragement rather than encouragement; then you must do what the Bible says and separate yourself from that person because they may very well be a weed and not real wheat. If their behavior resembles dangerous weeds rather than healthy wheat, then you must acknowledge it for what it is, even if it means you will lose a ‘friend’ if that is what you call them. I don’t have friends who are not godly and wise people. I have ministers I know who I don’t fraternize with for that very reason.Question.Why are weeds growing up with the wheat? Because God allows the wheat to grow with the tare!
