- Measured with Mercy: The Call to Judge Righteously
Revelation 11:1–2 NASB 95 1 Then there was given me a measuring rod like a staff; and someone said, “Get up and measure the temple of God and the altar, and those who worship in it. 2 Leave out the court which is outside the temple and do not measure it, for it has been given to the nations; and they will tread under foot the holy city for forty-two months.Measured with Mercy: The Call to Judge RighteouslyIntroductionWhat does it mean to be measured?Measuring can be for protection, restoration as in preparing for some change that is about to take place.Or measuring can refer to an expected understanding and those not making it to the correct measurement are to be destroyed.Tell story of being measured during a physical exam. When my children were small they were often taken to the pediatrician. There they were measured, length, weight, head circumference. The measurements taken are charted and a comparison made. Those comparisons made by a physician can help him to determine if anything is deficient or lacking in your body.We are measured in other ways as well.Tests are a measurement of our knowledge of a subject.Again comparison is made and we are taught based on our short comings. But the measurements discussed this morning are infinitely more seriousRemember we have taken a breather between the 6th and 7th trumpet judgments. We have learned the importance of the bitter sweet little book.We are to take that book and eat it so that it becomes our life.Jesus takes us aside to point out some things that are very important. One of them is that we will be measured.Who are measured? These verses tell us those worshiping in the temple will be measured. That means John is carrying the rod for the Jews.A day is coming when the Jewish nation will have to answer for their rejection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:9–11 “For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”For far too long the nation called by God’s name has shunned God and certainly God’s Son.Many would rather call themselves atheists rather than believe in a God who allows terrible suffering.Others are so caught up in living the law of God they cannot see the evidence of the Messiah having already come.Jesus says they will be measured. The Jews will not be the only ones measured.2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”Have you considered the fact that upon your death you too will face a judgement? The most quoted verse today is “Do not judge lest you be judged.”We are led to believe the most heinous crime we can commit is to judge someone else.To be called judgmental is the height of arrogance. Not one of us wants to be arrogant. So we keep our judgments to ourselves. If the world goes to hell well at least I’m not being arrogant. No when we see our brother sin and do nothing we allow his blood to build on our hands.Ezekiel 3:20 NASB 95 20 Again, when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I place an obstacle before him, he will die; since you have not warned him, he shall die in his sin, and his righteous deeds which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at your hand. For far too long we have been taught never to judge someone’s actions or deeds. But that is not what the bible teaches.Everywhere we look we see this book being held up as a measurement.Do what is in the book and live right lives.Do not do what is in the book and live evil lives. You and I have to understand we are responsible to correct those who do wrong. That means as a church sometimes we have to discipline those who are our members. Now we do not hold up some arbitrary measure comparing one man or woman to another. We hold everyone up to the standard of God and if they are found lacking then we do what we must do.One of my favorite things to do is to put up a piece of trim molding. That trim can make a room beautiful if it is done correctly.Or it can be an also added piece of wood. When I was learning to put up that molding I had to be taught what I did right and what I did wrong. If I had never been corrected in my wrongs I never could have become a finish carpenter.Look around you, who do you know that needs correction from the word of God so that he/she will not be found lacking when measured by Jesus himself. The time of this measurement is coming quickly.Revelation 22:12 NASB 95 12 “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.We are not guaranteed 2 years to tell our friends and family where they are wrong. In fact it might already be too late. But if it is not too late decide today to confront those who are wrong.Teach them God’s way before it is too late.Scripture tells us judgment is coming.Revelation 20:12–13 NASB 95 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Our friends and family are dying left and right. Some of them have the comfort of Christ and go to be with him at that time.Others do not have that comfort and are bound for this judgment where the condemned are cast into the lake of fire. Some in church today will find themselves in that lake of fire for all eternity because they would not admit their sin and need for forgiveness.John 3:18 NASB 95 18 He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.Many of them are saying, “I am a believer!”Yet they trust in themselves to overcome evil with good.Do you believe strongly enough to confront someone you love with their wrong doing? The rod has already been cast. The measurement defined. It has been written down and given among men that men might be saved. Conclusion:There are men and women in church today who have not been saved.Members of the church.Basically good people. But Good people go to hell if they rejected the only one who could make them good enough to go to heaven. That is the very reason God measured the temple because a good people rejected God’s way to heaven.Today, do not leave this place without knowing you are a Christian. How do I know you are not a Christian?Because of my actions.Christians do not stir up trouble so they will get their way.Christians do not talk behind the back of others.Christians confront those who are wrong with the word of God.Today step forward and become the man/woman God intends you to be.#312 Softly and Tenderly1. Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, Calling for you and for me; See, on the portals He's waiting and watching, Watching for you and for me. (Refrain)2. Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading, Pleading for you and for me? Why should we linger and heed not His mercies, Mercies for you and for me? (Refrain)3. Time is now fleeting, the moments are passing, Passing from you and from me; Shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming, Coming for you and for me. (Refrain)4. Oh! for the wonderful love He has promised, Promised for you and for me; Tho' we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon, Pardon for you and for me. (Refrain)Refrain: Come home, come home; Ye who are weary come home; Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, Calling, O sinner, come home! Ezekiel 3:20NASB95PARA
