  • Choosing God’s Chosen

    Acts 6:3
    Today is a special day.
This day we Ordain one of God’s Chosen.
I know He is God’s chosen because God’s church elected him.
It is no light task for God’s church to choose men for the work of ministry
Today we are doing that very thing.
Several months ago this body of believers selected a man who for the first time consented to be a minister of the Lord.
This same thing happened 2000 years ago to the church in Jerusalem.
Let’s look into the circumstances surrounding the church in Jerusalem some 2000 years ago.
    There was a problem
    Widows were being overlooked.
Greek widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.
Everyone recognized there truly was a problem.
So they worked together to find a solution.
So they prioritized what each needed to do in the church.
The apostles needed to pray and study so they could teach.
But the widows also needed care
    The solution was...
    Acts 6:3 NASB95
3 “Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.
So the solution was to get other men to take care of the widows.
    Not just any men.
    Certain qualified men.
    Qualifications
    a. Of good reputation
    1) The good reputation is because these leaders should have already proven themselves fit to lead.
    2) Everyone in the church knew these men and what kind of men they were.
    3) The Apostles led the church to choose from themselves men of good reputation.
    a) When the Lord gets His grasp upon us He changes us.
    b) What we were is no longer what we are.
    c) Maybe you have taken the time to look back at the person you have been
    i. Perhaps one taken to tell a lie
ii. Maybe one who enjoyed talking about others.
    d) But now due to the influence of Jesus, the HS and God’s glory you no longer delve into the things that once brought you such great joy.
    4) That is when you begin to be one of good repute.
    5) The 2nd qualification is...
    b. Full of the Spirit Acts 6:3 “Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.”
    1) I want to look at the implication of this statement.
    a) Full implies it is possible to be less than full.
    b) The Apostles told the congregation to choose from yourselves men full of the Spirit.
    c) Understand this.
    i. Everyone who is a Christian has been given the HS.
ii. But over time we learn more and allow the HS to fill us with Himself.
iii. As we exercise faith the Spirit fills us even more.
iv. Over time as we sell out more and more to the HS our lives become so very different from the world.
    d) Stephen was full of the Spirit Acts 7:55 “But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;”
    2) The Apostles knew that those who lead need more than just the indwelling Spirit that comes with salvation.
    3) The Servant Leader must be full of the Spirit.
    4) Only then Leaders lead.
    5) For it is God who leads His church and how can He lead if those chosen to lead in the church are not full of the HS.
    6) Think of a time in your life when you did what you believed the Spirit was telling you to do.
    a) I know, it was scary
    b) But it was amazing when you accomplished the work the HS enabled you to accomplish.
    c) No one else can do that.
    7) Just as the church needed leaders full of the HS then so does the church need leaders full of the HS now.
    c. Full of wisdom Acts 6:3 “Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.”
    1) James 3:17 “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.”
    a) The wisdom of God is far superior to anything this world has to offer.
    b) It seems obvious to me that too many of our children are growing up now without the Wisdom from above.
    c) So much of what we teach our children is worldly wisdom.
    d) Yes we need to know about the world
    e) But more importantly we need to know the one who created the world.
    2) The Apostles thought it important that the servant leader be wise with the Creator’s Wisdom.
    3) That kind of wisdom comes only through time with the Father.
    4) Again the Servant Leader must spend time gaining the wisdom only God can give.
    2. These men would oversee the daily serving of food.
David is that man chosen by you
A man of good reputation, full of the Spirit and wisdom from above.
Today it is our privilege to ordain this man, David Johnson
    Acts 6:6 NASB95
6 And these they brought before the apostles; and after praying, they laid their hands on them.
This morning I am asking all of our deacons to gather round David for a time of prayer while placing our hands upon Him.
