  • From Compromise to Commitment

    1 Samuel 17
Reiterate the 3 chairs of faith
Last week we looked at Romans 12:1-2 to show us how to move from the 2nd or 3rd chairs to the 1st chair of faith.
Today we will use David and his battle with Goliath as an illustration of 1st chair faith.
We will see the army in the 2nd chair of compromised faith.
David will be squarely in the 1st chair faith.
    Compromise
A settlement of differences in which each side makes concessions.
Something combining qualities of two different things. The fuel in my tank was compromised with water
A concession to something that is harmful or depreciative. PT 109 men wanting to give up rather than endure the struggle to return to battle.
    Commitment-
The state of being bound emotionally or intellectually to an ideal or course of action.
ie. Marriage-Momma and Daddy for 57 years
1 Samuel 17 is the story of David vs Goliath.
It will illustrate what is needed to move from compromise to commitment.
What does it take to become the committed believer of the First Chair?
    Prayer

Change the focus of your commitment

The focus of David's commitment is the "Living God"
The focus of the army was on something, anything else 1 Samuel 17:24-25
    1 Samuel 17:24–25 NASB 95
24 When all the men of Israel saw the man, they fled from him and were greatly afraid. 25 The men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who is coming up? Surely he is coming up to defy Israel. And it will be that the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.
These guys had compromised with the world.
all they could see were the externals
They could not fathom a god that could overcome such physical stature.
They had their eyes on what they could do alone.
The focused on the reward for defeating this warrior.
That changed their focus from the living God.
If we fail the entire nation will succumb to the Philistines.
What of Saul, we could never let him down.
David's commitment to the Living God never flickered. 1 Sam 17:45
    1 Samuel 17:45 NASB 95
45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.
Even though the Philistine tried to change David's focus he could not.
David remained steadfast in his commitment to the Lord.
David did not rely on the worldly instruments of death.
The focus of our commitment must be our Living Lord!
    Matthew 16:24–25 NASB 95
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
The second chair compromises and never gives his life for the living Lord.
The second chair focuses on what they can see and do.
    attend church faithfully.
spend time in prayer and daily devotions.
commit to follow the leadership of the church.
These things are good and ought to be done.
But the focus of the believer must always be the Lord Jesus Christ. Matthew 16:24Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.”
    Compromisers must commit to Jesus.
    That means denying self.
It means following Jesus regardless of the cost.
It means giving up your life so Jesus can live through you.
It's like when a child comes into the life of a married couple.
Pre-child the couple did as they pleased.
Post-child the couple does as the child pleases.
You gave up your life to allow another to have it.
That is what happens when you focus on Christ alone.
Not only must you change your focus but...

Change your belief about the person and power of the Lord

David believed in God and his power
The Army believed in their own power
    1 Samuel 17:11 NASB 95
11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
When Goliath taunted Israel they were afraid.
They could not see beyond the physical.
Compromisers never get beyond the physical. (what they themselves can do.)
Look at David's God and his power 1 Sam 17:37
    1 Samuel 17:37 NASB 95
37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and may the Lord be with you.”
Tell of David's age and size
David believed in the God who had already revealed himself to David.
The committed believer is committed to God and his power
The compromiser doesn’t pray about extra income of even how to spend ordinary income...
They cannot fathom a living God interceding on their behalf.
They cannot get beyond the physical.
The committed believer of the 1st chair depends upon his God and His power
He believes God is powerful enough to direct them in spending additional income and regular income.
The committed believer sees well beyond the physical.
She believes in God's power to do all things whatsoever he has commanded us.
When David faced Goliath it was not in his strength that he stood that day.
    David went in God's power.
How often do you go in God's power?
Not only must you change your focus and you belief about the power of God...

Change your belief about the purpose of the Lord.

David was committed to the purpose of the Lord
The army was committed to Saul v.25 "The king will enrich the man who kills him...."
Saul had a need to look good in front of Israel.
The men knew he had that need and realized he would pay handsomely for the head of Goliath.
In compromising with the world they began to follow a man.
Saul's purpose was to remain in power.
David was committed to God's purpose 1 Sam 17:33-36
    1 Samuel 17:33–36 NASB 95
33 Then Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth while he has been a warrior from his youth.” 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant was tending his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock, 35 I went out after him and attacked him, and rescued it from his mouth; and when he rose up against me, I seized him by his beard and struck him and killed him. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has taunted the armies of the living God.”
David knew God's purpose was for David to glorify Him.
He knew Israel was God's chosen people.
David could not believe his living God would allow an insolent Philistine to defeat his chosen nation.
Look at God's commitment to us Ro 8:32-35
    Romans 8:32–35 NASB 95
32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
    Skip down to
    Romans 8:38–39 NASB 95
38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We must trust God enough to not be concerned with "why?"
Compromisers get caught up with "why"
    God why did you allow...
    God you should have...
    Why didn't you...
The committed believer simply knows God's purpose is best
He is committed to that purpose.
She will not wonder if God knows what he is doing.
Not only must you change your focus and your belief about the power of God, and the purpose of God but...

Change your beliefs about the program of the Lord (the How?)

David knew how God would accomplish His will
The army could only see man's way vv.11, 16.
    Man's way was impossible.
Here was a man over 9 feet tall.
He was a warrior all his life
To the compromiser their was no other way than man's way.
David was committed to God's way
    1 Samuel 17:47 NASB 95
47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands.”
When David stood before Goliath he was only a youth.
None of the high tech weaponry fit him.
He only knew that God would deliver this evil one into the hands of Israel.
We must trust God enough to leave the details to Him.
Compromisers get caught up with "How?"
    How God will you..
    How can you not....
    Is it possible....?
    Committed believers simply trust God.
If he says he wants a mountain moved he will move it.
If he says to awaken the church he will awaken it.
Not only must you change your focus and your belief about the power of God, the purpose of God, the program of God

Change your beliefs about the provisions of the Lord

David's beliefs about the Lord's provision
    The army's beliefs about the Lord's provision v. 38. 1 Sam 17 38
    1 Samuel 17:38 NASB 95
38 Then Saul clothed David with his garments and put a bronze helmet on his head, and he clothed him with armor.
Again they were concerned with the physical.
They attacked the problem from their point of view.
David staked his life on his Lord providing 1 Sam 17:39-40
    1 Samuel 17:39–40 NASB 95
39 David girded his sword over his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. So David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.” And David took them off. 40 He took his stick in his hand and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, even in his pouch, and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.
David believed the Lord would provide the means to kill Goliath.
    And so he did.
Being committed to the Lord's provision is true freedom
The compromiser can never see beyond the physical.
But I can't afford to help this guy
I simply don't have time to give to the church.
The truly committed see beyond the bills & the bank acct.
The committed give and trust God to do as he promised.
    That is true freedom.

    Conclusion:

Will you today move from compromising to commitment?
Begin trusting in the One who changes lives.
    Focus on God alone
Commit to the person and power of God.
Trust the purpose and program of God.
Believe the Lord will provide for his servants.
Today is the day to move into the 1st chair of faith.
That can only be done by allowing him to renew you mind.
Will you commit to allowing God to transform you into a first chair Christian?

277 Take My Life, and Let It Be Consecrated

    1.          Take my life, and let it be               Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;               Take my hands and let them move               At the impulse of Thy love,               At the impulse of Thy love.
    2.          Take my feet, and let them be               Swift and beautiful for Thee;               Take my voice and let me sing               Always, only, for my King,               Always, only, for my King.
    3.          Take my silver and my gold,               Not a might would I withhold;               Take my moments and my days;               Let them flow in ceaseless praise,               Let them flow in ceaseless praise.
    4.          Take my will, and make it Thine,               It shall be no longer mine;               Take my heart, it is Thine own,               It shall be Thy royal throne,               It shall be Thy royal throne.
