1 Now the Spirit of God came on Azariah the son of Oded, 2 and he went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: the Lord is with you when you are with Him. And if you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you. 3 For many days Israel was without the true God and without a teaching priest and without law. 4 But in their distress they turned to the Lord God of Israel, and they sought Him, and He let them find Him.

    Forgiveness brings Praise

    Psalm 51:14-19
So David, at the end of this Psalm is beginning to recognize God’s forgiveness.
We’ve spoken often of David’s sin and the hurt that it caused both He and God.
We’ve seen David cry out for forgiveness and compassion.
We’ve seen David’s earnest desire to be restored to have a clean heart.
We’ve seen David beg God to not cast him away or remove His Spirit.
Today we see the result of David being forgiven.
Have you ever been forgiven some great injustice?
    4th grade chasing the girls.
I was not punished for what the others were punished for.
The relief I felt could not be conveyed.
When David realized he was forgiven, listen to what he said...
    Psalm 51:14–17 NASB 95
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise. 16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
    Pray

    David Forgiven

I will joyfully sing of Your righteousness v.14
    Psalm 51:14 NASB 95
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
This verse begins with the phrase, “Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God”
David is aware of the severity of his sin.
    His adultery and the murder.
He knew God had delivered him from his guilt.
    Psalm 51:14 NASB 95
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
Now he has reason to sing joyfully.
    God’s righteousness replaced David’s unrighteousness.
God’s ability to be right replaced David’s inability to be right.
Because of that David wrote this Psalm.
A Psalm of praise to be sung joyfully in the temple.
My mouth will declare Your praise v.15.
    Psalm 51:15 NASB 95
15 O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise.
He asked the Lord to open his lips.
Any ability we have comes from the Lord.
So if we are to praise Him He must open our lips.
He must give us that ability to praise Him.
    Psalm 51:15 NASB 95
15 O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise.
David declared his mouth would praise the Lord.
David was thrilled that God saw fit to forgive his sin.
The result of God’s forgiveness was David’s praise.
This Psalm was the result of God forgiving David his most reprehensible sin.
David learned a few things through God’s forgiveness.

    David teaches

God does not delight in religion v.16
    Psalm 51:16 NASB 95
16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering.
Sacrifices and burnt offerings often are nothing more than religion.
I know, God commanded these sacrifices and offerings.
But David realized God intended these offerings and sacrifices to be from the heart.
They should be more than a thing done because sin was acknowledged.
Sacrifices and offerings that are true are the result of something occuring in the heart...
God’s delight is a broken and contrite heart v.17
    Psalm 51:17 NASB 95
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
David says, True Worship of God requires a broken spirit
A broken spirit lays aside all pride,
    All personality,
    All our own resources
    Makes no claims
    Offers no arguments
Removes all independence, self-will and self-righteousness
A broken spirit turns to God and trusts His mercy rather than his own personal worth or merit
    God desires a broken spirit
    Someone totally dependent on Him
Realizing there is nowhere else to go.
    Psalm 51:17 NASB 95
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
    Everyone understands a broken heart
It’s a heart that believed one thing was happening but something else really occured.
David thought he had hidden his sin and had gotten away with it.
But Nathan’s story brought the sin to its reality of something very different and horrible.
    David’s heart was broken.
A contrite heart is the result of understanding the severity of what you have done to another, in this case, to God, Himself.
David’s heart was contrite because he had taken time to show what he knew about what he had done to God.
He needed God’s grace and compassion.
He needed God to cleanse him of his iniquity.
He knew he had sinned against God
    He needed God’s purification.
He needed God to clean his heart and to renew a steadfast or firm spirit within him.
He knew God could and should remove His presence and Spirit but begged Him not to.
David asked for a willing spirit and the joy of God’s salvation.
Thus David came to God with a broken and contrite heart because God had forgiven him.

    Have you been forgiven?

Not one of us in this room is worthy of God, unless He forgive us.
We can point at the sin of someone else and compare ourselves to them but that is the wrong way to assess our sinfulness.
    Isaiah 53:6 NASB 95
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
Without a doubt the Bible teaches that no one is righteous, we have all sinned.
So comparing ourselves to one another is fruitless.
That’s like comparing 4 pieces of burnt toast.
All of them are burnt but usually we will pick the least burnt piece to eat first.
God goes by the all burnt qualifier.
The least burnt is what we use as a qualifier but it doesn’t work
    Isaiah 53:6 NASB 95
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
The Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.
David realized that God had taken his iniquity, his sin, his mistake, his horrible, evil act upon Himself.
Each of us has to come to that understanding before we can...

    Sing praises

When we realize the truth of our standing before God, a terrifying reality come upon us.
I am lost and there is nothing I can do about it.
I am ruined unless God in heaven saves me.
With that realization we sing praises and adoration for the rest of our lives.
How else can we repay the debt we owe?
Certainly we could never repay that debt but all we can do is rejoice over what has become our salvation.
The God of heaven has done what we could not do.
Like the slave in Mat 18:21-35 who owed 10,000 talents.
When the king wanted to settle his accounts the man could not repay.
So the king ordered that he, his family and all his possessions be sold and they be imprisoned until they could pay.
The slave begged for more time and the king forgave the debt.
The slave should have been overjoyed by this forgiveness.
    So should we.
But often our pride hinders our praise.
I had to learn to overcome my pride and it has happened since I came to this church.
Before I became your pastor, I stood in that pew singing quietly so as not to be heard by anyone.
I did not believe anyone wanted to hear my praises.
So I sang in such a manner as to avoid others hearing me.
But the Lord began to work on my pride and I realized praising God was far more important than my pride or my voice.
So when you hear me singing praises today you understand what has happened.
The Lord overcame my pride and I gave into His desire for me to sing praises.
    David did the same thing.
He allowed God to open his lips and David extolled his praises to God.
If you have been forgiven, you too have ample reason to overcome your pride and praise God from the highest hilltop.
When we realize what God has done for us, not only will we praise Him but we will also...

    Forsake religion

So often we displace Christianity for Religion.
    Here is what I mean.
Religious activity takes the place of relationship building.
Often we will think that as long as I do certain things I’ll be fine.
For instance with the Israelites they understood that God had given them the law and as long as they did the law all would be fine.
So they set about finding ways to abide by the law.
Soon others came in and decided that we could almost do the law and we would still be fine.
An example Jesus gave is found in Matt 15 3—6
    Matthew 15:3–6 NASB 95
3 And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother is to be put to death.’ 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God, 6 he is not to honor his father or his mother.’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
See how they took the money they would have used to care for their parents and preserved it by pledging it to God
How is our society doing something similar?
We see to it that we attend church as often as we think is necessary.
But then we take the rest of the time to fulfill our own interests.
    Work
    Hobbies
    Entertainment
Things we do not consult God about but reason out that we deserve these things or it is the responsible thing to do.
I am not saying any of these things are bad.
But if they become a thing of reason rather than obedience to God we have become like the Jews in Jesus’ day.
We give to the poor to be seen
We fast or pray so others will see.
We illustrate our command of the Bible so others will respect our walk with God.
When in fact all we are doing is religious activity because we have not consulted God.
We reason and assume like so many did offering sacrifices and burnt offerings.
But God desires a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart

    Conclusion

    So the conclusion is this
    Have you been forgiven?
What is your response to that forgiveness?
Are you overjoyed and praising God?
Do you worship with a broken and contrite heart?
God wants us to be so humble before Him that we will go wherever He leads and do whatever He says.
Today is your opportunity to come to this altar and confess your wrong to God.
Repenting of religious activity or an unwillingness to praise Him due to pride.
If the Lord is asking you to make a step for any reason, to not do so is disobedience.
