  • Have You Considered My servant ...?

    Job 1
    Much of life is focused on competition.
    In just a few days College football will begin and many will be looking for the winner to be their team.
    We might make a statement similar to the one God made about His servant, “Have you considered My servant?”
    The story we are looking at today is a very familiar story for most of us.
    All of us have heard of the man named Job.
    We mostly also know Job endured great difficulty.
    The fact is: All of us endure difficulty
    I have concluded from biblical evidence that we endure difficulty for 1 of 2 reasons.
    Sin-therefore the difficulty is a consequence of that sin and it is meant to correct our behavior
    Growth-God allows difficulty in our lives so that we learn to depend upon Him more.
    Therefore when trouble arises we are prudent when
    We check to see if we have sinned.
    If we haven’t sinned then realize this difficulty is to teach me more of who God really is.
    Pray
    Have you considered My servant ...

    Job is God’s servant vv.6-8

    Job 1:6–8 NASB 95
    6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” 8 The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.”
    The sons of God are spiritual beings who gather around God on a regular basis.
    This time Satan is also present.
    God strikes up a conversation with Satan focusing on one individual named Job, God’s servant.
    I wonder, does God ever pick my name or yours to go behind that question, “Have you considered my servant...:”
    God goes on to explain Job’s uprightness and blamelessness.
    Job does not turn to evil but always turns from evil.
    How do we know this? By looking back at the earlier verses.

    He is favored vv.1-3.

    Job 1:1–3 NASB 95
    1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God and turning away from evil. 2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him. 3 His possessions also were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
    Job is a blessed man
    7 sons
    3 daughters
    Job is a rich man
    7,000 sheep
    3,00 camels
    500 yoke of oxen
    500 female donkeys
    Very many servants.
    God certainly seemed to favor Job.

    He is righteous vv.4-5

    Job 1:4–5 NASB 95
    4 His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.
    A righteous man is concerned about his fellow man.
    He is unwilling to allow them to continue in sin.
    Job would offer sacrifices for his children.
    He did not expect them to sin but if they did they would be covered by his sacrifice.
    How often have we grown concerned about those around us?
    Are we willing to sacrifice for our family, friends, or neighbors?
    Job was and did.
    Job is a blameless and righteous man so Satan has an excuse for that.

    Satan’s excuse vv.9-11

    9 Then Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.”
    Job is calling God a liar
    Remember what God said?
    Job 1:8 “The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.””
    Satan is telling God that Job has grown more fond of his wealth than he is of God.
    He knows that because when God takes all that wealth away Job will certainly curse God.
    Satan has challenged God.

    God’s answer v12.

    12 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord.
    God says, “Try it and see.”

    The Result vv.13-19

    Oxen and donkeys stolen vv.13-15

    Job 1:13–15 NASB 95
    13 Now on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and the Sabeans attacked and took them. They also slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
    Remember this happened on the day his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house.
    Suddenly the oxen and donkeys are all stolen.

    Result

    Sheep and servants burned by fire from heaven v.16.
    Job 1:16 NASB 95
    16 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
    The oxen, the donkeys, the servants, and now the sheep and their servants.

    Result

    Chaldeans stole Camels and servants v.17.

    17 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels and took them and slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
    The oxen, the donkeys, the servants, the sheep and their servants, now the camels and the servants for the camels
    But it’s about to get worse

    Result

    Sons and daughters die vv.18-19
    Job 1:18–19 NASB 95
    18 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19 and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
    Every sign of wealth is gone.
    Even his 10 children have been taken from Job.

    Job’s Response vv. 20-22

    Mourned v.20

    20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped.
    Job mourned.
    He had every right to mourn for so much had been taken from him so quickly.
    I am sure his head was spinning as he took it all in.

    Job’s Response

    Worshipped God v.20-21
    Job 1:20–21 NASB 95
    20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
    He fell to the ground and worshipped.
    Look at v.21 Job 1:21 “He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.””

    Job’s Response

    Satan was wrong v.22.

    22 Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.
    Job did not curse God, he worshipped God.
    The things were not his God.
    God is his God.

    What does all this mean to me?

    Would God ever ask Satan to Consider My servant, Clay or...?
    In other words could you and I be considered blameless?
    Have you considered that the reason some of the things that happen in your life could it be God has challenged Satan with our faithfulness?
    What is your response when bad things happen to good people? Especially if you are are the good person?
    Do we trust God even during the tough times?
    Job did, Job 1:21
    Job 1:21 NASB 95
    21 He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
    We must absolutely trust the Lord with every aspect of life.
    We trust Him in the good and the bad.

    Conclusion

    I want you to listen to a story about one of your fellow church members.
