  • Glorifying God in Pain

    Bible Passage: Job 2:1-10

    Pain- We all face it at some time in life.
    Could be emotional
    Could be physical
    Could be both at the same time.
    But all of us want to escape it as soon as possible.
    Summary: In Job 2, Job faces immense pain
    Because of the loss of his health and the scorn of his friends,
    Yet he remains steadfast in his faith,
    In so doing he displays a profound example of how to glorify God amidst trials.
    Application: Pain can be a channel through which we can honor and glorify God.
    Job 2 emphasizes resilience and faithfulness in difficult times,
    We are therefore reminded that our response to pain can serve as a testimony to others.
    Teaching: Have you ever considered that suffering is not devoid of purpose.
    God can be glorified even in the depths of despair,
    And we as believers we are called to trust Him despite our circumstances.
    We are encouraged to seek God's presence and maintain our integrity during trials.
    Pray
    What can we learn from Jobs terrible pain?

    1. God Notices Our Integrity

    Job 2:1–3 NASB 95
    1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. 2 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” 3 The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still holds fast his integrity, although you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.”
    Vv. 1-2 are exactly what we read last week but look at...
    Verse 3 is the verse that should strike us all in this passage.
    Have you considered my servant Job?
    Once again the blameless upright man, fearing God and turning from evil.
    He still holds fast his integrity even though he was ruined without cause.
    How many times have we heard or even said, “I don’t deserve this?” or “I don’t understand why this is happening to me”.
    Job shows us that calamity can come without cause.
    Or the cause is that it serves a purpose we do not know about.
    Pain is often an enemy that comes to us to teach us to trust the heavenly Father.
    We may not deserve it, we might not understand it but we trust God through it.
    As we turn out attention to the Lord’s supper in a few moments, remember, Jesus did not deserve what happened to Him either.
    What can we learn from Jobs terrible pain?

    2. Testing Refines True Faith

    Job 2:4–6 NASB 95
    4 Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. 5 However, put forth Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face.” 6 So the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your power, only spare his life.”
    God is ever ready for a teaching moment.
    Satan is standing before God lecturing Him on the faithfulness of God’s servant Job.
    Job is about to be tested again without cause except to teach Satan a lesson.
    But let’s consider what Satan says about pain
    Job 2:4–5 NASB 95
    4 Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. 5 However, put forth Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face.”
    “All that a man has he will give for his life.”
    Is that true? No, No, surely not
    Then I think of the reasons I give for not doing what I know God has told me to do.
    What heights are we willing to climb to avoid pain?
    What depths will we brave to avoid pain?
    When we face pain, what are we willing to do to overcome that pain?
    Why is there a narcotics crisis in our land today?
    Why is there a liquor store in every town?
    Because we fail the test and will do whatever it takes to avoid pain.
    But the test was designed to highlight our faithfulness.
    The test was to bring glory to God.
    The test was designed to reveal to us our faithfulness even in pain.
    Shortcuts-narcotics, alcohol, overeating do not relieve pain, they simply mask it and take away from God’s glory.
    What can we learn from Jobs terrible pain?

    3. Suffering Draws Us Closer

    Job 2:7–8 NASB 95
    7 Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8 And he took a potsherd to scrape himself while he was sitting among the ashes.
    You’ve seen the sign outside, Suffering is never for nothing.
    Yet here we are Job lost everything without cause
    Here he is again facing terrible physical pain.
    Is all this without cause?
    These 2 verses tell us Job is in immense pain and turmoil
    All he can do is scrape himself while sitting in ashes.
    You know the pain-what are we willing to do to escape pain?
    Sit in a tub of water just a hot as you can possibly stand it?
    Even end our lives so we don’t have to face the pain?
    I wonder how Jesus felt when He knew what He was facing?
    That’s right we have scripture to tell us how he felt
    Matthew 26:39 NASB 95
    39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.”
    Jesus knew what was ahead but He faced the pain, the humiliation to accomplish the will of the Father

    4. Submission Amidst Suffering

    Job 2:9–10 NASB 95
    9 Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die!” 10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
    Verse 9 is one of the most quoted verses of the Bible.
    Sometimes the wife is spoken of in disdain.
    But the truth is she embodies what all of us are thinking.
    Lord, Just kill me and get it over with, we might say.
    Or perhaps we take a drink rather than face the pain.
    Or we try to run from the pain by doing whatever it takes to overcome the pain.
    Maybe she was tired of seeing her husband in pain.
    Remember she had lost 10 children as well,
    She now had no income
    She now was viewed as the wife of a man who had offended God.
    Maybe she had good reason to make this statement
    But look at Job’s response
    Job 2:10 NASB 95
    10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
    So he tells her she is speaking as a foolish woman.
    He knows his wife and she is not foolish.
    But we all speak foolishly sometimes.
    Then he explains why he says she is being foolish
    “Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?”
    A question we all have to answer.
    No one wants adversity in life.
    But when it comes we must remain faithful to God in that adversity.
    He is the same God who blesses as he is who brings adversity.

    Conclusion

    What can we learn from Job?
    God notices our integrity
    His Testing refines our true faith
    Suffering draws us closer.
    And He wants our Submission Amidst Suffering
    Big Idea: Even in profound suffering:
    we are called to trust God,
    to proclaim His goodness,
    And to demonstrate our faith can shine brightest in pain.
    Romans 8:28 NASB 95
    28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
    Perhaps God is speaking to you this morning through this message.
    Maybe you realize that you have not handled suffering as the Lord would have you to. That means you want to become a better Christian or you realize you have not ever been a Christian.
    Perhaps this morning you know Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a sinless perfect life, died a horrible death for my sin and rose the third day.
    This is the gospel
    If you are just now beginning to believe this then make a mark on your tear off that says I want to become a Christian.
    Or maybe you want to become a better Christian or part of this church.
    Maybe you are wondering if God is leading you to worship at this church and want more information, just mark that one on the tear off.
    Place them in the brown box as you go out.
    I want to become a Christian.
    I want to become a better Christian.
    I want to become part of this church.
    I want someone to give me more information about this church.
    For now we need to prepare for the Lord’s supper
    We do that by taking time to pray and ask the Lord to show us if we are unworthy of this meal.
    If He shows you something, now is the time to repent, to confess to the Lord and ask His forgiveness.

    23 ... the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
