- The Authority and the First Seal – Who Is the Rider on the White Horse?FROM BEHIND THE VEILLesson Title: The Authority and the First Seal – The Antichrist on the White Horse
Revelation 6:1–2 KJV 1900 1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. 2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.B. Immediate SettingThe Lamb in Revelation 5 has already taken the book from the right hand of Him that sat upon the throne.Heaven has already declared Him worthy to open the seals because He was slain and has redeemed by His blood.Revelation 6 shows the Lamb beginning to execute the authority He already possesses by opening the first seal.II. WHAT JOHN SEES AND HEARSA. The Lamb Opens the SealJohn does not see history unfolding by itself; he sees the Lamb deliberately open the seal. The initiative is in heaven at the throne, not on earth among kings and armies. The “noise of thunder” signals the weight of divine judgment and the voice of God.B. The Call: “Come and See”One of the four living creatures speaks with a voice like thunder.John is invited to perceive spiritually, not just to watch events. The seals are not random disasters; they are revelations of how the reigning Christ releases judgment and allows deception to run its course.III. SYMBOLS OF THE FIRST SEALA. The White HorseIn Revelation, white is associated with purity and victory, but here it is a mask; the Antichrist comes cloaked in the appearance of righteousness and peace.Satan is a counterfeiter; a false christ must look as close to the true Christ as possible to deceive. The white horse mirrors the true Christ on a white horse in Revelation 19, but this is an imitation, a deceptive parallel.B. The Bow in His HandThe rider holds a bow, yet Scripture does not mention arrows. This suggests conquest not first by open warfare, but by the threat of force, political maneuvering, treaties, and deceptive promises of peace. The Antichrist presents himself as a solution‑bringer, a peacemaker, while his real intent is domination.C. The Crown Given to Him“A crown was given unto him” shows that his authority is permitted and limited; it is granted for a season, not inherent or eternal. The crown is a stephanos – a victor’s wreath, not the many diadems of the true Christ. He is celebrated as a “winner” in the eyes of the world, but his victory is temporary and under the sovereign leash of God.D. Conquering and to Conquer“He went forth conquering, and to conquer” describes an ongoing campaign of increasing control. His conquest is progressive – expanding influence over nations, economies, religions, and systems. This aligns with the picture of the man of sin who exalts himself, subdues kingdoms, and brings the world under his sway.IV. WHY THE RIDER IS THE ANTICHRISTA. He Is a Counterfeit of the True ChristThe true Christ rides a white horse in Revelation 19 with many crowns and a sharp sword out of His mouth; He judges and makes war in righteousness. This rider has only one crown, a bow without arrows, and his identity is left unnamed – he looks like Christ’s image without Christ’s nature. An antichrist, by definition, imitates Christ; the white horse, crown, and conquering image fit a false Messiah.B. He Fits the Order Jesus Gave in Matthew 24Jesus first warned, “Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ, and shall deceive many.”Only after this warning did He speak of wars, famines, and pestilences – the very things pictured in the next seals (red, black, and pale horses). The first seal, then, matches the first sign Jesus gave: religious deception and false christs, not the true Christ.C. The First Four Seals Form a Judging SequenceThe red horse brings war, the black horse brings famine and economic distress, the pale horse brings widespread death. These three clearly describe divine judgments, not blessings; it is consistent that the first rider is also part of this judgment chain.Deception by a false christ is itself a judgment on a world that rejects the true Christ.D. His “Peace” Is a Setup for DestructionElsewhere we are told of a figure who will come with a promise of peace and security, only for sudden destruction to follow. The Antichrist’s early rise is marked by apparent stability, unity, and answers to global crisis. The following seals show how quickly that false peace collapses into war, scarcity, and death when the mask is removed.V. A BIBLICAL PROFILE OF THE ANTICHRISTA. The “Little Horn” in DanielHe rises out of other horns, “little” at first, then uprooting others and becoming dominant. He has a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, exalting himself and challenging the Most High.He makes war with the saints and prevails against them for a season, exercising persecuting power. He changes times and laws, attempting to rewrite moral order, worship patterns, and covenant identity.B. The King of Fierce CountenanceHe is described as a king of fierce countenance and understanding dark sentences, operating with supernatural, satanic insight. His power is mighty, but not by his own power; he is energized by a deeper spiritual source of wickedness. He destroys wonderfully – bringing astonishing destruction against the mighty and the holy people. He prospers by deceit; through policy and craft he causes deceit to prosper under his hand.He magnifies himself in his heart and stands up against the Prince of princes, directly opposing Christ.C. The Covenant Maker and BreakerHe confirms a covenant with many for one week – entering into a political or religious agreement that appears to promise peace. In the midst of the week he breaks the covenant, causes sacrifice and offering to cease, and commits abomination in the holy place. He works deceitfully after making a league; he becomes strong with a small people, rising rapidly through intrigue rather than honest strength.D. The Man of Sin in 2 Thessalonians 2He is called the man of sin and the son of perdition – sin and destruction are his defining marks. He opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped. He sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God, claiming divine honour and absolute allegiance. He cannot be revealed until the restraining force or person is taken out of the way; God controls the timing of his unveiling. The Lord will consume him with the Spirit of His mouth and destroy him with the brightness of His coming.E. Antichrist and Many AntichristsJohn teaches that antichrist shall come, and that even now there are many antichrists. An antichrist is one who denies that Jesus is the Christ and who denies the Father and the Son.The spirit of antichrist denies that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, resisting the true revelation of who He is.The many antichrists in history are forerunners; the rider on the white horse is the final, climactic embodiment of that same spirit on a global stage.VI. HOW THIS PROFILE CONNECTS TO THE WHITE HORSEA. Appearance and DeceptionThe Antichrist must look like a saviour to deceive; the white horse, the crown, and the conquering image match the world’s expectation of a deliverer. His rise matches the pattern in Daniel – small at first, then suddenly strong through covenant, deceit, and political maneuvering. He fulfills Jesus’ warning of false christs who come first, before open wars and famines.B. Authority and LimitationHe is given a crown – permitted authority – but his season is defined by God and will be cut short by Christ. He conquers for a time, subduing nations and persecuting saints, but his end is destruction without human hand, by the direct intervention of the Lord. The first seal, therefore, is the Lamb allowing the Antichrist to step onto the stage of history as part of God’s larger plan of judgment and final separation.VII. HOW THIS SHAPES THE BELIEVER’S WALKA. Walk in Deep DiscernmentWe must test everything that claims the name of Christ – movements, messages, miracles, leaders. Not every “white horse” is the Lord; not every call to unity and peace is Kingdom.Discernment comes from abiding in the Word, being filled with the Spirit, and knowing the character of the real Jesus.B. Walk Free from Fear but Not from SobrietyKnowing the rider is the Antichrist does not throw us into panic; it anchors us in the Lamb’s control. We recognize that deception will increase, but so will the clarity of those who truly know their God.Our confidence is not in political outcomes but in Christ’s unshakable throne.C. Walk in Loyal Allegiance to the True ChristThe Antichrist’s power rests on misplaced loyalty – men loving lies more than truth. Our protection is a settled, covenant loyalty to Jesus, refusing to bow to any system that compromises His Lordship. We overcome by the blood of the Lamb, the word of our testimony, and a willingness to lay down our lives rather than deny Him.D. Walk as Voices of Warning and WitnessIf the first seal reveals a coming global deception, the church must warn, teach, and prepare. We call people out of fascination with personality cults, political saviors, and religious showmanship. We point them to the crucified and risen Christ, so they will recognize the counterfeit when he comes.
