- The Unforgivable SinBlasphemy Against the Holy Ghost: The Sin That Will Not Be ForgivenText: Matthew 12:31–32
Matthew 12:31–32 KJV 1900 31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.(Additional translations: Mark 3:28–30; Luke 12:10)IntroductionThis is one of the most serious and often misunderstood statements Jesus ever made. Many believers have wrestled with fear over this passage, wondering if they have said something, thought something, or done something that placed them beyond forgiveness. To understand this, we must examine the context. In Matthew 12, Jesus had just performed a miracle—casting out a devil from a man who was blind and mute. The people were amazed and began to consider whether He was the Son of David. But the Pharisees, instead of acknowledging the power of God, said, “This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub.”They saw the undeniable work of the Spirit of God—and called it the work of Satan. That is the setting in which Jesus makes this statement. The primary Greek word translated “blasphemy” in the New Testament is:βλασφημία (blasphēmía) – Strong’s G988Definition (from Strong’s and lexical sources):To speak evil of, slander, rail, revile, defame, or injure someone’s reputation—especially God’s.βλασφημέω (blasphēméō) – Strong’s G987This is the verb form, meaning:To speak reproachfully, to vilify, to falsely attribute, or to speak against in a way that dishonors.Breakdown of the word:• “blapto” – to injure or harm• “pheme” – speech or sayingSo at its core, blasphemy means:“Injurious speech” — words that harm, distort, or deliberately misrepresent truth. In Scripture, the meaning carries weight beyond casual speech. It involves:• Deliberate misrepresentation of God’s nature or work• Attributing what is holy to something unholy• Speaking against divine truth with awarenessIn the specific context of Matthew 12:31, blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is not merely saying something wrong—it is:A willful, knowing act of attributing the work of the Spirit of God to evil. That is why the Pharisees were judged so strongly—they saw the power of God and said it came from Satan. It is not careless words. It is not ignorance. It is intentional distortion of revealed truth. For contrast, Scripture also uses this word in human contexts:• Ephesians 4:31 (KJV)“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger… and evil speaking (blasphēmía), be put away from you…”Here it refers to slander against people. But when directed toward God, it becomes far more serious—it is an attack on His character, His work, or His revealed truth.Blasphemy (βλασφημία) =Slanderous, harmful, or deliberately false speech against God, His nature, or His works—especially when done with knowledge and intent.Blasphemy Against the Holy Ghost Is a Willful Rejection of Revealed TruthMatthew 12:24, 31 • The Pharisees were not confused—they were confronted with truth. The Spirit of God was manifest, and instead of yielding, they resisted. This is not about someone struggling, doubting, or even backsliding. This is about a hardened heart that sees the truth clearly and deliberately calls it false. The Holy Ghost is the one who reveals Christ, convicts of sin, and draws man to repentance (John 16:8). To blaspheme Him is to reject that conviction so completely that the heart becomes sealed in rebellion. This is not a single slip—it is a settled condition of the heart. This Sin Is Unforgivable Because It Rejects the Only Means of ForgivenessJohn 16:8; Hebrews 10:26–27 • The Holy Ghost is the one who leads a person to repentance. If someone rejects Him completely, there is no pathway left to forgiveness.Hebrews 10:26 says:“For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins.”It is not that God is unwilling to forgive—it is that the person has rejected the very Spirit that brings them to forgiveness. You cannot be forgiven if you reject the only One who leads you to repentance. It Is Not a Sin of Ignorance or WeaknessLuke 23:34 • Jesus said on the cross, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.”This reveals something powerful—ignorance can be forgiven. Weakness can be forgiven. Even speaking against Christ in misunderstanding can be forgiven. But blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is not done in ignorance. It is done with awareness. It is seeing the light and calling it darkness. It is feeling conviction and labeling it deception. It is the continual hardening of the heart until the voice of God is no longer received.A Tender Heart Cannot Commit This SinHebrews 3:15 • “To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”If a person is concerned about committing this sin, that concern itself is evidence that the Spirit is still working. Those who have truly hardened themselves to this degree are no longer sensitive. They are no longer convicted. They no longer respond. The danger is not in struggling—the danger is in becoming numb.ApplicationThis teaching should not produce fear in the believer—it should produce reverence and awareness.Guard your response to the Spirit of God.When He convicts—respond. When He corrects—yield. When He reveals truth—receive it.The gradual hardening of the heart is the real danger. It does not happen overnight. It happens through repeated resistance.Stay tender. Stay sensitive. Stay yielded.Do not resist the voice that is trying to save you.ConclusionThere is a sobering reality in this hour: many are hearing truth but filtering it through pride, offense, and tradition. The Spirit of God is moving, revealing, correcting—and some are resisting because it challenges what they have always believed.Be careful not to label what is of God as something else simply because it disrupts comfort. The Holy Ghost is not optional—He is essential. If you feel conviction, that is mercy. If you feel correction, that is love.If you feel the pull to repent, that is grace reaching for you.Respond while your heart is still soft.“Take heed of a hard heart. It begins with resisting small convictions and ends with resisting the Spirit Himself.” – John Owen Matthew 12:31–32KJV1900
