  • The Fifth Trumpet – The Abyss Opened and the Rise of Darkness

    Primary Scripture Reading
    Revelation 9:1–12 KJV 1900
1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. 2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. 3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. 5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. 6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. 7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. 8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. 9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. 10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. 11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. 12 One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.

    Introduction

The fourth trumpet struck the heavens—light was diminished, and darkness began to advance.
    Now the fifth trumpet sounds.
This is no longer just environmental judgment.
    This is spiritual.
    The first four trumpets affected:
    Earth Sea Waters Heavens
The fifth trumpet opens something deeper.
    It opens the abyss.
Behind the veil we now see:
Not just what is happening around the earth—but what is being released onto the earth.
    This is the first “woe.”
And it marks a shift from physical judgment to spiritual torment manifesting physically.

The Fallen Star – Authority Given

    Scripture: Revelation 9:1
“…I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth…”
    “Star” – Greek: astēr (Strong’s G792)
As we saw before, this can represent:
    • a literal star • or a spiritual being
    But now notice something different:
“…to him was given the key…”
This star is not just falling—this star is given authority.
    “Key” – Greek: kleis (Strong’s G2807)
    Meaning:
    • authority to open or shut • control over access
This indicates this is not a random event.
    This is authorized release.
Luke 8:31 shows demons begging not to be sent into “the deep” (abyss).
So whatever this is—it is connected to imprisoned spiritual forces.
    Behind the veil we see:
God is allowing access to something that was previously restrained.

The Bottomless Pit – The Abyss

    Scripture: Revelation 9:1–2
    “…the bottomless pit…”
    Greek: abyssos (Strong’s G12)
    Meaning:
    • immeasurable depth • the abyss • the place of confinement for demonic beings
    This is not hell (Gehenna).
This is a holding place for imprisoned spirits.
    Romans 10:7
“…Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)”
The “deep” refers to the same concept—a place beneath, beyond human reach.
    Now notice:
    “He opened the bottomless pit…”
This was sealed. Now it is opened.
    Behind the veil we see:
Something that was restrained is now released.

Smoke and Darkness – Spiritual Obscurity

    Scripture: Revelation 9:2
“…there arose a smoke… and the sun and the air were darkened…”
    “Smoke” – Greek: kapnos (Strong’s G2586)
    Meaning:
    • smoke from burning • obscuring visibility
This is not just physical smoke.
    It results in:
    Darkened sun Darkened air
This builds on the fourth trumpet.
Light was reduced. Now it is obscured further.
    This represents:
    Confusion Deception Spiritual blindness
    2 Thessalonians 2:11
“…God shall send them strong delusion…”
    Behind the veil we see:
As judgment progresses, clarity is removed.

The Locusts – Not Natural Creatures

    Scripture: Revelation 9:3–4
“…there came out of the smoke locusts…”
    “Locusts” – Greek: akris (Strong’s G200)
But these are not normal locusts.
    Why?
They are commanded NOT to harm vegetation.
    Real locusts devour plants.
    These target people.
They are given power like scorpions.
    This indicates:
These are demonic entities described in familiar terms.
Joel 2 describes an army like locusts that behave supernaturally.
    Joel 2:4–5
“…the appearance of them is as the appearance of horses…”
Revelation 9:7 says the same thing.
    Behind the veil we see:
John is describing spiritual beings using natural language.

The Target – Only Those Without the Seal of God

    Scripture: Revelation 9:4
“…only those men which have not the seal of God…”
    This is critical.
    This judgment is selective.
    It does NOT affect:
    • those sealed by God
    It ONLY affects:
    • those outside of His protection
    Revelation 7:3
“…till we have sealed the servants of our God…”
    This confirms:
God marks His people before judgment intensifies.
    Behind the veil we see:
God knows who are His—and protects them.

    Torment Without Death

    Scripture: Revelation 9:5–6
“…they should be tormented five months…”
    “Torment” – Greek: basanizō (Strong’s G928)
    Meaning:
    • to torture • to afflict with severe pain
    This is not minor discomfort.
    This is intense suffering.
    But notice:
    “…not kill them…”
    This is unique.
    People will:
Desire death Seek death Not find it
    This reveals:
God controls both life and death.
    Job 2:6
“…he is in thine hand; but save his life.”
Even in torment, there are limits.
    Behind the veil we see:
    Judgment is controlled, not chaotic.

    The Nature of the Locusts

Revelation 9:7–10 describes them in detail:
    • like horses prepared for battle • crowns like gold • faces like men • hair like women • teeth like lions • breastplates of iron • wings sounding like chariots • tails like scorpions
This is not symbolic of helicopters or modern weapons.
The description is too specific and too biological.
This is a hybrid, supernatural, terrifying form of being.
    Behind the veil we see:
Spiritual reality is more complex than physical language can fully describe.

Their King – The Angel of the Abyss

    Scripture: Revelation 9:11
    “…they had a king over them…”
    “Apollyon” (Greek – Strong’s G623)
    Meaning:
    • destroyer
    In Hebrew: Abaddon (Strong’s H11)
    Meaning:
    • destruction
This is a ruling entity over the abyss.
    This is organized.
    This is structured.
This is not random demonic chaos—it is a coordinated release.
    Behind the veil we see:
Even darkness has hierarchy—but it is still under God’s authority.

    The First Woe Is Past

    Scripture: Revelation 9:12
    “One woe is past…”
    This confirms:
    This is only the beginning.
    Two more woes remain.
    And they will be worse.

    Application

Not all spiritual warfare is visible.
What is released here is unseen but very real.
    2. God protects His people.
    The sealed are not touched.
    3. Darkness increases when truth is rejected.
    The smoke darkens the air.
    Clarity disappears.
    4. Judgment has limits.
Even in torment, God sets boundaries.

    Closing Insight

The fifth trumpet reveals something chilling:
There are realms of darkness that have been restrained—but will not remain so forever.
    Behind the veil we see:
When God removes restraint, what was hidden becomes visible.
The earth is not just experiencing judgment.
    It is experiencing exposure.

    Next Session Preview

In the next session, we will study the sixth trumpet—the second woe.
Four angels bound at the Euphrates will be released. A massive army will emerge. And one-third of mankind will be killed.
    But remember this:
Even in the darkest hour, God remains sovereign—and His purposes will stand.
