Romans 1:16–17 KJV 1900 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.Additional References:Romans 3:21-28:Romans 4:3-8:Romans 5:17-19:2 Corinthians 5:21:Philippians 3:8-9:Isaiah 64:6:IntroductionOne of the greatest revelations a believer can receive is the revelation of righteousness. Many believers spend years trying to earn what God has already given. They struggle with condemnation. They struggle with feelings of inadequacy. They struggle with the fear that they have not done enough, prayed enough, fasted enough, or lived holy enough to be accepted by God.Yet Paul tells us that the Gospel reveals something extraordinary. It reveals the righteousness of God.The Gospel is not merely the message that God forgives sinners. It is the revelation that God makes sinners righteous through Jesus Christ.Religion says, "Work harder."The Gospel says, "Look to Christ."Religion says, "Become righteous."The Gospel says, "Receive righteousness."Many people know Jesus as Savior, but far fewer have received the revelation of righteousness.Until this revelation comes, believers often live beneath their spiritual inheritance. When this revelation comes, chains of condemnation begin to fall, confidence before God increases, and a life of holiness begins to flow from gratitude rather than obligation. The revelation of righteousness changes everything. The Gospel Reveals God's RighteousnessScripture: Romans 1:16–17“16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”Paul says that in the Gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed. The Greek word for righteousness carries the idea of being declared right, justified, and accepted before God.This righteousness is not man's righteousness. It is God's righteousness. This is what makes the Gospel so powerful. The Gospel does not simply improve a sinner. The Gospel creates a new standing before God.Many people view salvation as merely receiving forgiveness.Forgiveness removes guilt.Righteousness restores relationship.God did not simply remove our sin.He clothed us in His righteousness.Isaiah prophesied this reality:"He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness." (Isaiah 61:10)The revelation is not merely that God forgives us.The revelation is that God receives us.We Cannot Establish Our Own RighteousnessScripture: Isaiah 64:6“6 But we are all as an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; And we all do fade as a leaf; And our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”Romans 3:10“10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”The natural man always attempts to establish his own righteousness.Since the Garden of Eden, humanity has attempted to cover itself.Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves together. The first false religion was born in the garden.Man trying to cover what only God can cover.Paul addressed this in Romans 10:3:"For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God."There are still many people trying to establish their own righteousness. Some trust in church attendance. Some trust in religious traditions. Some trust in moral behavior. Some trust in good works.Yet Isaiah declared:"All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags."The revelation of righteousness begins when we stop trusting ourselves and start trusting Christ.Abraham Reveals the Pattern of FaithScripture: Romans 4:3"For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness."Notice that Abraham was declared righteous before the Law was ever given. Before circumcision. Before Sinai. Before Moses. Before commandments written on stone.God declared Abraham righteous because he believed.Faith became the channel through which righteousness was received. This is why Paul says the righteousness of God is revealed "from faith to faith."The Kingdom has always operated by faith.Abraham believed.David believed. The prophets believed. The apostles believed. And today we are still justified by faith.Faith is the hand that receives what grace has provided. The Great Exchange at CalvaryScripture: 2 Corinthians 5:21"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."This verse may be the greatest explanation of righteousness in the entire Bible. At Calvary a divine exchange occurred.Jesus took our sin.We received His righteousness. He took our judgment. We received His acceptance. He took our curse. We received His blessing. He took our death. We received His life. The Cross was not simply a place where sins were forgiven. It was the place where righteousness was transferred.Every believer who puts faith in Christ stands before God clothed in the righteousness of Jesus Himself. That is why Satan fights this revelation so fiercely. If he can keep believers focused on their failures, they will never walk in confidence before God.Righteousness Produces ConfidenceScripture: Romans 5:17“17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)”Those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life.Notice righteousness is called a gift.A gift cannot be earned.A gift can only be received. When believers understand righteousness, prayer changes.Worship changes.Faith changes.Boldness increases.Condemnation loses its power. The enemy constantly reminds believers of what they were.God reminds believers of who they are.The enemy points to failure.God points to the blood. The enemy points to weakness.God points to righteousness. The revelation of righteousness causes believers to stand boldly before the throne of grace.Righteousness Leads to Holy LivingScripture: Romans 6:13“13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.”Some fear that teaching righteousness by faith encourages sin.Paul addressed that argument."Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid."True revelation never produces lawlessness.True revelation produces transformation. When a believer understands what Christ has done, love begins to replace obligation.Holiness is no longer something forced from the outside. It begins to flow from the inside. We do not live holy to become righteous. We live holy because we are righteous.Righteousness is the root.Holy living is the fruit.ApplicationMany believers today are living beneath their inheritance. They love God.They serve God.Yet they still carry guilt that Christ already carried. They still carry shame that Christ already bore. They still carry condemnation that Christ already removed. The revelation of righteousness calls us higher.Stop measuring yourself by your failures.Stop measuring yourself by yesterday.Stop measuring yourself by your mistakes.Look to Christ.Look to the Cross.Look to the empty tomb. You are not accepted because of your performance. You are accepted because of His righteousness.Closing InsightOne of the final deceptions of the last days will be the exaltation of human righteousness. The spirit of antichrist always seeks to replace dependence on Christ with dependence upon self. The world says salvation comes through human effort. The Gospel says salvation comes through Jesus Christ alone. As darkness increases, believers must be firmly established in the revelation of righteousness.Only those who understand who they are in Christ will stand confidently in the days ahead. The Church must once again proclaim not merely forgiveness of sins but the gift of righteousness through Jesus Christ."Faith alone saves, but the faith that saves is never alone."— Martin Luther Romans 1:16–17KJV1900
