- THE REAL REASON BEHIND IT ALL!
Galatians 1:10 ESV 10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.INTRODUCTIONEvery person has an agenda. When we hear the word “agenda,” we often think of something negative. But an agenda is simply a driving purpose, a hidden motivation, or an underlying reason behind what we do.The real question is not whether we have an agenda. The real question is:What is driving us?Why do we serve? Why do we give? Why do we minister? Why do we post on social media? Why do we work so hard? Why do we chase certain relationships? Why do we strive for recognition? Many believers love Jesus, yet much of their activity is still being fueled by wounds, fears, insecurities, and unmet needs instead of being fueled by the finished work of Christ. The Gospel is not merely about changing what we do.The Gospel is about changing why we do it.Jesus did not simply come to modify behavior. He came to transform the heart.God is not just looking at your actions.God is examining your motivation.Proverbs 16:2 (ESV)“All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirit.”God weighs motives. He weighs intentions. He weighs agendas.THE AGENDA OF ACCEPTANCEEphesians 1:6 (ESV)“To the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.”Many people spend their entire lives trying to earn what Christ has already given them. One of the strongest motivations in humanity is the desire to be accepted.People want acceptance from:ParentsSpousesFriendsChurchesSocial circlesMinistry leadersThe danger comes when acceptance becomes the reason we do everything. Some people serve because they are trying to be noticed. Some preach because they need validation. Some sing because they need applause. Some work themselves to exhaustion because they are trying to prove they have value.Yet the Gospel declares that believers are already accepted in Christ. You are not working for acceptance. You are working from acceptance. The cross settled your value. The empty tomb settled your identity. The Father already declared His verdict over every believer:“You belong to Me.”When acceptance becomes your agenda, people become your master. When Christ becomes your agenda, God alone becomes your audience.THE AGENDA OF CONTROLJames 4:13-15 (ESV)“Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’”Many people are driven by the need to control outcomes.Control often disguises itself as wisdom. But underneath it is fear.People manipulate situations because they fear uncertainty. They manipulate relationships because they fear abandonment. They manipulate circumstances because they fear failure.Control is often an attempt to replace trust. When we trust Christ, we surrender outcomes to Him.Jesus never tried to control every situation. He walked in complete dependence upon the Father. The person pushing the agenda of control is exhausted. The person surrendered to Christ finds rest.THE AGENDA OF RECOGNITIONMatthew 6:1 (ESV)“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them.”Recognition can become an addiction.People want:TitlesPlatformsFollowersApplauseInfluenceThere is nothing wrong with influence. The problem comes when influence becomes the goal instead of obedience. The Pharisees loved recognition.Jesus loved obedience. The Pharisees wanted people to notice them.Jesus wanted people to see the Father. The flesh asks:“What do I get from this?”The Spirit asks:“How is Christ glorified through this?”THE AGENDA OF PROVING YOURSELFRomans 8:1 (ESV)“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”Many believers are trying to prove something.Trying to prove:They are good enough. They are spiritual enough. They are smart enough. They are worthy enough. The tragedy is that Christ already proved your worth at Calvary. The cross is God’s declaration that you are worth redeeming. The resurrection is God’s declaration that the payment was accepted. You do not have to spend your life proving what God has already declared. When Jesus cried:“It is finished.”He removed the burden of self-justification. When justification is sought from anything else, then we are not trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ!THE AGENDA OF FEAR2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV)“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”Fear drives many decisions.Fear of rejection.Fear of failure.Fear of criticism.Fear of loss.Fear makes people compromise convictions.Fear makes people stay silent when they should speak.Fear makes people pursue things God never told them to pursue.Fear is a cruel master.Faith is freedom. The believer who knows Christ has already secured his future does not have to be driven by fear.CHRIST’S AGENDALuke 19:10 (ESV)“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”Jesus had one agenda. The glory of the Father. The redemption of humanity.Everything He did flowed from love. Not insecurity. Not fear. Not a need for approval. Not a desire for recognition.Jesus never performed a miracle to impress anyone. He never preached to gain followers. He never healed to build a reputation.Everything He did was rooted in obedience to the Father.John 8:29 (ESV)“I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”What a statement. Can you imagine living with that kind of freedom? Not driven by people. Not driven by fear. Not driven by wounds. Not driven by acceptance. But driven by love for the Father. That was Christ’s agenda.APPLICATIONAsk yourself honestly:Why am I doing what I’m doing? And how does it effect those around me?What is driving my decisions? What is fueling my agenda? What is fueling my relationships? What is fueling my service? What is fueling my ambition? If Christ removed condemnation…Why are you still trying to prove yourself? If Christ accepted you…Why are you still begging for approval? If Christ secured your future…Why are you still living in fear?If Christ is Lord…Why are you trying to control everything? The Gospel frees us from agendas rooted in the flesh. The Gospel anchors us in Christ.Closing InsightThe Holy Spirit is exposing motives in this hour. Motives that are not rooted in christ. Motives that are not rooted in true love. Not to condemn His people. But to shift them, transform them, and to free them.God is calling believers out of performance and into sonship.Out of striving and into rest.Out of self-promotion and into Christ-exaltation.The days ahead will reveal what has been built from flesh and what has been built from faith. I am praying that the motives not rooted in Christ be exposed to bring freedom! The Lord is asking His Church:“What agenda are you pushing?”Because whatever is not rooted in Christ will eventually be shaken. I am not the judge, but He is, His word is!But what is built upon Christ will remain.“When Christ becomes enough, every other agenda loses its power. The believer who knows who he is in Christ no longer has to spend his life proving it.” — Pastor Robert Young Galatians 1:10KJV1900
