- Introduction:A most important book:Martin Luther would call this “the epistle to which he was betrothed, his Katie von Bora.”- His wife, an intimate expression of personal attachment and commitmentGalatians becomes an important book because it deals with the most principle aspect of our salvation: faith!!This is so important because what we will understand is that our standing before God is not based off of what we do, what rules we follow, but that we simply believed, as Abraham did.Timing:Probably one of Paul’s first letters he has writtenMany believe this is written before the council of Jerusalem in Acts 15.Paul’s IntroV.1O: Paul, an apostleI: Paul here identifies himselfA: We see that first, Paul wrote this letterSecondly, he identifies himself as an apostleApostle simply means one who is sentIn this case, Paul is also identifying himself for the sake of authority on this matter that he writesGalatians 1. The Writer and the Readers (1–2)
The word apostle as Paul uses it here does not merely refer to one who has a message to announce, but to an appointed representative with an official status who is provided with the credentials of his office. -Kenneth Wuest
O: (not sent from men nor through the agency of man,I: Paul wasn’t an apostle because of a person’s idea or some mission board making him oneA: Paul will make it a point that the Galatians know that men have not been his influence in what he preaches, nor in what his calling has beenO: but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead)I: Paul’s calling is in Jesus and the FatherA: Jesus and the Father… why mention both?It will be old testament laws that Paul is combatting, and he wants them to be assured that he is not presenting them something that is new nor contrary to the God of the Old covenant, but in fact, this is His perfect will.Realize this about Jesus… Everything He says and does is exactly what the Father does.John 5:19 NASB95 19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.John 5:30 NASB95 30 “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.John 8:28 NASB95 28 So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.John 12:49 NASB95 49 “For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.John 10:30 NASB95 30 “I and the Father are one.”The Father, who raised Jesus from the deadRemember just last week in 2 Corinthians 13:42 Corinthians 13:4 NASB95 4 For indeed He was crucified because of weakness, yet He lives because of the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, yet we will live with Him because of the power of God directed toward you.and then in 1 Corinthians 6:141 Corinthians 6:14 NASB95 14 Now God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up through His power.Through the resurrection, we see the power of God on full display!!V.2O: and all the brethren who are with me, to the churches of GalatiaI: Paul has a cohort of men traveling with him, greeting the Galatians. This letter is written to the Churches (multiple)A: Galatia is a region in the Roman empireOrginally settled by Celtic people (Or the Gaels) in the third century BC, eventually the Romans defeated them but would remain a dependant kingdom under teh authority of the Romans. There is the Northern region and then the southern regionNot sure if Paul is writing to one region or the other, or both. UnimportantBeing Gaelic, they are a Gentile region, but we see in Acts 13 that there were Jewish synagogues in the region. Even interesting enough, the Jews had a strong influence against the gospel, which is probably one of the reasons this letter was so important. Similar to what we see in Acts 14:1-2Acts 14:1–2 NASB95 1 In Iconium they entered the synagogue of the Jews together, and spoke in such a manner that a large number of people believed, both of Jews and of Greeks. 2 But the Jews who disbelieved stirred up the minds of the Gentiles and embittered them against the brethren.V.3O: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,I: Paul wants them to be founded in Grace and peace… not the law and insecurityA: Remember, grace, unmerited favor, getting what you don’t deserveWe can truly find peace when we stop trying to earn what we never could.V.4O: who gave Himself for our sinsI: Jesus gave His life for our sins, our wrong doing, our rebellionA: Contrary to popular belief, Jesus gave Himself for our sinsJesus didn’t come to be a good example to us, He didn’t come so we could atone for our own sins, but He came and gave Himself for our sins.Jesus gave Himself. We read in John 10:17-18John 10:17–18 NASB95 17 “For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. 18 “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”Jesus GAVE HIMSELF… Nobody made Him do it, He did it on His own.For our sinsWe read in Romans 3:23Romans 3:23 NASB95 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,Romans 6:23 NASB95 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.We are also told in Isaiah 59:2Isaiah 59:2 NASB95 2 But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear. Why did Jesus give Himself for our sins, why did He need to do that??Because sin separates, sins price is deathIn Leviticus 17:11Leviticus 17:11 NASB95 11 ‘For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.’This is explained more plainly in Hebrews 9:22Hebrews 9:22 NASB95 22 And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. And the reason of Christ giving of Himself is beautifully explained in Hebrews 9:11-14Hebrews 9:11–14 NASB95 11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; 12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?Jesus gave Himself for our sinsO: so that He might rescue (deliver) us from this present evil ageI: So we would be saved from the evil one and his domainA: I like how David Guzik explains thisGalatians 2. Paul Sends His Apostolic Greeting (3–5)The idea behind the word deliver is not deliverance from the presence of something, but deliverance from the power of something. We will not be delivered from the presence of this present evil age until we go to be with Jesus. But we can experience deliverance from the power of this present evil age right now.
Satan’s power on us has been broken through Christ, Death’s victory has been put to rest in Christ. We are no longer held under bondage, but now live in freedom. This is why I love this book, this will be beautifully explained as we carry on.O: according to the will of our God and FatherI: This was the perfect will of the FatherA: This is what we celebrate today… the coming of Jesus. The Christmas story.John 3:16 NASB95 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.Because God loved us so much, He gave His one and only Son.This is also what Isaiah says in Isaiah 53:10-11Isaiah 53:10–11 NASB95 10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. 11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities. This was the will of the Father, that His Son would GIVE HIS LIFE AWAY!!!V.5O: to whom be the glory forevermore. AmenI: That God, Jesus, would receive the name that is above every name, that God the Father would be glorified in Jesus His Son.A: This gospel message, this good news is not in contradiction to God and His word in the Old Testament, this is to bring the glory forevermore to our gracious, loving God who desires peace to all men, through Jesus Christ. And today, you can receive that peace, but believing in the One, Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for YOUR sin, to rescue you from this present evil age. To receive the greatest gift you will ever receive, Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. John 5:19NASB95
