- Different Gifts, Same GodWeek 2: Different Gifts, Same GodTEXT: 1 Corinthians 12:4-7I. IntroductionLast week we looked at the first three verses of 1 Corinthians 12, and Paul showed us something very important. The true work of the Holy Spirit will always honor Jesus as Lord. The Spirit does not lead us away from Christ. He leads us under the Lordship of Christ. But now Paul takes the next step. If Jesus is Lord, and if the Spirit is truly working in the church, what does that look like among God’s people? Paul’s answer is beautiful. It does not look like everybody doing the same thing. It does not look like every believer having the same gift. It does not look like every ministry functioning the same way. Paul says there are different gifts, different ministries, and different activities, but it is the same Spirit, the same Lord, and the same God working through His people. In other words, God creates variety without creating division.II. READLet's read our text.
1 Corinthians 12:1–7 NKJV Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:Same Spirit — the Holy Spirit gives the gifts Same Lord — Jesus governs the service Same God — the Father empowers the workIII. Diversities of Gifts - Same Spirit (vs 4)1 Corinthians 12:4 NKJV There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.Paul begins with the word diversitiesA. "Diversities"a. Different kindsb. Different distributionsc. Different expressionGod does not give everyone the same gift, this is His design, based on your design. Everyone had a different calling/assignment. There is an anointing that accompanies our gifting.B. Gifts - Supernatural Gifts (Not Talent)a. Some teachb. Some encouragec. some served. some preache. Some serve in places no one ever seesC. "Same Spirit"a. Holy Spirit gives the giftsb. A body with many membersDifference does not mean divided. Difference was God’s design.ApplicationThis corrects comparison.Same Spirit — the Holy Spirit gives the giftsIV. Different Ministries - Same Lord (vs 5)1 Corinthians 12:5 NKJV There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. Now Paul moves from Gifts to MinistriesA. "Different Ministries"a. Where gifts serveb. How a gifts serveB. "Same Lord"a. Gift is under the Lordship of Jesusb. The Spirit gives the gift, but Jesus governs the giftApplication:Before you ask: Where can I use my gift?I need to ask : Is Jesus Lord over my gift? Before I ask: What ministry do I want?I need to ask: Lord, where do You want me to serve?Same Spirit — the Holy Spirit gives the giftsSame Lord — Jesus governs the serviceV. Diversity of Activities - Same God (vs 6)1 Corinthians 12:6 NKJV And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.Paul now moves from gifts to ministries to activitiesA. The word activities carries the idea of workings, operations, effects, or resultsB. God works through His people in different waysa. The gift is differentb. The ministry is differentc. The activity is differentBut it is the same God who works all in allSame Spirit — the Holy Spirit gives the gifts Same Lord — Jesus governs the service Same God — the Father empowers the workVI. Given to Each One to Profit All1 Corinthians 12:7 NKJV But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:A. Everyone has a giftB. Everyone mattersC. God has an assignment and purpose for everyone1 Corinthians 1:11–13 NKJV For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?VII. ConclusionSo the question is not, “Do I have the same gift as someone else?” The question is, “Am I using what God has given me for the good of the body?” Paul says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. That means God has placed something in His people that is meant to strengthen His church. Your gift may not look like someone else’s gift. Your ministry may not be in the same place. Your activity may not produce the same visible result. But if it comes from the same Spirit, serves the same Lord, and is empowered by the same God, then it matters. The gift is given to each on, but the purpose is for all.VIII. Prayer:Be Blessed. 1 Corinthians 12:1–7NLT
