    Hebrews 6:1–2 KJV 1900
    Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
    III. Principles of the doctrine of Christ (vs 1)

    Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

    VI. Laying on of Hands — Identification With the Sacrifice
    A. Foundation
    Laying on of hands represents identification, connection, blessing, commissioning, impartation, or agreement.
    One of the earliest biblical pictures is found in the Old Testament sacrificial system.
    VI. The Identified With the Sacrifice
    Leviticus 1:4 NKJV
    Then he shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.
    A. Purpose
    The worshiper placed his hand upon the head of the burnt offering.
    The sacrifice was accepted on his behalf to make atonement.
    B. The Meaning
    The hand represented identification.
    The innocent sacrifice stood in the place of the guilty worshiper.
    There was identification before there was sacrifice.
    IV. The Pattern
    A. The Priest
    The priest laid his hand upon the bullock before it was killed.
    Leviticus 4:4 NKJV
    He shall bring the bull to the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the Lord, lay his hand on the bull’s head, and kill the bull before the Lord.
    B. The Congregation
    The elders laid their hands upon the bullock on behalf of the people. (Lev. 4:15)
    C. The Ruler
    The ruler laid his hand upon the goat before it was killed. (Lev. 4:24)
    D. The Common Person
    The individual laid his hand upon the sin offering. (Lev. 4:29)
    E. The Principle
    Position did not change the need for substitution.
    The hand connected the worshiper with the sacrifice.
    IV. The Day of Atonement
    Leviticus 16:21 NKJV
    Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, concerning all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a suitable man.
    A. The Scapegoat
    Leviticus 16:21–22 NKJV
    Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, concerning all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a suitable man. The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to an uninhabited land; and he shall release the goat in the wilderness.
    a. Aaron confessed Israel’s iniquities, transgressions, and sins over the goat. (Lev. 16:21)
    b. Their sins were symbolically placed upon the goat.
    B. The Goat Bore Their Iniquities
    The goat carried their sins into the wilderness. (Lev. 16:22)
    The people had the sin.
    The sacrifice bore the sin.
    The sacrifice carried the sin away.
    C. This Reveals Two Important Truths
    Identification.
    Substitution.
    V. The Old Testament Sacrifices Pointed to Christ
    A. Animal Sacrifices Were Temporary
    Hebrews 10:4 NKJV
    For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sin
    The blood of bulls and goats could not permanently take away sin. (Heb. 10:4)
    The sacrifices had to be repeated.
    B. They Pointed to a Greater Sacrifice
    The innocent died for the guilty.
    The substitute bore what belonged to another.
    Jesus fulfilled that picture.
    VI. Jesus Became Our Substitute
    A. Our Iniquity Was Laid Upon Him
    Isaiah 53:6 NKJV
    All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
    “The LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isa. 53:6)
    Jesus did not die because He had sinned.
    Jesus died because we had sinned.
    B. Jesus Was Made Sin for Us
    2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
    For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
    Christ knew no sin. (2 Cor. 5:21)
    He was made sin for us.
    We are made the righteousness of God in Him.
    C. Jesus Bore Our Sins
    1 Peter 2:24 NKJV
    who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
    Isaiah 53:11–12 NKJV
    He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
    He bore our sins in His own body on the tree. (1 Pet. 2:24)
    He bore our iniquities. (Isa. 53:11–12)
    VII. Jesus Fulfilled the Picture of the Scapegoat
    A. Jesus Bore Our Sin
    Hebrews 9:28 NKJV
    so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.
    B. Jesus Suffered Outside the Gate
    Old Testament sacrifices were taken outside the camp. (Heb. 13:11)
    Hebrews 13:11 NKJV
    For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned outside the camp.
    b. Jesus suffered outside the gate. (Heb. 13:12)
    Hebrews 13:12 NKJV
    Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate.
    C. Jesus Carried What Belonged to Us
    Our sin.
    Our guilt.
    Our condemnation.
    Our curse. (Gal. 3:13)
    VIII. Jesus Offered the Final Sacrifice
    A. Old Testament Sacrifices Were Repeated
    Priests continually offered sacrifices. (Heb. 10:11)
    Hebrews 10:11 NKJV
    And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
    B. Jesus Offered One Sacrifice
    Jesus offered His body once for all. (Heb. 10:10)
    Hebrews 10:10 NKJV
    By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
    b. He offered one sacrifice for sins forever. (Heb. 10:12)
    Hebrews 10:12 NKJV
    But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,
