- Big Idea: The value of a soul is priceless to God. It should therefore be our focus to reach the lost.
Luke 15:1–7 NKJV 1 Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.” 3 So He spoke this parable to them, saying: 4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ 7 I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.Matthew 9:36 “36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.”I. Jesus Sees the OneOfficer Buckley talked to us about scanning right to left because it made the brain slow down and take in more information. When we go left to right everything just blends in. When we go about our lives many times we can easily become blind to looking for the lost because everyone seems to just “blend in”.If we just take a moment and slow down the frames of life we can see many lost people that need to be found. This morning in the text we see someone in an intentional pursuit. Jesus takes notice of those who are lost.Luke 15:4 NKJV 4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?Our goal has continually been to reach the lost. Teach the found and Change the world. As a church grows if it is not CAREFUL and INTENTIONAL, it can quickly to shift from an evangelistic to an inwardly focused body. It can become easy to get comfortable with the 99. But we must always “emember the ONE”John 4:7–10 NKJV 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”The preceding passage is started earlier in this chapter by saying Jesus “must needs” go to Samaria. Although his assignment was to the lost house of Israel (Matthew 15:24, his ultimate assignment was to the world Ephesians 3:4-6), He went on a mission to reach the overlooked and the outcast. He went into Samaria where Jews would not go, to reach people others were not interested in reaching. If we could peer into the past in Mark 10 We could hear a Blind man name Bartimaeus screaming. “Son of David, have mercy on me!” While others urged him to be quiet, he cried all the more! There are many who are looking for Jesus today, but their brokeness is an inconvenience for those who are well. Jesus says to you today, “You are never and inconvenience for Him!” You are never to broken for Him to reach out and heal you. You are never too damaged that he will overlook you.Power Principle: There are many who are looking for Jesus today, but their brokeness is an inconvenience for those who are well. Jesus says to you today, “You are never and inconvenience for Him!”When it is inconvenient for others to take the time, Jesus hears. When you feel there is novone to hear, Jesus will hear it.When you feel like your weight would drag others down, Jesus can carry it.Mark 10:46–52 NKJV 46 Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying to him, “Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you.” 50 And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. 51 So Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” The blind man said to Him, “Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.” 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.II. The Lost Matter to GodThere may be someone in the building who might say “I’m the special case. No one notices me. No one cares whether I am here or not.”I’ve come to tell you the Lost Matter to GodLuke 19:10 NKJV 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”And you might be of the mind this morning that “If God actually cares, he certainly is taking his time.” Many people grow weary . But God has a word this morning through the epistle of 2 Peter2 Peter 3:1–9 NKJV 1 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, 3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.Peter tells us that God’s delay is mercy! He is giving us time.ezekiel 34:11-16 reference scriptureIII. Compassions Causes Us the SeeMatthew 9:36 NKJV 36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. In this scripture Jesus is tired but and has come to the side but when he sees the people he has a Reaction that was down in his gut. The greek would depict it as a deep impacting gut reaction. He was deeply moved by those that were lost. HE looked upon people who were emotionally, mentally and spiritually drained. He was moved by it.Similarly those who seek the heart of God should be moved by those who are the least and the lost.Power Principle: The goal is a soul!Luke 15:7 NKJV 7 I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.Acts 3:19 NKJV 19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,CHALLENGE TO THE CHURCHFind:A FriendA CoworkerA Family MemberA NeighborA intentionally pray for and reach out for 111 Acts 4:30–31NKJV
