  • Lesson 3: Unshakeable Identity Psalm 16:5-6

    Big Idea: The believer should find full satisfaction in God. Belonging to Him should keep us centered and focused. We can enjoy the blessings of the earth (1 Timothy 6:17). But we cannot draw from it our identity.

    5 Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.

    God is my portion

    Colossians 3:1–4 NIV
    1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
    WHO AM I REALLY IN GOD?
    We Rise or fall on our identity. Our identity shapes our behaviour. How we see ourself determines the boundaries we set, the things we allow from our own behavior and how we move forward in this life. The enemy sense the beginning of creation has fought to make us doubt our identity and believe that God is not enough. Genesis 3:5
    All over the world identity is under attack.
    When I don’t understand the identity of a thing, I will misuse the thing from it’s intended purpose. This will render the MISIDENTIFIED thing as eventually broken or ineffective.
    This is why it is vital to learn our true identity and God and teach it to our children.
    In world where many seem to never be satisfied and nothing seems to be enough. We are bombarded with subliminal and overt messages. The messages leave us constantly working and never at peace. Trying to be loved and accepted. Trying to justify and convince ourselves and others we are accepted. God has rescued us from the constant striving. Christ has saved us from striving to be made right with God. Our identity is no longer in our past sins or our mistakes and failures. We are made new in Christ.
    The psalmist this morning is saying that the deepest and most gratifying stages of life rest with God and goes much deeper than what this world has to offer. Our identity rest in God
    Regenerated view of who we are.
    No longer bound by guilt and condemnation
    No longer chained to expectations of low-level living. We are invited and encouraged to holiness.
    Transition: Because we are often trying to overcompensate from a measure that we will never meet. We replace grace with striving and accomplishment. Striving robs us of peace and contentment.
    Ephesians 1:11–14 NIV
    11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

    Contentment in Christ

    1 Timothy 6:1–8 NIV
    1 All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered. 2 Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers. Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare of their slaves. These are the things you are to teach and insist on. 3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.
    Philippians 4:11–13 NIV
    11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
