    Introduction

    What does it mean to produce good?
    All those things are good but many times we leave a question hanging in the balance.. WHY?
    Why should I do the things?
    What motivates our good works?
    This morning we are going to explore Spirit Produced Goodness
    True fruit is a spontaneous work of Holy Spirit. Because the seed is Holy Spirit himself, character traits are produced in our lives that bare the image of Christ. Therefore, a surrendered Christian life will both produce fruit and Glorify God through the display of Christ’s character.
    All our life we are told to be good. But what is good really? Do we really focus on the product of the Good or the SOURCE? Remember, the world always tries to produce the result apart from God.
    We love philanthropy and charitable works
    We love community service and doing good things
    But if those things are produced apart from God, they will be short lived works and will not produce a lasting result. Neither will they point us to God who is the source of all TRUE goodness.
    Worldly Goodness. People who have no religious affiliation with faith at all can show generosity. They can be helpful. They can even be mannerable and polite. They can do moral things. We do not pretend that worldly good acts don’t have value in our society. But they are merely surface level actions. God is trying to produce something much deeper in us and through us.
    Power Principle : A good deed is something that is done. Biblical goodness is something that Holy Spirit produces in us and expresses through us.
    This morning God is calling us to something Deeper than the surface.
    It is an elevation from just moral behavior. It is a product of an actual spiritual rebirth.

    I. The True Source of Goodness

    John 15:4–5 NKJV
    4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
    In John 15, Jesus reminds us that in order to produce true biblical fruit we must be connected to the Him. Biblical goodness is expressed through us and is initiated from the Spirit of God in us. We must remember that: Although fruit appears on the branch, but it does not originate in the branch. The life that produces it comes from the vine.

    We provide a submitted vessel through which God can produce goodness. Without the true source we must ask ourselves:
    Am I producing Goodness or merely Good works?
    We must realize the source of goodness. If not we will try to ascribe that source to ourselves.
    This combats two religious trains of thought:

    A. Self -Righteous produced Good

    Self-righteousness - This is where we believe we are the source of goodness and that it is our work that our own moral fortitude is what has produced Goodness
    The producer of the work seeks credit and affirmation for the work. It is about making themselves feel good or receiving affirmation. When we think we are the sourceof good, we can become addicted to doing Kinds acts, not because they glorify God but because they make us feel good about ourselves.

    Power Principle: Some do good not from a place of wholeness, but from a place of brokenness.
    Many use good deeds to mask lack of self worth.
    Some do it seeking affirmation to combat their insecurity.
    Some do good because they want to please people because they fear being alone. They want to keep people around them. They don’t think their true selves could draw attract the people they want. They are habitual people pleasures and fear being alone.
    Some do good produced by shame. They are trying to make up for wrong doing
    Matthew 7:21–23 NKJV
    21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
    SS: RELIGION…. NO RELATIONSHIP

    B. PASSIVE BEHAVIOR TOWARD GOOD

    Some feel that they are under no obligation at all to give any effort and so they do not submit to the Spirit
    They do not let yield themselves to service or Goodness.
    Matthew 25:40–46 NKJV
    40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ 41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ 44 “Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
    The believer MUST avoid both extremes.
    Philippians 2:13 NKJV
    13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
    The fruit of goodness does not come from our good works. It comes from the Holy Spirit that gave the work.

    II. Goodness Glorifies God and Blesses Others

    Goodness goes far beyond, having good manners and being a philanthropist. It is a moral excellence produced by the Spirit. It is both the desire and ability to reflect the character of God in our actions. Goodness shows up through:
    Compassion and generosity
    Integrity and justice
    obedience, sacrifice and even correction.
    Matthew 5:13–16 NKJV
    13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
    What fruit am I allowing Holy Spirit to produce in my life?
    What is better because the Spirit is producing goodness in my life?
    My family?
    My relationships?
    Close:
    Today is the day we offer a submitted life. A life that is available to Holy Spirit to produce goodness in us.
    Goodness apart from from relationship is unfruitful. Good acts alone do not garuantee a relationship with God. There are civic organizations that do community service but are far from the community of faith.
    Good works must go beyond improving and image and truly glorifying God’s image.
