  • Key Scripture Mark 6:45-50
    Mark 6:45–50 NKJV
45 Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away. 46 And when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray. 47 Now when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land. 48 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by. 49 And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”
Introduction: Scripture quickly moves from one miraculous account to another in the Feeding of the 5000 in Mark 6 at the bank of the Sea of Galilee at Tabgha which is also known as Heptapegon “place of seven springs”.
Today I would like to highlight 3 accounts from scripture found in Mark 6, Matthew 14, and John 6.
Jesus instructed His disciple to depart from the city they were in and head to Bethsaida. John 6:15 outlines that the crowd after seeing and partaking of the miracle of multiplication they believed Him to be a prophet and were ready to force him to be King.
    John 6:15 NKJV
15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.
Scripture bears out that Jesus departed as He had at other times to get alone and pray.
Jesus was demonstrating His role as intercessor, yet Jesus’ intercession for the disciples did not prevent the storm from occuring.
We read more about this intercession in Hebrews 7 and 8 which outlines that Jesus is our High Priest of a better covenant, who seated at the Right Hand of God is mediating for us continuously.
    John 6:16 NKJV
16 Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
    John 6:17 NKJV
17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them.
The disciples waited as long as they could, being fishermen didn’t want to row in the heat of the day.
Yet, Jesus lingered on the Mountain praying. as we see in Mark 6:46 “46 And when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray.
John 6:15 “15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.
Matthew 14:23 “23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.”
Even in times of intercession; we are still launched in to Storms.
Luke 22:32 “32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.””
In the midst of Storms Jesus still sees you as we read in
Mark 6:4848 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by.”
In the middle of opposition it matters how we talk about it matters.

    Your Opposition

    Mark 6:48 NKJV
48 Then He saw them straining(basanizo) at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by.
    John 6:18–19 NKJV
18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. 19 So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid.
    Matthew 14:24 NKJV
24 But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed(basanizo) by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
The disciples set forth over the Sea and all was in order. However when the Wind began to Stir it caused their order to became disorder.
Mark 6 and Matthew 14 specifies the intensity of the struggle G928 that it was as it was Greatly Troubled to the point of torture.
Greek Word Basanizo (VB) Strongs G928 for context also found in Luke 8:28 when legion spoke to about not tormenting him.
Mark’s Account - Jesus Saw them - There are times we need reminded that Jesus sees you.
John’s Account - Jesus Knows how long you’ve Struggled
Matthew’s Account - Jesus knows your limits .
The Wind which was around them causing their Trouble would soon be put into perspective.
Matthew 14:25 “25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.”
Jesus came to them in the midst of the Wind, and the thing which the disciples struggled with Jesus was under His feet. Say ALL MY PROBLEMS, are under His feet!

    Empowered to Action

    Matthew 14:26 NKJV
26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.
    Matthew 14:27 NKJV
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”
Be of Good Cheer - Literally Translated - Take Courage
    It is I - Translated Literally - I AM
It was after this moment that the other two narratives wrap up.
Everyone say I have a different story..
Matthew recounts of how on disciple was empowered to Action.
Peter called out after Jesus, bid me to Come.
Only some will respond to the Word of the Lord with Faith and Arise!
Some people only want to tell an account in which complete all things successfully.
Scripture bares out that the Wind was contrary to them. - Yet, Christ overcame those things which were contrary and Peter emboldened by the Word of the Lord stood contrary to what previously had greatly distressed them.
The other disciples in that moment were comfortable to deployed and on the journey alone, yet Peter was empowered to Arise and walk out by Faith to demonstrate that through Christ he could overcome what had caused them to be tormented.
    Closing Prayer
Father Thank You that You have Overcome as Scripture accounts and ascribes to You that the Forces of this world You have Walked upon. I thank You that Your calling us to launch forward to not only living a life which is heading to the place you have instructed us to go, but that we would at Your word be compelled to Walk in Faith on top of the circumstances which seem to greatly distress us.
