  • On Mission: Introduction

Good morning, we are going to enter a new series called “On Mission”.
The mission of Living Hope is to
    Make Disciples
    Equip the Saints
Reconcile the World to God through Jesus Christ
It is important to understand each of these in the context of scripture, and practically as we are called to declare the Living Hope of Jesus to Abilene.
Over the next four weeks, leading up to Mother’s Day, we will cover:
    I. On Mission to Non-Christians (Evangelism)
II. On Mission to New-Christians (Discipleship)
III. On Mission to Hurting-Christians (Healing)
IV. On Mission to Growing-Christians (Purpose)

    I. Jesus Goes On Purpose for the Lost

    “Jesus went just for her
Key Text: - John 4:3–4 – “Now He had to go through Samaria.”
    John 4:3–4 NKJV
3 He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 But He needed to go through Samaria.
*Explanation:* - Jews normally avoided Samaria.
    - “Had to” (dei) points to *divine mission*, not geography.
    - This woman was not an interruption; she was the assignment.
    *Support Scriptures:*
    - *Luke 19:10* – “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
    Luke 19:10 NKJV
10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
    - *Romans 5:8* – “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
    Romans 5:8 NKJV
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
    - *2 Corinthians 5:18–19* – God is reconciling the world to Himself.
    2 Corinthians 5:18–19 NKJV
18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
    *Mission Application:*
    - Mission begins when we see people as appointments, not accidents.
    - Non‑Christians are not projects—they are people Jesus is already pursuing.

II. Jesus Meets People Where They Are (No Prerequisites)

“Jesus met her where she was”
Key Text: - John 4:6–7 – Jesus is tired, thirsty, and starts with a simple request.
    John 4:6–7 NKJV
6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
    *Explanation:*
    - Jesus crosses *racial*, *gender*, *moral*, and *religious* barriers.
    - He doesn’t begin with correction, but with *connection*.
    *Support Scriptures:*
    - *Romans 10:14* – “How can they believe unless someone tells them?”
    Romans 10:14 NKJV
14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
    - *1 Corinthians 9:22* – “I have become all things to all people…”
    1 Corinthians 9:22 NKJV
22 to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
    - *Matthew 9:12* – “It is not the healthy who need a doctor…”
    Matthew 9:12 NKJV
12 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
    *Mission Application:*
    - We don’t clean people up before introducing them to Jesus.
    - Grace always precedes truth.

III. Jesus Offers Living Water — Himself

    “Jesus offered her living water”
    Key Text: - John 4:10, 13–14
    John 4:13–14 NKJV
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
    John 4:10 NKJV
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
    *Explanation:*
    - The woman came for water but encountered *the source of life*.
    - Religion offers effort; Jesus offers *life*.
    *Support Scriptures:*
    - *Isaiah 55:1* – “Come, all you who are thirsty…”
    Isaiah 55:1 NKJV
1 “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.
    - *Jeremiah 2:13* – Broken cisterns that can’t hold water.
    Jeremiah 2:13 NKJV
13 “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.
    - *John 7:37–38* – “Let anyone who is thirsty come to Me.”
    John 7:37–38 NKJV
37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
    *Mission Application:*
    - Our mission is not to offer arguments, but *living water*.
    - Only Jesus satisfies the deepest thirst of the human heart.

IV. An Encounter with Jesus Changes Everything

    “She experienced Jesus”
Key Text: - John 4:25–26 – “I who speak to you am He.”
    John 4:25–26 NKJV
25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
    *Explanation:*
    - Jesus reveals Himself personally and clearly.
    - The woman is known, not shamed—and transformed.
    *Support Scriptures:*
    - *2 Corinthians 5:17* – “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come.”
    2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
    - *Psalm 34:8* – “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”
    Psalm 34:8 NKJV
8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
    - *John 1:14* – Grace and truth embodied.
    John 1:14 NKJV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
    *Mission Application:*
    - People don’t argue their way into faith—they encounter Jesus.
    - Our role is to create space for that encounter.

    V. Changed People Tell Others

    “She told everyone
Key Text: - John 4:28–29 – She leaves her jar and goes back to the town.
    John 4:28–29 NKJV
28 The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
    *Explanation:*
    - The jar represents her old life and old pursuits. - She doesn’t have all the answers—just a story.
    *Support Scriptures:*
    - *Acts 1:8* – “You will be My witnesses…”
    Acts 1:8 NKJV
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
    - *Psalm 107:2* – “Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story.”
    Psalm 107:2 NKJV
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy,
    - *Mark 5:19* – “Go home and tell what the Lord has done for you.”
    Mark 5:19 NKJV
19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.”
    *Mission Application:*
    - Evangelism is overflow, not obligation.
    - A transformed life is the most compelling testimony.

VI. When One Encounters Jesus, Many Are Invited

    “They experienced Him too”
    Key Text: - John 4:39–42
    John 4:39–42 NKJV
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own word. 42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
    *Explanation:*
    - The town moves from second‑hand faith to first‑hand experience.
    - One woman’s story leads to a community encounter with Jesus.
    *Support Scriptures:*
    - *Matthew 28:19–20* – The Great Commission.
    Matthew 28:19–20 NKJV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
    - *Romans 1:16* – The power of the gospel.
    Romans 1:16 NKJV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
    - *Colossians 1:6* – The gospel bearing fruit everywhere.
    Colossians 1:6 NKJV
    6 which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth;
    *Mission Application:*
    - God’s mission always multiplies.
    - When the church joins Jesus on mission, entire communities are changed.

    On Mission Question:

Who is your “Samaria”? Who is the person Jesus may be sending you to *on purpose*?
    *Prayer Focus:*
    - Ask God to open our eyes to divine appointments.
    - Ask for courage to cross barriers.
    - Ask for hearts that overflow with living water.
