- Acts 2:1–4; Acts 2:42–47
Acts 2:1–4 NKJV 1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.Acts 2:42–47 NKJV 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. 46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.“UNITED IN ONE PLACE”Pentecost shows us that when God’s people gather in unity, obey Jesus’ command to wait, and open themselves to the Spirit, heaven moves — and the world sees the evidence.Today, we celebrate what is known around the world as Pentecost Sunday. The word “Pentecost” comes from 50 days past the firstfruits to celebrate the harvest. It is 7 weeks from the firstfruits. The Jews celebrated Pentecost (also known as Shavuoth) to commemorate when God gave the Torah to the Israelites and united them as a people from the scattered people to one people under God.In Acts, we see that 50 days after the Resurrection of Jesus, the Holy Spirit is poured out over God’s people. For the Israelites, God gave Himself through the written Word.At Christmas, God gave Himself through the Living Word - JesusAt Pentecost, God gave Himself through the Illuminated Word - the Holy Spirit leading us into all Truth. It is amazing, because in Genesis 11, we see that there was only one language, spoken by all the people, but they wanted to make a name for themselves so the would not be scattered. They built a tower, which was a symbol of their united effort to establish a name for themselves that would last. God chose to scatter them across the world by giving them separate languages which divided them.On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came in tongues of fire over those in the upper room and they began to speak in different languages, all united by the Holy Spirit under ONE name - Jesus Christ; Christians.Acts 2:1 — “They were all together in one place.”Key Truth: Before the Spirit moved, the saints moved into unity. Pentecost didn’t begin with tongues of fire — it began with hearts aligned.Supporting Scriptures:Unity is where God commands the blessing. Psalm 133:1–3Psalm 133:1–3 NKJV 1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of his garments. 3 It is like the dew of Hermon, Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing— Life forevermore.Jesus prayed that our unity would reveal Him to the world. John 17:20–23John 17:20–23 NKJV 20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.They were “with one accord in prayer.” Acts 1:14Acts 1:14 NKJV 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.Illustration: Unity is like tuning an orchestra. Each instrument is different, but when tuned to the same pitch, they create harmony. The early church wasn’t identical — but they were tuned to the same Spirit.Application: Unity is not sameness; it’s surrendering personal preference for God’s purpose. Pentecost power flows where unity is protected.THE ENEMY’S ATTACK — Offense“The devil sows personal offense to break supernatural unity.”How it works:A small misunderstanding becomes a big separation.Hurt feelings become hardened hearts.Offense blocks the flow of the Spirit. How the Enemy Attacks This Unity: He sows personal offense.Explanation: Before the Spirit can divide tongues of fire, the enemy tries to divide hearts. Offense is one of his sharpest tools because it feels justified. A small misunderstanding becomes a wedge. A hurt feeling becomes a wall. A preference becomes a dividing line.Scripture Insight:Paul warns that unforgiveness gives Satan an advantage. 2 Corinthians 2:10–112 Corinthians 2:10–11 NKJV 10 Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, 11 lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.Where envy and selfish ambition exist, disorder follows. James 3:16James 3:16 NKJV 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.Illustration: A tiny pebble in a shoe can ruin a long walk. Not because the pebble is big, but because it’s never removed. Offense works the same way — small, but destructive if left unattended.Guardrail for the Church: Choose reconciliation over resentment. Unity requires humility, quick forgiveness, and choosing relationship over being right.Truth: Unity is not optional for revival — it is the atmosphere where God commands blessing.APPLICATION FOR THE CHURCHChoose reconciliation over resentment. Protect unity like it’s sacred — because it is.Release offense quickly.Pursue unity intentionally.Pray together consistently.Expect the Spirit to move where unity is honored.ALTAR CALLInvite people to:Lay down offenseRecommit to unityAsk for a fresh outpouring of the Spirit“Lord, make us one — so You can move again.” Acts 2:1–4CSB
