SERMON DISCUSSION FOR 11/02/2025 MATTHEW 5:4, 7:1-5
1. What does it mean to “grieve over sin” in a godly way? How is this different from worldly sorrow or guilt?
Follow-up: Can you think of a time when conviction led to lasting change in your life? What helped you move from guilt to grace?
Action Step: Spend time in prayer this week asking God to reveal any area of your life where you’ve grown numb or dismissive toward sin. Write it down, confess it, and surrender it to Him.
2. Charles Spurgeon said, “I have learned to kiss the wave that throws me against the Rock of Ages.” How can painful or humbling experiences push us closer to Jesus?
Follow-up: What “waves” in your life right now might God be using to draw you nearer to Him?
Action Step: Journal or pray through one current struggle, naming how you’ve seen (or hope to see) God’s grace at work in it.
3. How does the image of God as a “mosaic artist” breaking and reshaping us into something beautiful change the way you see your own brokenness?
Follow-up: What part of your story could God use to display His beauty and healing to someone else?
Action Step: Share a brief part of your “mosaic story” with someone this week; a place where God turned brokenness into blessing.
4. Why is repentance essential for a healthy church? How does repentance as a community differ from individual repentance?
Follow-up: What would it look like for our church to be known not for programs or perfection, but for humility and repentance?
Action Step: Pray daily for our (or your) church this week, that God would make us a people who continually grieve over sin, return to grace, and walk in renewed obedience.
5. Jesus teaches that we must deal with the “log in our own eye” before helping others with their “speck.” What makes this so hard to do in practice?
Follow-up: How can we hold others accountable with grace and humility rather than judgment or pride?
Action Step: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal one area where you may have been quick to judge. Take one concrete step toward humility, such as apologizing, listening, or extending grace.
6. The sermon said, “Only the broken can help the broken. Only the forgiven can point others to forgiveness.” How might our personal repentance make us more effective witnesses for Christ?
Follow-up: What does it mean for you personally to live as a “minister of reconciliation” in your relationships or community?
Action Step: Look for one opportunity this week to extend forgiveness, encourage repentance, or share Christ’s restoring love with someone who is hurting.
