- We are starting a new series as we journey towards Easter.I want to take several weeks to look at the various titles of Jesus what each one means,Now of course there are a lot of them, 20-40 depending on how you count them. So, I will focus only on a few of them.We are going to start In the Beginning, in John Chapter 1.
John 1:1–4 ESV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. Here we have one of the most incredible descriptions of who and what Jesus is.He is called the Word - Logos in greek.Logos - such a packed word.it is the root for the word Logicwhich of course becomes the foundation for knowledge and sciencethe suffix “-ology”It is used in all sorts of writing and storytellingA Pro-log is the before the story, and epi-log comes after the storyIt is the identifying mark for businesses, their logoAnd of course it simply means “word” as in something spoken. But that implies language, and structure, and thought, and communicationSo in a way, it is a word that means the source of everythingAnd John does something interesting at the beginning of His Gospel, He specifically calls back to the very beginning of the BibleGenesis 1:1–3 ESV In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. In the beginning, God created everythingJohn says in the Beginning was the Logos, - the word who was with God and who was GodSo The Word is separate from God but also part of Godand through the word all things were made,And God speaks and everything comes into being. His Word creates all things.John 1:14 ESV And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. And the Logos Became flesh and dwelt among us.Jesus is the Word become flesh, God made human. The Very power of God’s creation, now walking among us humans, as one of us.So what does this tell us about Jesus?Well to answer that lets look at what it means to bear God’s word.Deuteronomy 18:15–19 ESV “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’ And the Lord said to me, ‘They are right in what they have spoken. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.Deuteronomy is Moses’s farewell speech, and here he mentions that even though he is going to die, and not enter the promised land, that God will raise up a Prophet like him who will speak the Words of God.Now to be fair he biblical definition of a prophet is someone who speaks the words of God.And there were dozens of such prophets throughout the old testament.Amos Explains that when God speaks he cannot help but share God’s Message:Amos 3:7–8 ESV “For the Lord God does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken; who can but prophesy?”And Jeremiah said that God’s word was like a fire, that would consume those who heard it.Jeremiah 5:14 ESV Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts: “Because you have spoken this word, behold, I am making my words in your mouth a fire, and this people wood, and the fire shall consume them.I just shared with you guys my two favorite Bible verses. I’ve been waiting a long time to include them in a sermon. And throughout all the Prophets, every time God sends them a message it says “the Word of the Lord came to someone”the phrase is used over 200 times in the Old testament. But Out of all those prophets, there is only one person who is even comparable to moses, who spoke to God face to face, who recieved the Torah - the law, and enacted the covenant between God and his people.and in fact in many ways he surpasses moses. And that is Jesus. And look about what Jesus says about what he speaks:John 12:44–50 ESV And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”Jesus while he was on earth was still in complete unity with God, he only spoke what God commanded him to say, so that those who believe him may be saved. All this to say Jesus is not just a prophet, speaking the words of God, he is THE ultimate Prophet, God’s Word taking human form. And in a sense Jesus is the source of all the prophecies of the Old testament.Every time someone says “The Word of the Lord came to me”Who is the word of the Lord? - Jesus,You could read the prophecies of the Old testament as “Jesus came to Jeremiah”Jeremiah 1:4–9 ESV Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.” Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. Now Jesus came to me and said...Church that is a beautiful way to look at what is happening throughout the entire Bible. So Jesus is the Power of Creation, he is the Source of knowledge and wisdom, and the Ultimate prophet.all this because he is the Logos, the Word of God.So Church, how are we to respond to the Word of God, who dwelt among us?How do we follow him today?Psalm 119:11 ESV I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.In fact Psalm 119 in its entirety is a meditation of how Mankind out to relate to God’s Word.It is a very long poem 22 sections one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet with 8 verses each, each verse beginning with whatever letter they are in.a sort of meditating on God’s word from A to Z.But in this verse, the Psalmist says “I have hidden your Word in my heart.”And as we have established Jesus is God’s word.SO we need Jesus in our Hearts, and when he is there he will overcome the sin in our lives. But there is another way to read this, the more obvious way, and that is to hide God’s written word, the Bible in our hearts.Church the best defence against temptation is knowing God’s word. When Jesus was tempted by satan how did he respond? by quoting the Bible.Church we need to be reading and studying our Bibles, memorizing it, seeking to know it fully,Because if Jesus is the Word of God made flesh, and the Bible is the written recorded words of God, then the best way to know Jesus is to know the Bible.they are intertwined, and inseparable. Then church as we study the Bible and Soak up God’s word, and hide it in our hearts, then when life comes our way, and we face troubles or temptations, or misfortune, the Word of the Lord can come to us, and help us through, and help us guide others as well.Church so often i hear people saying I wish God would speak to me, like he did with Jeremiah, or Daniel.and all i can think is “HE DID - through the Bible which is His Word, and through Jesus, who is His Word.If you want to hear God speak, open your bibles. study them, meditate on them. And then when you hear God speak through His Word, Share it.That’s where my favorite bible verses come inGod Has spoken, who can but prophecy - proclaim his word.
