- We have been exploring the Titles of Jesus, as We approach Easter.we looked at Jesus as the Logos - the Word of God,the source of Truth and Knowledge and wisdom. We looked at Jesus as the Christ or Messiah - the Anointed one,Who makes things right between God and ManWe looked at Jesus as our Rabbi - Our teacherWho trains us to follow in his waysThis wee we are exploring Jesus as the Son of God.This is how the Gospel of Mark introduces Jesus.
Mark 1:1 ESV The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.This is quite the claim!and its not a metaphorical one.Jesus didn’t have a biological father like every other person,he was the son of God.When Mary learned that she would be carrying Jesus, the angel Gabriel explained:Luke 1:30–35 ESV And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.So Jesus is the literal Son of God.And When Jesus is Grown up, this is something that God himself affirms multiple times, the first time when Jesus is baptized.Mark 1:9–11 ESV In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”So Jesus is God’s Son, Which is crazy to think about because if you were to ask the Jewish of that day people who the messiah is, almost none of them would have said “the Messiah is the Son of God”The Messiah was supposed to be a king or priest, or perhaps both,The messiah was supposed to be a warlord and a prophet, who could drive away the romansthe messiah was supposed to be descended from David. But God’s Son?Well, actually if they looked in the right place it would become clear that yes, the Messiah is God’s son.Psalm 2 ESV Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. This psalms starts with the Nations rebelling against God, and God isn’t that concerned about it,He laughs at their feeble attemptsAnd God sets his king in Zion - JerusalemAnd then God says to that king - You are my Son, today i have borne youAsk me whatever you desire and it will be yoursand then the Son Judges the rebellious nations. And blesses those who seek refuge in him. This is one of the only places in the Old testament where it specifically says that the Son of God would be the king who judges the nations. The MessiahThere are other places that infer it - many that we speak around Christmas - the virgin will bear a son and call his name Immanuel - God with us.Showing that God himself is the savior.the first person to recognize this, and make this connection is Peter.Matthew 16:13–18 ESV Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.Jesus takes his disciples away to ask them what people say about him, and when Peter responds “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” he is making a statementJesus is The Messiah and the Messiah is God.Jesus is not just a man Chosen by God to lead the people, he is God himself in human form. And Jesus blesses peter for this recognition, and this is where Peter gets the name peter- Rock, and on this rock i will build my church. And it is this same claim of Peter’s that gets Jesus killed.Matthew 26:63–66 ESV But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.”The High priest accuses Jesus of Blasphemy.Because he, a man, claimed to be equal with God, by being God’s son.Which would be blasphemy if it were not true. Now Notice, Jesus does not say that He is the Son of God here,he claims another title, Son of ManWe will discuss that next week.No the Priest asks, “are you the son of God,” and Jesus replies “So you say.”But Jesus does not boast in himself as being the son of God,Look how Paul describes this attitude:Philippians 2:5–8 ESV Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.Jesus is the Son of God, which makes him God, but he does not consider his equality of God as a thing to be grasped, but instead he humbles himself and is obedient to his Father. In fact when Jesus was wandering in the wilderness fasting for 40 days, this was Satan’s main line of temptation.Matthew 4:1–11 ESV Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.He was telling Jesus to prove himself to be the Son of God, and when Jesus refused to claim that authority for himself, he tried to give Jesus everything he could have wanted, an easy way out, and Jesus refused. Now Jesus might not have ever called himself the Son of God, but he did not shy away from calling God his Father. In the four gospels he calls God “Father” 165 times. For comparison God is only called father 15 times in the Old testament.and then it is often in a metaphorical and prophetic sense. But Jesus reframes the relationship with God, not just for himself saying “God is my father”But also for us:Look at how Jesus teaches his disciples to Pray:Matthew 6:9 ESV Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.In Jesus God is not just our Lord he is our Father.and So Jesus explains in this same sermon,Matthew 7:7–11 ESV “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!You see church the Son of God became a man, so that we could become children of God.So no longer is God just the father of Jesus, but he is OUR Father, and he wants to give good things to his children.John explained it best in the beginning of his GospelJohn 1:11–13 ESV He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.He came into the world, and his people - the Jewish people did not receive him, but to all who do receive him, jew gentile, we become children of God, born not of flesh but of God.Church that is what it means to be born again. To accept Christ as your savior and spiritually be reborn not just as a new person, but as a child of God.SO Church if you have recieved Christ, if you have put your faith in him and his sacrifice, if you recognize him as the Christ the Son of the Living God, then you have become children of God as well. And so we ought to live like His Children. And how do we do that?By living like the Son.
