Studying the Engineering of the Armor of God
Encourage you as Seth Bills recently said:
to Pull out your Sword and Follow Along
    Ephesians 6:10 soon
    Why this lesson?
Initially thought of a few years ago
A new approach, as an Engineer
You can learn a lot by examining a design
    About the Designer
How they think / Thought Process
Why it was designed a certain way
    Why not another?
    Their Intentions
    See the Purpose
    How things connect
    Parts interface with each other
    What it is made of
Why that material was chosen over another
This armor design was created by The Great Designer
    Creator of the Universe
    No one more intelligent, EVER
THAT is how I want to be able to think
    Who better to learn from?
Our goal as Christians -> Become more like him
    On hold for awhile
    What was I thinking?
    Thought about it
    Collected Ideas
I believe there is More to this than we usually see / hear
    Deeper Dive
    Really Examine Scripture
With each part, examine like an Engineer
    What does it do?
    How does it work?
Why is it this way, and not another way?
What can we learn about God
    REPEAT
    Jordon’s Series this year
    “Piece by Piece”
    Studying the Armor of God
    Didn’t get to Finish
    Draw to conclusion
    Tie all together
    Make Application
“Reverse Engineer” the Armor of God
Learn more about Him and how he thinks
See what deeper things may be in this design we often miss
Tie together the studies from this last year
Look into Application (especially this Evening)
    What lessons can we learn
how can we use them to improve our methodology
    Use in our daily life
I am hopeful this lesson will be Useful and Encouraging to each of you
Encourage you Each to come back this evening to hear the Truly transformational part of the lesson, wrapping it all together

    The Armor

Doing things a little different than I have in the past
at Profitable for Teaching in Alabama, Tom Holly emphasized the importance of Showing God’s Word a level of Reverence
    Read from Physical Bible
    People seeing you doing so
More clear you are speaking God’s Word, not your own
    Ephesians 6:10–20 CSB
10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens. 13 For this reason take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. 14 Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, 15 and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. 16 In every situation take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit—which is the word of God. 18 Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints. 19 Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel. 20 For this I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I might be bold enough to speak about it as I should.

    Belt of Truth

    “loins girt about”
    Ephesians 6:14 KJV 1900
    14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
    Ephesians 6:14 ASV
14 Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
NKJV - “...Having girded your waist with truth...”
    What does this mean?
    Similar imagery:
    Exodus 12:11 KJV 1900
11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s passover.
    1 Peter 1:13 ASV
    13 Wherefore girding up the loins of your mind, be sober and set your hope perfectly on the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
    Acts 12:8 LEB
8 And the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and put on your sandals!” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me!”
    Meaning:
People in that time frame and part of the world
    Long Flowing garments
To be unhampered in there movements
before starting a journey or engaging in any work,
bind their long flowing garments close around their bodies
    Everything all tucked away properly
    Fasten with a Girdle
Belt without a buckle (especially rope/cord)
    What does it do?
    Real belt / Girdle
    Holds your clothes together
    Out of your way
    Belt of Truth
The truth will help a christian “Get himself together” to be unhampered for the Service at hand
    Service to God
We need to be unhindered to do God’s will effectively!
    Preparation
You need to know the truth before you can spread it!
    How does it work?
    Truth holds everything together
    Everything falls apart without Truth
Think about someone gone in depth with Lies
Truth comes out- Everything falls apart
    Physical Bible
    Ephesians 5:6–14 CSB
6 Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for God’s wrath is coming on the disobedient because of these things. 7 Therefore, do not become their partners. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light— 9 for the fruit of the light consists of all goodness, righteousness, and truth— 10 testing what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Don’t participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what is done by them in secret. 13 Everything exposed by the light is made visible, 14 for what makes everything visible is light. Therefore it is said: Get up, sleeper, and rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.
    Physical Bible
    Truth is Consistent
    I dont know about you
I don’t want something inconsistent or unreliable to be holding up my pants!
    James 1:16–18 CSB
16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 By his own choice, he gave us birth by the word of truth so that we would be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
We need to Be “In the Truth” / Surrounded by it (like a belt or girdle)
    3 John 3–4 CSB
3 For I was very glad when fellow believers came and testified to your fidelity to the truth—how you are walking in truth. 4 I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are walking in truth.
Walking in truth - being in truth
    Proverbs 23:23 CSB
23 Buy—and do not sell—truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
We need to Seek and Acquire truth.
    Hold on to it.
    Don’t get rid of it.
    The truth doesn’t stretch
A belt you can rely on put weight upon, will not stretch
    Otherwise, things will fall
Similarly, We cannot be Loose with the Truth of God’s Word
If God says do ___, Do it
If God says Don’t ___, Stay away from it!
Truth can be uncomfortable, but Critical
If you do not regularly wear a belt, it can feel a bit uncomfortable
But if you are truly working, you need a belt
Allows you to use both hands
    put things on the belt
    Truth - Nathan confronting David
    2 Sam 12
David was made Uncomfortable by the Truth
    A LIFELINE, not a Weapon
Nathan didn’t use the truth to Strangle David
He used it as a solid hold, to SAVE him from the fall off the cliff
    Why this way?
God is the source of Truth
    Psalm 119:160 CSB
160 The entirety of your word is truth, each of your righteous judgments endures forever.
    John 17:17–19 CSB
17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 I sanctify myself for them, so that they also may be sanctified by the truth.
    Psalm 119:104 CSB
104 I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every false way.
    1 Timothy 3:15 CSB
15 But if I should be delayed, I have written so that you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
God is the Source of Truth,
    he is Consistent,
and that is why we need to prepare ourselves through his Truth
Everything held together by his Truth

    Breastplate of Righteousness

    Ephesians 6:14 ESV
14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
    What does it do?
Protects what is Critical to Survival
Arms or legs damaged or Lost - Survive
Heart and Lungs - Critical to Survival
Protects the “Power Plant” of the body
Righteousness protects your Spiritual “power plant”
Spiritual lungs - Breath of Life
    Spiritual Heart -
    (not the physical organ)
    The Inner Man
Jordon’s lesson from earlier this year covered this well
    How does it work?
Righteousness provides Boldness - “Power plant”
    Proverbs 28:1 CSB
1 The wicked flee when no one is pursuing them, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.
If you are not Upright and Righteous, your Breastplate (on your Chest) will not protect you!
Boldness like Stephen, working in the Hearts of the Pharisees
    Acts 7:54–57 LEB
54 Now when they heard these things, they were infuriated in their hearts and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57 But crying out with a loud voice, they stopped their ears and rushed at him with one purpose.
Consider Who and Where we are Fighting
    Ephesians 6:12 CSB
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.
The Greek word for “Heavens” / “Heavenly Places” has 3 meanings
    The air
    The Starry Region
    The Dwelling Place of God
    Here, it is the first
    Physical Bible
    Ephesians 2:1–3 CSB
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins 2 in which you previously walked according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient. 3 We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath as the others were also.
    Physical Bible
We are in the realm where Satan has power.
But see who is on Our side
God gives the Breath of Life
    Isaiah 42:5 CSB
5 This is what God, the Lord, says— who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk on it—
He created all, His Righteousness is above the powers here
    2 Corinthians 5:21–6:1 CSB
21 He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 1 Working together with him, we also appeal to you, “Don’t receive the grace of God in vain.”
    Biblical Heart - Inner man
    Jordon’s lesson earlier this year
    The biblical heart is not
    Physical Organ
    Emotions
    Sincerity
    it DOES:
    Think evil
    Mark 2:8 CSB
8 Right away Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were thinking like this within themselves and said to them, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?
    Understand
    Seat of Emotions
    Determines
    Acts 2:37–40 CSB
37 When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt generation!”
    Why this way?
    Physical Bible
    Philippians 3:7–11 CSB
7 But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss because of Christ. 8 More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them as dung, so that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own from the law, but one that is through faith in Christ—the righteousness from God based on faith. 10 My goal is to know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death, 11 assuming that I will somehow reach the resurrection from among the dead.
    Physical Bible
If we aren’t properly protecting our Heart and Lungs with God’s Righteousness,
We will be Overtaken by the evil power of the air
Our Heart will be stuck on our Evil ways
God can lead us to Healing through precise piercing to the Heart

Feet Sandaled with Readiness for the Gospel of Peace

    Ephesians 6:15 CSB
15 and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace.
    What does it do?
Readiness - Ties right back to vs 14, Girding, and to Exodus
    Preparing yourself
    Our mission & Purpose
    Matthew 28:18–20 CSB
18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
    How does it work?
This has to do with our Approach
Power of the Gospel of Peace
    Philippians 4:7 CSB
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
    John 14:27 CSB
27 “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.
If you are not always ready to defend and spread the Gospel, you will miss opportunities
    Souls will be Lost
You don’t necessarily have time to go put your socks and shoes on, you have to be ready to go!
Same here - You don’t always have time to hunt down an answer to something
You must be Ready to Go with sharing the word of the Gospel, when someone’s heart is Ripe
    Plant those seeds.
    2 Timothy 4:2–5 CSB
2 Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and teaching. 3 For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear. 4 They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths. 5 But as for you, exercise self-control in everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
God’s Word has the power to convert
    Psalm 19:7–11 KJV 1900
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: And in keeping of them there is great reward.
It is not about Our power, it is about the power of HIS word
    Our mission and power
    1 Corinthians 1:17–18 CSB
17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ will not be emptied of its effect. 18 For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is the power of God to us who are being saved.
We need to preach the gospel - Spread the word
People will NEVER be baptized for the forgiveness of their sins if they don’t first hear the word!
Note on context - This is where people were saying “I belong to Paul” or others “I belong to Apollos”
This is why he spoke about not being sent to Baptize
Our end goal should be to bring people to Christ
Yes, baptism is a part of that
But YOU FIRST GOTTA SPREAD THE WORD
    Tom Holly
“Do you identify yourself as a Christian? Do you WANT to be identified as a Christian? Just talk jjto people about the bible!”
    Think about that
    Why this way?
Sandals- not fastest shoes, nor most protective
    Expose ourselves some
If we don’t expose some of ourselves to those we try to teach, we could seem “Better than Thou”
    Approach with Care
If you don’t move with care while wearing sandals, your foot is going to get hurt
If you are not easy when you try to bring someone the Gospel, you can turn their heart away God
Speed - It takes time for the Gospel message to work into people.
You have to take time to study with people
    Be Patient

Shield of Faith - Extinguish the Darts

    Ephesians 6:16 CSB
16 In every situation take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
    What does it do?
Dan Ruegg spoke very well on this in his Gospel Meeting this year
Flame burns and spreads inside us as Temptation
Trying to get us to give in
    But see this:
    1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
The shield of Faith, Trusting in God, allows you to Endure it - Outlast it
The shield allows you to last longer
    How does it work?
A shield made of Metal can deflect fiery darts without taking any damage
The shield of a Christian is his Faith in the Great Commander, who has given HIS assurance of Victory
The shield Protects your Eyes & changes how you Look
    Physical Bible
    2 Corinthians 4:7–18 CSB
7 Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us. 8 We are afflicted in every way but not crushed; we are perplexed but not in despair; 9 we are persecuted but not abandoned; we are struck down but not destroyed. 10 We always carry the death of Jesus in our body, so that the life of Jesus may also be displayed in our body. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’s sake, so that Jesus’s life may also be displayed in our mortal flesh. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life in you. 13 And since we have the same spirit of faith in keeping with what is written, I believed, therefore I spoke, we also believe, and therefore speak. 14 For we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you. 15 Indeed, everything is for your benefit so that, as grace extends through more and more people, it may cause thanksgiving to increase to the glory of God. 16 Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day. 17 For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory. 18 So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
    Physical Bible
Looking by Faith changes our perspective
    Puts everything into appropriate proportions
Temporary affliction and suffering in this world <<<<<<< Promise of Eternal Glory
    incomparably smaller
    Why this way?
    Physical Bible - Red
    1 Peter 4:7–19 CSB
7 The end of all things is near; therefore, be alert and sober-minded for prayer. 8 Above all, maintain constant love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Be hospitable to one another without complaining. 10 Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God. 11 If anyone speaks, let it be as one who speaks God’s words; if anyone serves, let it be from the strength God provides, so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. 12 Dear friends, don’t be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you, as if something unusual were happening to you. 2 13 Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 Let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler. 16 But if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed but let him glorify God in having that name. 17 For the time has come for judgment to begin with God’s household, and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God? 18 And if a righteous person is saved with difficulty, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner? 19 So then, let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust themselves to a faithful Creator while doing what is good.
    Physical Bible - Red
We should not be surprised when Attacks from the Enemy come upon us!
When a Disciple of Christ gives up to the attacks of the Enemy, it is (at least in part) because his Faith is Weak, and he acts as if the experience was unforeseen
We need to ALWAYS have our shield of Faith UP
The FIRST thing the enemy encounters
if you are Embracing this present life, your shield is not at guard
Meanwhile, If we are entrusting ourselves to the Faithful Creator, we will know that He will help us through
We cannot allow the flaming darts to hit, and make a burning temptation inside us
Our shields of Faith must ALWAYS be UP
Deflect & Extinguish the Darts with low effort
    “plink”

    Helmet of Salvation

    Ephesians 6:17 CSB
17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit—which is the word of God.
    What does it do?
    A helmet protects your Head
It protects where / how you think
    How does it work?
If Salvation is on your Mind (Gesture Helmet) - The battle at hand is not your concern
    2 Corinthians 4:16–18 CSB
16 Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day. 17 For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory. 18 So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Keeping your mind constantly Focused on the Goal prevents distractions of this life
A Christian can Face any Foe and even Rejoice in Death, because of his Salvation after Death
    Why this way?
    1 Thessalonians 5:8–11 CSB
8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled and put on the armor of faith and love, and a helmet of the hope of salvation. 9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.
    vs 8 “Hope of Salvation”
    Keep your Head Up!!!
Look ahead to what is to come
Why - That is not what God set us here to do.
With our mind focused on Salvation, it is easier to help others keep the right mindset

Sword of the Spirit - Word of God

    Ephesians 6:17 CSB
17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit—which is the word of God.
    What does it do?
    Sword is a weapon
    Both Offense and Defense
Strikes down and cuts the lies of the enemy
Sometimes, we will need to use God’s word to piece the hearts of others, like Stephen did
Note this is the only weapon supplied
Our struggle will be Close Contact
    No Long-Range fighting
Satan will attack in ways that are close to us
    Job
    Family
    Wealth
    Friends
    Health
    How does it work?
    Example by Jesus:
    Physical Bible - Black
    Matthew 4:1–11 CSB
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 Then the tempter approached him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will give his angels orders concerning you, and they will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” 7 Jesus told him, “It is also written: Do not test the Lord your God.” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus told him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and began to serve him.
    Physical Bible - Black
Notice how at Every temptation, Jesus respond’s with God’s Word
    His first, instinctive response
    Why this way?
Satan will try an Manipulate God’s word against you
Look at with Eve in the Garden
    Added One 3 letter word
    Completely changed meaning
Since the Days of the Apostles, The Holy Spirit only speaks to man through the Bible
As such - A Christian Solder can only “Fight the Good Fight of Faith” if they truly Know what it teaches
    Power of the Word
    Hebrews 4:12–16 CSB
12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 No creature is hidden from him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account. 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
    Think about that power
A weapon that Sharp Needs Care
    Like a Surgeon
Without Practice and Skill -> Much Damage
    To yourself
Poor understanding of the context and intentions of verses
    To Others
    Shut someone down
You must be precise, gentle and careful with your delivery of God’s Word - Like with the Shoes
Practice only comes by spending time in the Word, Studying
Without that knowledge and skill, you can’t fight a good stand.
You will not endure the Battle
    You will be defeated.
As we wrap up this morning think about these things through this afternoon:
How are you doing with your Armor?
Are you Practiced with the Sword, the Word of God? Do you really know it?
Is your shield of Faith Strong? Or is it laid to the side?
Have those Flaming Darts made their way through and started burning temptation inside of you?
Do you have on your Breastplate of Righteousness, Living a Godly life?
Has Sin snuck its way in?
Have you tightened your reliable Belt of Truth? or is Everything falling apart?
Are your feet really sandaled with Readiness, and Preparedness to spread the Gospel of Peace?
The Good News of Salvation through Christ?
Are you Wearing your Helmet of Salvation, with your Mind Focused on the Life to come?
Have you ever put it on to begin with?
Have you began your Journey with Christ, being Baptized for the forgiveness of your sins?
If there is any way we can help you,
whether you need prayers of congregation
or to begin the journey with Christ
Encourage you to come to the front
