Introduction
Turn to 2 Timothy 2:2
There’s an old cliche that says,
“Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”
That statement isn’t found in Scripture, but I think that there’s some truth to it.
It’s far better to equip capable people to provide for themselves than it is to be always providing for them.
We have a variety of people in the room this evening. Some of you have been saved for a short time. Others have been saved for decades. Yet I believe that wherever you fall on that spectrum I believe that you will benefit from this series. No matter how far you have travelled on your journey of faith in Christ, you will benefit from this series.
Here’s why: my objective in this series is not simply to teach you the foundational concepts of our faith. Church family, my objective is to equip you to teach someone else the foundational concepts of our faith.
Read 2 Timothy 2:2
Look at that verse and tell me this: what was Paul’s objective when he taught other people like Timothy? His objective was that they be equipped to teach others also.
That’s how the faith gets passed down from one generation to the next. That’s how Christianity went from the book of Acts to the present day. It’s because generation after generation practiced 2 Timothy 2:2.
I am going to teach this series with a 2 Timothy 2:2 mindset!
Maybe God hasn’t called you and gifted you to be a teacher such as we see in the New Testament, and that’s okay. But Christian, you can still teach someone else the basics of what you have been taught. That is the biblical pattern. That is the only way our faith will endure beyond ourselves. It is if we take the biblical mandate, apply it to ourselves, and go teach someone else.
True discipleship is a way of life, not just a book, but this is a resource to help you disciple someone else. See Jesus as an example.
Here’s how this series will work:
Every week, you read a chapter ahead and fill in the blanks from the verses provided
On Wednesday, we will review the chapter and discuss it.
By doing this, we will be practicing exactly what I do when I use this book as a discipleship resource.
Our goal: to equip you to do this with someone else - maybe a grandchild, maybe a newcomer to the church, maybe a friend.
It’s not hard. It’s not complicated. We’ll use this book as our roadmap.
