*Psalm 72:1-19

Leader: Give the king your justice, O God,

                 and your righteousness to the royal son!

All:      May he judge your people with righteousness,

                 and your poor with justice!

Leader: Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people,

                 and the hills, in righteousness!

All:      May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,

                 give deliverance to the children of the needy,

                 and crush the oppressor!

Leader: May they fear you while the sun endures,

                 and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!

All:      May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass,

                 like showers that water the earth!

Leader: In his days may the righteous flourish,

                 and peace abound, till the moon be no more!

All:      May he have dominion from sea to sea,

                 and from the River to the ends of the earth!

Leader: May desert tribes bow down before him,

                 and his enemies lick the dust!

All:      May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands render him tribute; may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts!

Leader: May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him!

All:      For he delivers the needy when he calls,

                 the poor and him who has no helper.

Leader: He has pity on the weak and the needy,

                 and saves the lives of the needy.

All:      From oppression and violence he redeems their life,

                 and precious is their blood in his sight.

Leader: Long may he live; may gold of Sheba be given to him!

                  May prayer be made for him continually,

                 and blessings invoked for him all the day!

All:      May there be abundance of grain in the land; on the tops of the mountains may it wave; may its fruit be like Lebanon; and may people blossom in the cities

                 like the grass of the field!

Leader: May his name endure forever, his fame continue as

                  long as the sun! May people be blessed in him,

                  all nations call him blessed!

All:      Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,

                 who alone does wondrous things.

Leader: Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen!

*Hymn of Preparation – # 439

“Christ Shall Have Dominion”

Christ shall have dominion over land and sea,

Earth's remotest regions shall his empire be;

they that wilds inhabit shall their worship bring,

kings shall render tribute, nations serve our King.

Refrain:

Christ shall have dominion over land and sea,

earth's remotest regions shall his empire be.

When the needy seek him, he will mercy show;

yea, the weak and helpless shall his pity know;

he will surely save them from oppression's might,

for their lives are precious in his holy sight. [Refrain]

Ever and forever shall his name endure,

long as suns continue it shall stand secure;

and in him forever all men shall be blest,

and all nations hail him King of kings confessed. [Refrain]

Unto God Almighty joyful Zion sings;

he alone is glorious, doing wondrous things.

Evermore, ye people, bless his glorious name,

his eternal glory through the earth proclaim. [Refrain]

Invocation

Congregational Confession of Sin

Leader: Have mercy on us, O God, according to your unfailing love, blot out our transgressions.

All:      For we confess our transgressions, and our sin is always before us. Against you, you only, have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight.

Leader: Hide your face from our sins and blot out all our iniquity. Create in us a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within us.

All:     You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Amen.

Assurance of Forgiveness

“If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.”

Psalm 130:3,4

*First Reading – Isaiah 64:1-12

Adoration and Praise

*Congregational Response – Hymn # 493

“We Have Not Known Thee As We Ought”

We have not known thee as we ought,

nor learned thy wisdom, grace and pow'r;

the things of earth have filled our thought,

and trifles of the passing hour.

Lord, give us light thy truth to see,

and make us wise in knowing thee.

We have not feared thee as we ought,

nor bowed beneath thine awful eye,

nor guarded deed, and word, and thought,

remembering that God was nigh.

Lord, give us faith to know thee near,

and grant the grace of holy fear.

 We have not loved thee as we ought,

nor cared that we are loved by thee;

thy presence we have coldly sought,

and feebly longed thy face to see.

Lord, give a pure and loving heart

to feel and own the love thou art.

We have not served thee as we ought;

alas! the duties left undone,

the work with little fervor wrought,

the battles lost, or scarcely won!

Lord, give the zeal, and give the might,

for thee to toil, for thee to fight.

When shall we know thee as we ought,

and fear, and love, and serve aright!

When shall we, out of trial brought,

be perfect in the land of light!

Lord, may we day by day prepare

to see thy face, and serve thee there.

* Confession of Faith                   The Westminster Shorter Catechism

Question 35: What is sanctification?

Sanctification is the work of God’s free grace, whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God, and are enabled more and more to die unto sin, and live unto righteousness.

Question 36: What are the benefits which in this life do accompany or flow from justification, adoption, and sanctification?

The benefits which in this life do accompany or flow from justification, adoption, and sanctification, are, assurance of God’s love, peace of conscience, joy in the Holy Ghost, increase of grace, and perseverance therein to the end.

*The Gloria Patri

God’s Blessing on His People

 *Congregational Response – Hymn # 540

“A Few More Years Shall Roll”

A few more years shall roll,

a few more seasons come,

and we shall be with those that rest

asleep within the tomb:

then, O my Lord, prepare

my soul for that great day;

Refrain:

O wash me in thy precious blood,

and take my sins away.

A few more storms shall beat

on this wild rocky shore,

and we shall be where tempests cease,

and surges swell no more:

then, O my Lord, prepare

my soul for that calm day; [Refrain]

A few more Sabbaths here

shall cheer us on our way,

and we shall reach the endless rest,

th'eternal Sabbath day:

then, O my Lord, prepare

my soul for that sweet day; [Refrain]

'Tis but a little while,

and he shall come again

who died that we might live, who lives

that we with him may reign:

then, O my Lord, prepare

my soul for that glad day; [Refrain]
