  • Introduction

    Over the past year I have been working on my physical fitness.
    I have wanted to get stronger and leaner.
    When I played hockey and rodeoed I struggled to get strong.
    I would try and lift, exercise, skate, train and I just could not put on muscle.
    I chalked it up to my body type.
    And some of that is true some men can put on muscle easier.
    but now working with a dietician and lifting I am gaining some mass for the first time.
    What is the difference??
    I now understand better protein, certain foods, calories, workouts and what kind of workouts.
    I always knew that diet and exercise were important.
    In fact if I surveyed the room today I bet we would all agree that diet and exercise is important.
    but we can agree they are important and be like me and not know exactly why and how each contribute to overall health.
    For the next several weeks we are going to look in God’s word about things we all know about.
    Men, women, and marriage.
    Yet, is it possible like diet and exercise we know about men and women.
    We know they are good, they are not a mistake.
    And yet we live not real sure how they are designed.
    And spoiler alert- when you see God’s good design for men and women and we function according to design.
    It is so good!!
    Turn with me to Genesis 2 in your Bibles.
    I want to make some contextual comments before we dig into the particulars.

    Context of Genesis 2

    I. The Focus of Genesis 2 is Day 6 of Creation specifically men, women, and marriage.

    I know that we just ended day 7 in verses 1-3.
    But chapter 2 deals with the particulars of day 6 which was the creation of land creatures and humans.
    Let me show you 2:4-6
    4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that Yahweh God made earth and heaven.
    Now look what it says
    5 Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet grown, for Yahweh God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.
    6 But a stream would rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.
    What day of creation did God make the plants?
    It was day 3.
    Who is uniquely made to cultivate the ground?
    but is not yet made?
    Man
    And in our next verse is the creation of man.
    7 Then Yahweh God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and so the man became a living being.
    So we are zeroing in on day 6
    The focus is mankind.

    II. Most of the Instruction is to Adam not Eve

    Eve is not created until later in Genesis 2:22-23.
    Genesis 2:22–23 (LSB) 22 And Yahweh God fashioned the rib, which He had taken from the man, into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, “This one finally is bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; This one shall be called Woman, Because this one was taken out of Man.”
    Chapter 1 speaks of God making man in his image both male and female.
    This is true.
    Yet, day 6 of creation has a specific order to it.

    III. Paul later teaches us that the Order is Important

    Look behind me or turn in your Bible’s to 1 Tim 2:9-13
    Paul is instructing women in the church.
    1 Timothy 2:9–13 (LSB) 9 Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, with modesty and self-restraint, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women professing godliness.
    The women are to dress appropriately, not immodest or drawing undo attention to themselves.
    instead they are to be adorned with godliness.
    Then Paul says
    11 A woman must learn in quietness, in all submission. 12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 For it was Adam who was first formed, and then Eve.
    What this teaches is that Adam being formed first has with it a created order or structure between men and women.
    This is not roles I dont like that term, because they can change, this is design.
    There is a design by God of men and women that is purposeful.
    So with the focus on day 6.
    Then the understanding that most of this teaching is directed to Adam
    And then the understanding that Adam being created first is purposeful for understanding God’s design of men and women we are ready to dive in.
    This sermon is going to be focused on men.
    What do we learn about what it means to be a man revealed in Genesis 2?

    You are Made By God (v.7a)

    7 Then Yahweh God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and so the man became a living being.
    When we read that Yahweh God formed man of the dust and breathed life into him.
    We need to be reminded men that our lives are not our own.
    What do we have that has not been given to us?
    Dr. Naselli when writing about men
    speaks of two types that are not God’s good design
    the macho man- is self focused and when things dont go his way he throws adult temper tantrums in fits of anger
    the passive man- is self focused and does not take responsibility to lead as God had designed him.
    Both of these kinds of men are self focused- both live as if their lives are their own.
    Selfishness must be confronted turned from instead men we are designed by God and for God.
    Christian man listen to Paul in the context of sexual sin.
    1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (LSB) 19 Or do you not know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you were bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
    Your life is because of God you do not own yourself.
    Jesus purchased you from the slave market of sin and made you his own.
    Men of Truth we are memorizing 2 Timothy 2:1-4.
    2 Timothy 2:3–4 3 Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.
    We are soldiers
    He is the one who enlisted us, we have one aim to please Him.
    Men we are not our own we belong to Jesus as his soldiers.
    The starting place for every man is to submit yourself body and soul to Jesus Christ in obedience to Him.
    Second

    You are Made By God Masculine (v.7b)

    7 Then Yahweh God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and so the man became a living being.
    Men are men by God’s design.
    He formed man of dust this includes all of our masculine features.
    Physically and spiritually created male and created female
    Men and women are not created equal but distinct by God.
    I. God Designed Men Physically
    Bone structure
    Muscle mass-
    Testosterone- Dartmouth Health and Cleveland Clinic
    adult men have a range between 300-1000 (ng/dL)
    women- 15-70 (ng/dL)
    if a women is on the high end 70 (ng/dL) and a man is on the low end 300 (ng/dL) that man has 4.3x as much testosterone than that woman.
    II. God Designed Men Internally
    I believe this is tied to our physical makeup but men are wired internally different than women.
    Genesis 1:27 (LSB) 27 And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
    Men are created differently then women.
    Men are created with different motors, things that get them going than women.
    Example:
    Why do men see a mountain and say I can climb that.
    Or a bull, I can ride that?
    Or fighting, building castles and defending them?
    Or grabbing toy guns, swords, and anything weapon like?
    You dont have to teach young boys these things they are drawn to them- by design.
    Or sports that battle and fight?
    Now do women enjoy these things? yes they can.
    but men are wired for these things differently than women.
    God created them male and female- not environment not just a social construct but created.
    III. God Designed Men Spiritually
    Look again at verse 7
    7 Then Yahweh God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and so the man became a living being.
    God formed him from the ground
    breathed into his nostrils the breath of life
    the became a living being
    We are physical and spiritual beings.
    Unlike the teachings of many today we are more than just the physical- we are made with a soul.
    And unlike teaching that overemphasizes the soul we are physical creatures the physical is not inherently evil.
    We are made by God both physical and spiritual beings.
    Men we are not our own the framework of our lives is to live in obedience to God according to his word.
    Second men you are masculine by design physically and spiritually.

    You are Made for a Purpose: Rule (v.5,8)

    Go back with me to Genesis 1:26-28
    Genesis 1:26–28 (LSB) 26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, so that they will have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
    Being made in God’s image- includes a likeness to God himself.
    mankind is moral, mental we are thinking creatures, emotional creatures, spiritual beings like we just saw etc.
    image also includes the idea long ago of a ruler who would conquer an area and errect an image in his likeness so that all the people would know who is in charge.
    Carry this over mankind was design to be God’s representatives in his likeness over his earth while he was away.
    Your purpose to represent the invisible God.
    We are to have dominion
    we are to rule over God’s creation as his representative
    This instruction is for those made in God’s image which are both male and female.
    28 God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that creeps on the earth.”
    When it comes to being fruitful and multiplying we know that men and women do not have the same function.
    The filling of the earth is required from both but the women has different responsibility than the man.
    the woman is able to grow other humans!
    amazing!!
    As we will see man has a different responsibility in the subduing the earth than the woman.
    Man your purpose is to represent God as you exercise dominion over His creation.
    Man’s design is to Cultivate
    Now turn
    Remember God made this statement in verse 5.
    Genesis 2:5 5 Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet grown, for Yahweh God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.
    the term cultivate
    means to work, labor serve, toil, cultivate
    Yet there was no one to work
    Skip down to verse 8.
    Genesis 2:8 (LSB) 8 And Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden, toward the east; and there He placed the man whom He had formed.
    God plants a garden- it could be a template of what it looks like to take raw materials, subdue them, and cultivate them so that they are productive.
    God places Adam in the garden- why??
    Genesis 2:15 (LSB) 15 Then Yahweh God took the man and set him in the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.
    Why was man made?
    Man is made in God’s image to represent him as he exercises dominion over God’s creation.
    Man is made to conquer.
    Man is made to subdue.
    Man is made to go out into what is untamed and tame it.
    Man is made to enter into chaos/disorder and bring order and purpose as he cultivates it.
    As God made the garden from raw materials into something productive and good so man is to go out into God’s creation and make it productive and see it flourish for God’s glory!!
    Remember why do men look at that mountain and say I can conquer that!
    Bull, other men at times, sports, bare ground, raw materials from Kenyon Noble or Home Depot and think I can build and make a home here??
    Ready…..design thats what your made for!
    Men are not made to sit back, passive, lazy they are made to rule.
    Now because of sin as we will see it needs to be directed in God honoring ways but that design is still part of what it means to be made male.
    What is interesting is that God speaks of certain characteristics in distinctively masculine ways.
    Look behind me
    1 Corinthians 16:13 (LSB) 13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
    Be alert to false teaching and evil creeping in to the church
    hold your ground in the truth of God word do not retreat even when the enemy is coming
    Act like men- means conduct yourself in a courageous way!
    Courage is a masculine trait
    In the face of fear overcome it by charging ahead not cowering.
    Be strong
    Men, look at me.
    Your design of excercising dominion includes taking risks, courage, bravery, laying down your life for others, fighting.
    You and I have been told that these are bad things, that men are portrayed as animals, that fighting is always wrong, that taking risks and taking action is not a man’s job. Instead men are portrayed in our culture in a bad light for taking leadership. And in a good light when they are happy go lucky wimpy and passive.
    No, men we are to represent God
    Men we are to exercise dominion
    We are to bring order to disorder
    We are to use our lives to cultivate and see people and God’s materials thrive under our leadership.
    This leads us to our last point

    You Are Made by God Responsible (v.15-17)

    Genesis 2:15–17 (LSB) 15 Then Yahweh God took the man and set him in the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.
    God took the man
    God set him in the garden
    to cultivate it and keep
    He was made and placed to do something and he is responsible to do it.
    Eve is not yet made.
    Adam has been made
    Adam has been given a mission
    Adam has been given a vocation
    Adam has been given responsibility.
    Throughout scripture man specifically is placed as the leader of his family.
    Head of the family unit
    Wife
    Ephesians 5:22–23 (LSB) 22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.
    Children
    Ephesians 6:4 (LSB) 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
    Whose responsibility is it to bring up the children in the discipline and instruction of the LORD?
    Church: elders are men
    1 Timothy 3:1–5 (LSB) 1 It is a trustworthy saying: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a good work. 2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but considerate, peaceable, free from the love of money; 4 leading his own household well, having his children in submission with all dignity 5 (but if a man does not know how to lead his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?),
    who is to be leading one’s home?
    The husband
    Who is qualified to be leading the church?
    a man who has a history of leading his own home.
    A man whose children respect him and submit to his authority because of his character.
    Adam was formed first.
    Adam was designed a certain way.
    Adam was designed to lead.
    Men we are designed by God leaders.
    It is not whether you lead but how are you doing as a leader because you are one by design.
    Notice in our text
    Man is responsible to heed God’s Word and if he fails he should expect severe consequences.
    16 And Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may surely eat; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat from it; for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
    God is man’s authority
    Man alone got this instruction and he is responsible before God to obey him.
    Man bears the responsibility before God if he chooses to disobey God.
    God promises severe consequences for disobedience.
    Men, you are responsible as leaders of your home.
    You are responsible for your children’s discipline and instruction.
    You are responsible before God for obedience to His instruction.
    Joshua 24:14–15 (LSB) 14 “So now, fear Yahweh and serve Him in integrity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve Yahweh. 15 “If it is evil in your sight to serve Yahweh, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh.”
    I am taking responsibility for myself.
    I am going to lead my home to serve Yahweh according to His Word

    Conclusion

    We have seen this morning
    The order of creation matters- Adam then Eve
    Man was Made by God
    Men we are not our own we have been bought with a price therefore lets glorify God by functioning the way he has made us.
    Man was Made Masculine
    Men you have the body makeup that you do because God made you this way- dont try to change that, dont try to wish you were not a man, be masculine
    Men we are not just physical creatures but spiritual creatures by design.
    we are made for intimate fellowship with God.
    Man was Made for a Purpose
    Man was made in God’s image to represent Him
    Man represents him as he exercises dominion over God’s creation
    Man was made to rule, conquer, tame the wild, when sin entered to confront evil and bring righteousness.
    Men are uniquely made and gifted by God courage, bravery, strength, risk taking, purposefully and wonderfully.
    Man was Made Responsible
    Man is responsible to work hard at ruling, conquering
    Man is designed by God as the leader
    Man is responsible to heed God’s instruction
    Man is responsible if he chooses to disobey God’s instruction and will suffer severe consequences if he turns away.
    Men, do you see your design?
    Let us be men and not shrink back.
    Let us give ourselves to those under our care to see them thrive and flourish like our Savior Jesus Christ.
    He died to save us as we have celebrated there is nothing more manly than Him!
    Let us follow Him as men.

    Why does Creation Matter?
    Creation by God’s design directs our hearts to bow in humble adoration of Him.
    Look at this passage
    Romans 1:19–20 (LSB) 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, both His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
    Creation reveals God’s Great Power!

    Creation reveals God’s Wisdom!
    Creation reveals God’s goodness!

    both His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen,
    So how am I going to approach Genesis 1 and early chapter 2?
    I had at least two options.
    I could preach it from the scientific perspective and on the back of the outline I have a recommended resource that opens up Genesis from that angle. It was wonderful and helpful
    I could preach this with a focus upon the literary emphasis of this text, which is not a scientific textbook but instead exulting in God as the Creator.
    This does not mean that what is revealed in Genesis is unscientific but its not written as a Science textbook.
    It is written purposefully and wonderfully to reveal God!
    So I have as my objective for each of us to bow in worship of God as we contemplate…..
    His Great Power
    His Great Wisdom
    His Great Goodness

    Day 1: Material Ordered and Delivered (Genesis 1:1-5)

    Genesis 1:1–5 (LSB) 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

    הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם

    Term means heavens or spaces
    Dual- legs, arms, eyes, etc
    God created dual spaces (heavens)
    What this means is that space is a created thing, space is not nothing, a vacuum or void, space is a real, physical substance but different from matter.- Amunrud.
    Material
    Genesis 1:1 (NASB95) 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
    the term earth or land here is not given its common usage until later in the creation week.
    In Genesis 1:9-10
    Now look at what is said about this earth or material 2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
    formless – no structure to it at all.
    void – nothing could live there in its initial condition.
    dark – there was no electrical-magnetic radiation in the original matter. This and the formlessness suggest that it was not in atomic structure yet.
    deep – it was all the physical matter of the entire universe. Everything will come from this mass.
    The land was liquids (waters) – the material was not solid, but a liquid.
    3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
    Light is Created
    Light is separated from the darkness
    Light is called day and darkness is night
    So where does this light originate?
    It could be God himself who is described as light in John 1:5, Revelation 21:23-25.
    John 1:5 (NASB95) 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
    Revelation 21:23–25 (NASB95) 23 And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. 25 In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed;
    I dont think so because…
    3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
    God creates this light instead of it being His quality
    Therefore it seems that God lit the land (earth) from which all things will be formed.
    Summary Day 1
    God speaks into existence
    time, spaces, material, light
    All the building blocks from which he will form and fashion.
    Which of us can speak and it be?? Who is our God?

    Day 2: Everything in its Place (Genesis 1:6-8)

    6 Then God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 God made the expanse, and separated the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. 8 God called the expanse heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.
    Waters refers to liquid earth/land materials
    Expanse refers to spaces dividing waters below and waters above
    God called the expanse heaven
    This is facinating when you read passages like
    Isaiah 42:5 (NASB95) 5 Thus says God the Lord, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread out the earth and its offspring, Who gives breath to the people on it And spirit to those who walk in it,
    Isaiah 45:12 (NASB95) 12 “It is I who made the earth, and created man upon it. I stretched out the heavens with My hands And I ordained all their host.
    Isaiah 44:24 (NASB95) 24 Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, and the one who formed you from the womb, “I, the Lord, am the maker of all things, Stretching out the heavens by Myself And spreading out the earth all alone,
    Summary: Day 2
    God has divided water earth/land material some above and some below
    God has stretched out the spaces and calls it heaven

    Day 3: Earth, Sea, and Plants(Genesis 1:9-13)

    9 Then God said, “Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 God called the dry land earth, and the gathering of the waters He called seas; and God saw that it was good.
    The liquid material is gathered together
    The dry land appears
    God defines terms
    dry land=earth/land
    waters=seas
    11 Then God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them”; and it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good. 13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day.
    The earth sprouts vegetation designed to reproduce with seeds in them- by design
    I take for granted seeds designed within plants so that they reproduce?
    Who came up with that? Why do they function like that? Why do some trees only release seed if it gets hot?
    Stop and think how infinitely powerful He is and wise to create. Why when the seed goes in the ground does it produce?
    Unbelievable!!!
    Summary: Day 3
    Dry land appeared= earth
    waters gathered= seas
    vegetation sprouted, seed within themselves, according to their kind.
    What wisdom!! What Design!! What a Designer!!!

    Day 4: Sun, Moon, and Stars (Genesis 1:14-19)

    14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.

    God’s Use of Signs
    God used a star to declare the Birth of Jesus
    Matthew 2:9–11 (NASB95) 9 After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
    The Crucifixion of Jesus for 3 hours darkness covered the land
    Matthew 27:45–46 (NASB95) 45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
    Jesus’s Second Coming will bring with it Signs from the Heavens
    Matthew 24:29–30 (NASB95) 29 “But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 “And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.

    What Causes the Seasons?
    Answer: Earth's tilted axis causes the seasons. Throughout the year, different parts of Earth receive the Sun's most direct rays. So, when the North Pole tilts toward the Sun, it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere. And when the South Pole tilts toward the Sun, it's winter in the Northern Hemisphere.
    The earth in combination with the Sun produces seasons.

    days

    defined as one complete rotation of the earth on its axis. Composed of an evening and morning (periods of light and darkness)

    years

    NASA- a year is determined by the time it takes the earth to complete one orbit around the Sun, which is approximately 365 days. This period is known as a tropical year and is used to keep track of seasons and time.
    16 God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. 17 God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
    Summary: Day 4
    God made the Sun, moon, and stars
    Purposefully for signs, seasons, days, and years
    God is purposeful in every detail!

    Day 5: Sea Creatures and Birds (Genesis 1:20-23)

    20 Then God said, “Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.” 21 God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good.
    What did God create?
    Sea creatures
    Birds in the heavens
    Great sea monsters
    2. God created
    bara- used all the way back in Genesis 1:1.
    Not only fashioned and formed but gave life.
    22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
    Unlike vegetation they are to be fruitful and multiply.
    Their are male and female.
    They are to reproduce and fill the seas and sky to the glory of their creator!!
    Summary: Day 5
    God made Sea Creatures and birds.
    Different than what has been formed and fashioned.
    They have life given by God.
    Sea Creatures and birds of all kinds.

    Day 6: Land Animals and Humans (Genesis 1:24-31)

    24 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind”; and it was so. 25 God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.
    Domestic Animals- cattle
    creeping things
    and beasts of the earth
    Why does God repeat “after their kind”?
    God did not form every species
    God did form every “kind” or family
    For example the family when thinking of cows is Bovine- this includes cattle, bison, water buffalo etc- they can breed and produce off spring according their family or kinds.
    But different families/kinds cannot breed and produce.
    Cats and dogs etc.
    26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
    Mankind is the only created being in God’s image
    Only created being in God’s likeness
    Our likeness why plural?- Triune God hint right here!
    Created to rule and exercise dominion
    Mankind is made in God’s image male and female.
    Reproduce and have children populate the earth fill it with Image bearers!!
    Rule and have dominion over God’s Earth
    29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; 30 and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. 31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
    God has produced and given food to sustain his creatures.
    God says it was not just good but very good!!!
    Summary: Day 6
    God made…
    Land animals according to their kind.
    Humans in his image male and female
    They are to be fruitful and multiply
    They are to rule and have dominion over his world.

    Day 7: Day of Rest (Genesis 2:1-3)

    1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. 2 By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
    God does not grow tired or weary but He rested establishing the work week as we saw in Exodus 20 last week.
    Created- out of nothing
    made- formed and fashioned

    Conclusion

    As we conclude Genesis 1-2:3 let us stand in awe of what is before us.
    Do you see God’s infinite power to speak all of this into existence?
    His Power is unmatched the one who created all of this.
    Do you see God’s infinite wisdom- the complexity of the world in which we live.
    He came up with our bodies and how they work, the animals, the insects, the plants, every detail.
    Do you see a God who is purposeful in all he does?
    No mistakes, no throw away, all purposeful, details matter to Him not chaos.
    Do you see God as the ultimate artist?
    He takes the raw materials, then forms and fashions them into great beauty and wonder!
    We are artistic and creative because our God is!!
    Do you see God as abundantly good??
    Why the order of Creation like it is? Why blob to spread out to land and vegetation, sun moon and stars, why fish and birds, why animals and then finally humans made in his image to rule over them?
    Do you see the order? The purpose? The beauty? Food was made so that when the animals were made they could eat. The food, birds, fish, and animals are made before man so that man will exercise domonion.
    All that was done before it had to happen so that they could all survive and thrive.
    God is so gracious who provided everything for his creation in the correct order.
    The God of grace who provides all we need for life both physical and spiritual life in Him.
    Does this not blow your mind? Does it humble your heart? Does it not lead your heart to a posture of awe??
    Psalm 8:3–9 (LSB) 3 When I see Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have established; 4 What is man that You remember him, And the son of man that You care for him? 5 Yet You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You crown him with glory and majesty! 6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7 All sheep and oxen, And also the animals of the field, 8 The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas. 9 O Yahweh, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth!
