- The missing ingredient.
Mark 10:17–22 ESV 17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’ ” 20 And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.Unexpected Idols lead to God’s Unexpected RejectionAre we asking the right question? How do I get it?Mark 10:17 ESV 17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”Jesus points to God.Mark 10:18 ESV 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. Are we focused on the right things?Jesus gives him a little test.Mark 10:19 ESV 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’ ”Check my record!Mark 10:20 ESV 20 And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.”Are we desiring the right thing?Jesus points to the problem.Mark 10:21 ESV 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”That’s too much.Mark 10:22 ESV 22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.Unexpected Rejection calls us to Uncompromising SurrenderMatthew 7:21–23 ESV 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’1 John 2:15–17 ESV 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.Uncompromising Surrender leads to Unexpected AcceptanceThe right question: Is there anything blocking my relationship with God?Psalm 139:23–24 ESV 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! The right focus: Everything I have is yours.Romans 12:1–2 ESV 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. The right desire: I want to know God and to desire His will.Philippians 3:7–11 ESV 7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.Is there a missing ingredient in your life? Are you asking the right question? Are you entering into your relationship with God or trying to please Him with actions and accomplishments?Do you have the right focus? In every moment and every circumstance, do your eyes turn to God?Do you have the right desire?Seek first His kingdom and lay up treasures in heaven.
