  • How do you react to the sin of . . .

    sexual immorality,

    impurity,

    sensuality,

    idolatry,

    sorcery,

    enmity,

    strife,

    jealousy,

    fits of anger,

    rivalries,

    dissensions,

    divisions,

    envy,

    drunkenness,

    orgies,

    things like these.

    This list comes from Galatians 5:19-20
    These verses end with:

    “I warn you, as I warned before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

    So how do we look at “those” who do these things?

    This is what our Psalm is about today. The Psalmist uses one line in this Psalm to set the good things of God in contrast with those who do not walk with God.

    Why is the Psalmist shedding tears?

    The damage done by sin?

    The pain caused to him by those who reject God?

    The fact that those who reject and those who disobey God’s law are missing out on all the good things that God has to offer?

    What are those who do not keep God’s law missing out on?

    The good things that sink into our souls.

    The greatest desire our life can know.

    The grace of God that let’s us know we are loved.

    A life where sin doesn not dominate and control us.

    Psalm 119:134 ESV
    134 Redeem me from man’s oppression, that I may keep your precepts.

    We know we are redeemed. Not just free of sin but we belong to God.

    135 Make your face shine upon your servant, and teach me your statutes.

    We know that God takes pleasure in us so we are drawn to please Him.

    Why is the Psalmist shedding streams of tears

    Psalm 119:136 ESV
    136 My eyes shed streams of tears, because people do not keep your law.
    Because he wants to say everyone know the grace of God.

    How does Jesus look upon sinners?

    Looking at the crowds

    Matthew 9:35–38 ESV
    35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

    Looking at the people of Israel and Jerusalem.

    Luke 19:41–44 ESV
    41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44 and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

    Looking at those who crucified Him.

    Luke 23:34 ESV
    34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.

    When you look at someone who is in sin, what is the state of your own heart?

    Towards other believers:

    Colossians 3:12–14 ESV
    12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
    You don’t get to be a jerk to your fellow believers because they should know better. Instead we should be all the more understanding as we fight the same battles that they do.

    Towards the Lost:

    Luke 15:3–7 ESV
    3 So he told them this parable: 4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ 7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
    As we judge sin as evil, we do not stand in judgement of the sinner. That judgment belongs to God. The law can judge crime but we are to seek the salvation of their souls. We are to reflect the compassion of Jesus Christ.
