  • Christianity's Counterintuitive Conduct

At the root of our lives as Christians is the goal to be like Christ.
Be humble when you are the only one who doesn’t have to be.
Forgive even when no one is admitting they are wrong.
Give mercy even to those who continue to fail even though you always get it right
Today’s passage is going to point to this quality in Jesus. The question we face is, “Do we reflect Jesus in His example?”
    Let’s jump in:

For it is not to angels . . .

    Hebrews 2:5 ESV
5 For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking.

Who has God given authority to?

    We find our answer by

Picking up where we left off.

    Hebrews 1:8 ESV
8 But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
    Hebrews 1:13–14 ESV
13 And to which of the angels has he ever said, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?

    Authority is given to Jesus

Then the author paused to give an important insight

    Crucial Note (Heb 2:1-4)

If Jesus is greater than the angels who delivered God’s Word in the Old Testament, then we should be even more diligent to listen to the Word delivered by Jesus.
So the author has turned our attention back to the central message of this portion of his writing. Jesus is greater than the angels and has been given authority and glory.
    The author continues . . .
    Hebrews 2:6–8 ESV
6 It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.”

    Exaggerating to make a point

    Hebrews 2:6 ESV
6 It has been testified somewhere,

    Quoting Psalm 8:4-6

    Psalm 8:4–6 ESV
4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? 5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,
    Hebrews 2:6–8 ESV
6“What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.”

    Made lower than the angels

    Hebrews 2:8–9 ESV
8 Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Jesus is the founder of our salvation

    Hebrews 2:10 ESV
10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.
Jesus became the perfect founder of our salvation.
Salvation cannot be purchased. The price of death can be paid, but salvation requires that someone else pay it for you. Jesus accomplished that in his suffering.

Jesus delivers us from slavery to sin

    Hebrews 2:11–15 ESV
11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
    Quotes Psalm 22:22; Isaiah 8:17&18
    Psalm 22:22 ESV
22 I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
    Isaiah 8:17 ESV
17 I will wait for the Lord, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him.
    Isaiah 8:18 ESV
18 Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.

Jesus became human to save humanity

    Hebrews 2:16 ESV
16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

Jesus is our merciful and faithful high priest

    Hebrews 2:17–18 ESV
17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

    Jesus suffered temptation

    Hebrews 4:15 ESV
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
When you are tempted, what do you choose?
When He was tempted what did Jesus choose?
    Philippians 2:5–9 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
Look at all that Jesus has done for mankind.

How are you doing at being a Merciful and Faithful follower of Jesus?

Is there a situation in your life today where you need to submit to God’s will and stop pursuing your own will?
Is there a situation in life where you may need to humble yourself before God and take on the role of servant?
Is there a place in your life where God is calling to sacrificially give of yourself.
Are you trusting in God to lift you up or are you chasing your own glory?
