Psalm 119ESV
- Know your role! What is the role that God has called you to?
Hebrews 3:1–6 ESV 1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.Sharing in the heavenly callingHebrews 3:1 ESV 1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,Hebrews 2:10–12 ESV 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”Focus on Jesus?Hebrews 3:1 ESV 1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,The Apostle of your confessionThe High Priest of your confessionJesus was Faithful like MosesHebrews 3:2 ESV 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house.Moses led God’s people Israel and set up the tabernacle (God’s house) as he was instructed.Numbers 12:7 ESV 7 Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house.Image of the tabernacleJesus is Greater than MosesHebrews 3:3–6 ESV 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6a but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son.Jesus is more than a servant, he is the builderHebrews 1:2 ESV 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.Moses was faithful over God’s house in an earthly contextJesus is faithful over God’s house in an eternal contextHebrews 1:3 ESV 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,Hebrews 4:14 ESV 14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.Hebrews 9:24 ESV 24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. What does this mean for us who share in Jesus calling?Hebrews 3:1 ESV 1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,Hebrews 3:6 ESV 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.We are called to be priests, to be part of God’s house. It started with IsraelExodus 19:1–6 ESV 1 On the third new moon after the people of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. 2 They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain, 3 while Moses went up to God. The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”It continues today with us1 Peter 2:9 ESV 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. What does our role as priests look like?Hebrews 3:6 ESV 6b And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. What does it mean to, “Hold fast our confidence”?What does it mean to, “boast in our hope”?These two things are essential for anyone who wants to participate in what God is accomplishing in and through His house. Our key versesHebrews 12:1–2 ESV 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
