  • Therefore

Our text today begins with a Therefore so naturally we are going to ask what it’s there for?
Last week we looked at the earthly picture of God’s house and how Moses served as a faithful servant but Jesus is greater than Moses as the Son and the builder of God’s house. We then talked about our role as the priests that are part of God’s house.
Today the Holy Spirit leads us to look back at these verses to see a key truth that guides us in our understanding of Hebrews and gives us a deeper understanding of our salvation.
Looking back at last weeks verses and focus in on verses 3-4
    Hebrews 3:3–4 ESV
3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.)

Moses is the H_________ and Jesus is the B_________

Moses is the House and Jesus is the Builder.

We see that Jesus was the one who built Moses into the man of God that He needed to be in order to be a faithful servant in God’s House.
Now let’s look back at verses 5-6
    Hebrews 3:5–6 ESV
5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

We are the H___________ and Jesus, the Son, is the B____________

We are the House and Jesus, the Son, is the Builder

We are truly a part of the House IF . . . .

    Hebrews 3:6 ESV
6b: And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
It is this point that the Holy Spirit is directing us to today. We are going to talk about that IF. But before we move on, make sure you understand what is being said here and what is not being said.
Who is the builder of the house? Jesus
Are you the builder of the house? No
How do you know if you are a faithful part of God’s house? IF
Is this section saying that I can be saved and then wander away, or walk away? No
Is it saying that it is up to me to do enough good deeds and be a good church member . . . so I can stay saved? No
It is saying that If I am truly a part of the house of God my confidence and hope will hold fast.
This then becomes a question of faith. Is my faith truly in Jesus?

If indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

    As we discussed last week,

Jesus is our confidence as the founder of our faith and Jesus is our hope as the sustainer of our faith.

How then do we stay connected to Jesus?

This is what our passage today will challenge us with.
    Hebrews 3:7–19 ESV
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, 9 where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. 10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ 11 As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’ ” 12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” 16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

    As the Holy Spirit says

The author is about to quote Psalm 95:7-11 and look carefully who the author attributes this writing to.
    Hebrews 3:7 ESV
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice,
When we read the Word of God we must realize and get used to the idea that the scriptures are the record of what the Holy Spirit has said to the people of God.
    2 Peter 1:19–21 ESV
19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

The Consequence of a hard heart

    Hebrews 3:7–11 ESV
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, 9 where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. 10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ 11 As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’ ”

You shall not enter my rest

    Guard against a hard heart?

    Hebrews 3:12–14 ESV
12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

Make sure you have a heart that believes in the living God.

Don’t be drawn back to sin

A believing heart endures to the end.

    The Example of the Jews

    Hebrews 3:15–19 ESV
15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” 16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

Why did God not allow them into His rest?

    An Unbelieving heart

Faith in God and in His Son Jesus is the key.

So, like the Jews who disobeyed in the desert, are you just along for the ride until things get uncomfortable . . . things don’t go your way . . . something easier comes along . . . a quick fix of sin seems more appealing?
Or is your faith sincere? Do you truly believe in the Jesus and trust in Him alone for your salvation.
As we approach the communion table, search your hearts.
