1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.”

    The Rebellion

    Jonah 1:3 ESV
3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.

Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth. 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”

The people, the king, and the livestock all fast and the people cry out to God.

    Jonah 3:10–4:3 ESV
10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it. 1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. 2 And he prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. 3 Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

    God provides an object lesson.

Jonah sat on hill hoping to see Nineveh destroyed.
The sun and the wind made Jonah miserable
God made a vine grow up to shade Jonah
God made a worm to eat the plant which died
Jonah became angry at God again.
    God tried to teach Jonah
    Jonah 4:10–11 ESV
10 And the Lord said, “You pity the plant, for which you did not labor, nor did you make it grow, which came into being in a night and perished in a night. 11 And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?”
God sent Jonah on a mission that he did not want to do, could not imagine ever doing, and everything in him fought doing it.

An Unexpected Mission Demands an Unexpected Love!

How do we get prepared for God’s Unexpected Missions?

Be committed to the Great Commandments

    Matthew 22:37–39 ESV
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

I have to love God more than anything and I have to love people the way that God does.

    Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Be devoted to the Great Commission

    Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Let’s put these two things together.

    What is your greatest love?

    How do you express that?
    How would God know that?
    How would others see that?

    Why would you make disciples?

    Because you love God.
    Because God loves them.

What would an unexpected mission look like in your life?

Where would God call you to go?

If he did, would you go?

Who would He call you to love?

What would get in your way?

Jonah had hatred, what’s your hang up?

Here is an example of obedience in people called to an unexpected mission.
