Psalm 23 LSB A Psalm of David. 1 Yahweh is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. 3 He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and lovingkindness will pursue me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of Yahweh forever.Our ShepherdJohn 10:1–15 ESV 1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.The thief, stranger, and hired worker.The thief comes to steal kill and destroyThe sheep won’t follow the strangerThe hired worker abandons the sheepThe Good ShepherdThe sheep know His voiceHe opens the way for themHe leads His sheepHe provides for His sheepHe lays down His life for themHe knows them and calls them His ownThat is our shepherd, now back to Psalm 23.Yahweh is our shepherdI shall not wantWhen I trust in the Shepherd, I have all that I need.He Makes me lie down in green pasturesWhere are the green pastures in our lives? They are the Word of God. The food that we eat and the truth that we rest in.He leads me beside quiet watersWhat are the quiet waters of our life? They are the times of cleansing and refreshing. The forgiveness of sins and they joy of fellowship with other believers.He restores my soulThese two act in our lives to slake every thirst and satisfy every want when we trust in our Shepherd.He guides me in pathsWhen I trust in Him he leads me.paths of righteousnessThese are the ways that our soul most longs to travel. These are the right choices we so desperately want to make. He is our only guide.For His names sakeWhen we walk in His ways, He gets the glory because only He can lead us to them.Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of deathThese are the place sin life where we become most aware of the hurt and pain, the sorrow and despair, the brokenness and death that plagues this world. Sometimes we charge into these of our own sinful will and other times we are engulfed by them. And left alone, we are lost, traumatized, and destroyed. But we are not left alone.I will fear no evil, for you are with meWe fear nothing because He is with us. The Good Shepherd, who lays down his life for us, will not fail us or leave us.Your rod and your staff, they comfort meHe protects us and pulls us from harms way. He drives back every dark thing so that we are not consumed.You prepare a table for meOur Shepherd treats us like an honored guest.In the presence of my enemiesEven with the threats and jeers of enemies all around, we can be reminded that our Shepherd loves us and desires us.You anoint my head with oilWe are refreshed and blessedMy cup overflowsThese blessings are more than we could ever ask our dream.Though the world tries to tear us down, the Shepherd lifts us up.Surely goodness and lovingkindness will pursue meBecause I know who my Shepherd is, I also know that He will never fail in His goodness and lovingkindness toward me.All the days of my lifeThis is true in every way for all of our days.And I will dwell in the house of Yahweh foreverSo my goal is to dwell with Him forever. To dwell in his presence through worship and walking in the Holy Spirit now and I will dwell with him in eternity when I pass from this life. I choose to dwell with my shepherd.The Good Shepherd gives us this eternal lifeJohn 10:24–30 ESV 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” Psalm 23ESV
