    This story is about a father.

    11 And he said, “There was a man who had two sons.
    The younger son’s

    Rebellion

    Luke 15:11–15 ESV
    11 And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. 14 And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

    16 And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. 17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.” ’

    The Younger Son’s Rebellion

    Immense disregard for his father and family - No love
    “Its as if you are dead to me” - inheritances are distributed upon the death of the benefactor
    “Divide up your estate” - completely dishonoring to His father and family. Brought upon shame and contempt.
    “I will liquidate your gifts for my purposes” - I’m entitled to what you have.
    Immense disregard for his own wellbeing
    “I don’t care about the cost or the consequence”
    Sells himself to a foreigner who worships foreign gods - gentiles and pigs.
    The Eldest Son’s

    Religion

    Luke 15:25–30 ESV
    25 “Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’ 28 But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, 29 but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’

    The Eldest Son’s Religion

    Immense disregard for his father and family - No love
    Doesn’t even address him as “father” - “look here, you”
    Doesn’t even refer to his brother as a “brother” - this son of yours
    “You owe me” - I’ve done everything right, therefore I’m entitled to what you have.
    Immense disregard for his younger brother’s wellbeing.
    As the eldest son, he was responsible for the wellbeing of his younger siblings.
    By his statement regarding “prostitutes”, it appears he had some idea of where his brother was, what he was doing, and what had happened to him.
    He completely resents the idea of his brother being restored from slavery and bondage to his lusts.

    Response

    To the Rebellious

    Luke 15:20–24 ESV
    20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.

    To the Religious

    Luke 15:31–32 ESV
    31 And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’ ”

    The Father’s Offer of Redemption

    THE FATHER IS THE MAIN CHARACTER
    Immense disregard for his possessions compared to his children - All love
    He actually divides up the estate in response to his son’s request
    He shows that even what he currently owns he fully shares with his eldest son
    He showers his sons with grace, patience, and love
    Immense love for both his sons at the expense of his own reputation and security
    he allowed his sons to disrespect him publicly and so terribly by requesting for his inheritance - dividing his estate was a public matter.
    he met his youngest son on the road and even ran to him
    he met his eldest son outside and even stepped out of the party he was hosting
    This story is a parable. It is fiction…
    The truth is that it points us to Christ , our

    Redeemer

    The elder brother should have gone out to rescue his youngest brother.
    Philippians 2:5–8 ESV
    5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
    Call to the rebellious and religious - BE RECONCILED TO CHRIST
    Reminder for the believer - Consider the love of your father and your redeemer. YOU ARE LOVED
    Hope for the weary - You may have people you love that are deeply entrenched in their rebellion or completely oblivious to their religion. CHRIST IS A RESCUER. PRAYER WORKS. GOD LOVES YOUR loved one more than you can ever imagine!
    I want to close with this scripture as we prepare

    3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.
