2 Peter 1:12–15 ESV 12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.Peter is emphasizing that we need to be reminded of how Christ “cleansed us from our former sins” (v. 9).All those things that I mentioned two weeks ago, that are things that draw us nearer to God, the qualities. When those are forgotten and when Christ’s work of salvation for us is forgotten, we become “ineffective and unfruitful”.We need to be reminded.Who has seen Finding Nemo?Dory: P. Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney.Near the end of the movie, Marlin erroneously believes Nemo is dead and abandons Dory in despair. Distraught and losing her memory again, Dory encounters Nemo, who has successfully escaped the dentist's office through a drainBecause of her amnesia, Dory initially has no idea who Nemo is.She helps him look for his dad, but they hit a dead end at a water pipe labeled "Sydney."Reading the word "Sydney" triggers a rush of flashbacks. She remembers Marlin, the entire journey, and realizes the little fish right next to her is Nemo.Her breakthrough memory allows her to guide Nemo to the fishing grounds where she successfully reunites the father and sonMost people sit on the edge of their seat with that scene.Peter knows us. He knows sinners. We FORGET. So, Peter is saying that he is doing whatever he can to make sure we are reminded. That is actually how the New Testament was compiled. Many scholars believe Peter is talking about making sure to collect letters, put together the gospel of Mark, and copy them and distribute them to the churches.We Need Trustworthy RemindersThese verses are so wonderful to help us remember how trustworthy our New Testament is.2 Peter 1:16–19 ESV 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,This is similar to what John says in 1 John.1 John 1:1–3 ESV 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.We Need God’s RemindersThis, really, is why these reminders are trustworthy.2 Peter 1:20–21 ESV 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.2 Peter 3:15–16 ESV 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.CSB Study Bible: Notes Chapter 3Peter may simply have been referring to the Pauline letters that were widely known and accepted as Scripture at the time he wrote 2 Peter. In any event, Peter clearly affirms the God-given authority of Paul’s writings (1:20–21; see note at 1:19–21).
