  • What we know...

The story of Pentecost actually begins back in the Book of Genesis.
You see this is the eminent happening here on earth but God directed each and every step along the way.
They would all be able to communicate with other believers, any other believers, with all believers.
Using the same unique language that they both understand and can act on.
The whole purpose is to give God’s people a language they can all understand and use.
    Let’s look at some scripture...
    Genesis 11:1–9 ESV
1 Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2 And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” 5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

    A BIT OF REVIEW...

The idea of language as power in especially pointed out in these verses.
So just a bit of catch-up here.
Creation and Rest are given in (Genesis 1.)
    Sin became human (Genesis 3.)
    First murder happened (Genesis 4.)
Adam is the father of Noah (Genesis 5.)
Increasing corruption on Earth (Genesis 6.)
The Flood and the aftermath (Genesis 7-10.)
Today… Overwhelmingly the international language in aircraft management, Shipping via ocean liner, Trains and other multinational transportation is ALL IN ENGLISH.
Can you imagine flying a plane from Tanzania to the United States. You speak perfect Swahili but you don’t know a whiff bit of English
Your aircraft ground controller has ZERO experience speaking Swahili.
What you have is a mess!!
Fortunately, International Aircraft Managers soon realized that you MUST have a universal way to talk with each other. Hence, English only!!
I do know that God brought the Spirit universally. AND But it sure makes flying a lot safer.
I do want to take a bit of time and look at the way that God initially designed language… for everyone.
    Genesis 2:20 ESV
20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
Everything had a name, Adam named them, the language spoken is unknown but Adam’s family and ALL of his ancestors spoke it, and understood it.
But what God had made, man corrupted. Because of this corruption the lifeline of mankind was cut short, from over 400 years to 120 years.
This increasing corruption of the earth and its people are a direct result of satan, in what ever form he was.
    Finally God had enough...
Yes, they had it all… they had everything that they need but… they wanted more. God saw that they would be able to solve any problem among themselves and not need Him.
In Genesis 11 they had the great big idea of building a tower… what would that do???
Well of course it would get them closer to God right?
Think about the times, in your greatest need...
Prayer, worry, sleeplessness about our kids
    Your finances, and retirement
Our community and the people in it with multiple needs
Our relationships with our spouse, family children
We all have at times sought a “closer” relationship with God.
You see God has been there all the time. Yes, every sin, every victory, and every sleepless night God is there.
Often times he just wishes that we would call on him. Other times he is standing alongside us weeping, for the sin that we are committing.
There is no need to build a tower to get close to God God was and is available to ANYONE and EVERYONE simply by asking. But they didn’t… They built a tower!
They took something God meant for good and instead used it in a sinful manner… But we would never do that...
God designed marriage -- but it has been reinterpreted over and over throughout time. There is only one definition… That’s God’s
God designed this world to serve us, His people. Instead we destroy and refuse to care about our home.
God sent the Ten Commandments and Jesus summarized them when he said
    Luke 10:27 ESV
27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
And we do everything we can to avoid facing the idea of
Loving God with our whole being… AND
    LOVING OUR NEIGHBORS AS OURSELVES
God forgive us for violating the most basic of commands that you gave us.
You have sent your Spirit to lead, guide, and direct our lives and we have flat out ignored what you have given us.
Holy Spirit push us back towards God, refresh and renew our relationship with God, with Jesus and The Spirit.
Our lives depend on language… Every single thing that we do has its foundation in language.
God had enough… He could have smote them all and decided to start all over again.
    God called an audible...
    Genesis 11:5–7 ESV
5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
WHAT DOES ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH PENTECOST?
    That’s a great question...
As the world grew, they wandered away from God.
God knew that a universal language was going to needed among fellow believers.
We are going to need each other. The times are coming and we are in the midst of them, where our world is in great turmoil. Our nation, our state and our community is in deep trouble.
When God decided to universally send the Spirit, it was not a Hail Mary on his part.
It also was not a new spoken language but a language of love used among Christians to each other as we practice reaching out to those who desperately need Christ in their life.
Fast forward if you will about 2500 years. There has been much water under the bridge. God has done great work, sometimes His people have come alongside and did great work also.
    Acts 2:1–2 ESV
1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
Verse 1 - They were all together because it was the Passover Feast… Followers would have come from around the known world.
Verse 2 - It was sound “like” a rushing wind. The Hebrew word is “ruach” a wind or a burst of air. Everyone present in that building felt this burst of air.
    AND MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!
    Acts 2:3–4 ESV
3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Vs. 3 & 4 - Tongues of what was like “Fire” came and rested on all of them. And satan has used even this statement to cause enmity and division in the Body of Christ.
You see Evangelicals see these and express this in a certain fashion.
Pentecostals and others see this from a different perspective.
And this battle only pulls us apart and not together.
Do all agree on the meaning and application of these verses… NO!
Our mistrust of our brothers and sisters in Christ is a stain on us… ALL OF US
    Verse 12
    Acts 2:12 ESV
12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
    I’ll ask the same question...
    What does this mean..?
The Holy Spirit came to all believers at the Feast of Pentecost. God wanted to bring us together… Instead in many instances it has driven us apart.
The Spirit has come to further Christs cause… I pray that he will find us faithful.
    STOP, STOP JUST STOP!!!
We have now 2000 plus years went down a path that has moved us further away from God… Isn’t time to re-ignite our lives in The Holy Spirit and be closer to God?
    HOW!!!
This is the multi-million dollar question...
As we… Sunnyside First Baptist are making it our mission to interact with other believers regardless of faith or denomination or how they think about what happened in Acts 2.
Our community of believers here is Sunnyside, Grandview, Prosser want to come together, not for the benefit of one over of the other...
But for the benefit of Christ and his people.
Peter spoke directly to ALL people gathered...
    He quotes from Joel 2.
    Joel 2:28 ESV
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.
God gave us back the universal language!!!
As I conclude this morning… and we turn our hearts toward communion consider what God is telling you, listen carefully for The Spirit and always, always consider Jesus.
AND just do something He will lead, guide and direct you.
    Communion
    Closing
Peter, the disgraced Apostle, along with all of the others. Where highly motivated by the Power of The Holy Spirit. To bring Jesus to world.
Peter at Pentecost preached as thousands as they came to faith in Christ.
He message must be our Message!
    Acts 2:21 ESV
21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
