5 God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
(μακάριοι οἱ πραεῖς, ὅτι αὐτοὶ κληρονομήσουσι τὴν γῆν.)
    INTRODUCTION:
Humility is not weakness. It is more than gentleness, for gentleness refers only to actions. Humility is much more.
The word translated her as “humble,” or “Meek” in some translations, is the Greek word, πραεῖς. It is that temper or character attribute of spirit in which we accept God’s dealings with us as good, and therefore without disputing or resisting. This meekness is first of all expressed toward God, then toward men, even evil men. It endures the insults and injuries which they may inflict, as being permitted and employed by Him for the chastening and purifying of His people.”
Humility is to be an inner grace of the redeemed individual. (Eph. 4:2; Col. 3:12)
    Ephesians 4:2 (NLT)
2 Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.
    Colossians 3:12 (NLT)
12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Let’s take a deeper look at this Be-Attitude:

    I. THE CONCEPT

    Matthew 5:5 (NLT)
5 God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.

    A. Humility is an attitude of the Spirit.

    1. Refers more to a condition of the spirit and heart rather than an outward action.
    2. Christ is more interested in what we are than what we do.
    a) It is possible to do all the right things without being what we need to be.
    b) We need to be reminded that our best righteous deeds are worthless in God's sight without our being right with Him. (Isaiah 64:6).
    Isaiah 64:6 (NLT)
6 We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.
    (1) A person can give to charity, go to church, teach, and even preach and not be a child of God. (Matthew 7: 21-23 ).
    Matthew 7:21–23 (NLT)
21 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.
22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’
23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’
    (2) A born again person may go through the right motions and speak the right words., and not be living under the Lordship of Christ.
    (a) Example: Corinthian Believers.

    B. Humility is submissive toward God.

    1. It is impossible to be living in a spirit of meekness and be living in rebellion against God.
    a) Rebellion is born of a spirit of arrogance.
    (1) The same spirit of arrogance that resulted in the fall of Lucifer. (Isaiah 14: 12-15.; Ezekiel 28: 12-19 ).
    Isaiah 14:12–15 (NLT)
12 “How you are fallen from heaven, O shining star, son of the morning! You have been thrown down to the earth, you who destroyed the nations of the world.
13 For you said to yourself, ‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars. I will preside on the mountain of the gods far away in the north.
14 I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High.’
15 Instead, you will be brought down to the place of the dead, down to its lowest depths.
    Ezekiel 28:12–19 (NLT)
12 “Son of man, sing this funeral song for the king of Tyre. Give him this message from the Sovereign Lord: “You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and exquisite in beauty.
13 You were in Eden, the garden of God. Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone— red carnelian, pale-green peridot, white moonstone, blue-green beryl, onyx, green jasper, blue lapis lazuli, turquoise, and emerald— all beautifully crafted for you and set in the finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created.
14 I ordained and anointed you as the mighty angelic guardian. You had access to the holy mountain of God and walked among the stones of fire.
15 “You were blameless in all you did from the day you were created until the day evil was found in you.
16 Your rich commerce led you to violence, and you sinned. So I banished you in disgrace from the mountain of God. I expelled you, O mighty guardian, from your place among the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was filled with pride because of all your beauty. Your wisdom was corrupted by your love of splendor. So I threw you to the ground and exposed you to the curious gaze of kings.
18 You defiled your sanctuaries with your many sins and your dishonest trade. So I brought fire out from within you, and it consumed you. I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching.
19 All who knew you are appalled at your fate. You have come to a terrible end, and you will exist no more.”
    2. It is inherently obedient and submissive to God in all things.
    a) When we refuse obedience and submission, we failed to live in a meek spirit.

    C. Humility displays a willingness to learn in any situation.

    1. Some of the lessons that the Holy Spirit has to teach us do not come easy.
    a) Learning to depend upon Christ for our needs is not an easy lesson.
    (1) These types of lessons are often born in adversity.
    (a) The apostle Paul learned in extreme adversity.
    (i) Poverty.
    (ii) Beatings.
    (iii) Imprisonment.
    (iv) Betrayal.
    2. A meek spirit seeks to learn what God wants to teach through adversity instead of getting bitter.
    a) Moses is an example of a man living in the spirit of meekness. (Numbers 12: 1-16.) (Key : Numbers 12: 3 ).
    Numbers 12:3 (NLT)
3 (Now Moses was very humble—more humble than any other person on earth.)
    (1) Moses was not weak, but had a teachable spirit toward God. Even in times of crisis and adversity. (Numbers 8:1,5).
    Numbers 8:1 (NLT)
1 The Lord said to Moses,
    Numbers 8:5 (NLT)
5 Then the Lord said to Moses,
    (a) The Lord spoke to Moses and instructed him because of his teachable spirit. (This same phrase is used 53 times of Moses in the book of Numbers.)

    D. Humility does not rebel in adversity.

    1. In any given experience of adversity, you will always have two options:
    a) Rebel against God.
    b) Submit to his authority.
    (1) Realizing that God will always bring the best outcome in adversity. (Romans 8: 28 ).
    Romans 8:28 (NLT)
28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

    E. Humility expresses itself as controlled strength.

    1. The Lord Jesus Christ is the best picture of this truth. (Matthew 11: 29 ).
    Matthew 11:29 (NLT)
29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
    a) As the Son of God, Jesus had unlimited power available to him, but chose not to use it.
    (1) He did use it on occasion.
    (a) To calm the sea.
    (b) To heal the sick.
    (c) To feed the multitudes.
    (d) To raise the dead.
    (2) He chose not to use it on many occasions.
    (a) To destroy the Samaritan city that refused to receive him.
    (b) To destroy the residence of the Gergesenes when they sent him away.
    (c) To destroy those who crucified him.

    II. THE PROMISE

    Matthew 5:5 (NLT)
5 God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.

    A. Conquest.

    1. The world says that the fittest, those who are self asserting, inherit the earth.
    a. This is seen in the attitudes that are viewed as positive by the world.
    1) Achieve at all costs.... give up family, friendship and faith to get ahead.
    2) Do your own thing, no matter what anyone else says or thinks. It doesn't matter whose feelings you trample on.
    a) Little League parents and coaches who sometimes fail to display meekness.
    2. Jesus says that the humble will ultimately conquer.
    a. Those who are truly meek are willing to wait on God, His teachings and His timing.
    b. We are to display a meek spirit to the world. (Titus 3: 1-2; 1 Timothy 6: 11 ).
    Titus 3:1–2 (NLT)
1 Remind the believers to submit to the government and its officers. They should be obedient, always ready to do what is good.
2 They must not slander anyone and must avoid quarreling. Instead, they should be gentle and show true humility to everyone.
    1 Timothy 6:11 (NLT)
11 But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.

    B. Defense.

    Matthew 5:5 (NLT)
5 God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
    1. Don't try to defend yourself, let God do it for you. (Romans 12: 19 ).
    Romans 12:19 (NLT)
19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord.
    2. The victory is an inheritance from God. (They shall inherit the earth)
    CONCLUSION:
In Acts 16:25-34, we see an amazing picture of the spirit of meekness and its victory. Paul and Silas were in prison for leading a demon possessed servant girl to Jesus and casting out the demons. Instead of just playing an arrogant and rebellious spirit, they displayed a spirit of meekness, began to worship the Lord Jesus Christ. The rest is history. The Lord shook the prison and delivered his servants, resulting in the salvation of souls. The souls of his jailer and his family, and very possibly other prisoners were one to Christ because of the meek spirit of the apostles.
The attitude that the Lord admonished us to have in our text is the spirit of meekness. Meekness is:
    1. An attitude of the Spirit.
    2. Is submissive to God.
    3. Is a teachable spirit.
4 does not rebel in adversity.
5 displays itself in control, strength toward others.
    6. Waits on God for its defense and victory.
