  • Intro:
Difficult times are here and even more difficult times will come. Paul has warned Timothy of men who are:
    2 Timothy 3:2–5 (NASB95)
2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good,
4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
    5 holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power;
He instructs Timothy to…avoid such men as these.
Instead, pattern your life after godly people like Paul knowing that we will be persecuted.
Evil men and the ir deceptive ways will get worse.
What we do then? We can’t join the evil. We can’t avoid it either. Because Paul says, if we want to be godly we are guaranteed persecution. So, how can we possibly handle this?

    Continue in the Scriptures

    2 Timothy 3:14–15 NASB95
14 You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Learned - by inquiring about something. These are doctrines that Timothy learned
Convinced - Not believing everything people have taught him but carefully examining the truth for himself comparing it with the Bible and deciding in his heart those truths that come from God.
Timothy learned the Old Testament from his mother and grandmother and then new revelation from Paul.
Sacred Writings — used to describe the OT.
childhood = infancy. Literally, Timothy learned hi ABCs from the Bible
    2 Timothy 1:5 NASB95
5 For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.
    Acts 16:1–2 NASB95
1 Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. And a disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek, 2 and he was well spoken of by the brethren who were in Lystra and Iconium.
Timothy could perceive that the things he learned were genuine by looking at the lives of these impressive women.
Note: the important influence of godly mom’s and grandmothers in teaching the scriptures. Even before Hebrew school, Timothy knew the Word.
Who did you learn from? Did what they teach you match with the Bible? Did their lives match up with what they taught?
The Bible can tell us of salvation and lead us to that salvation, but it is Jesus who does the saving as we believe in Him.

    Depend on the Scriptures

    2 Timothy 3:16–17 NASB95
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
    Memorize these two verses!
The Letters to Timothy and Titus 1. Resources (3:10–17)

Verses 16–17 are abrupt in that they appear without any conjunction or connecting particle. They are dropped like an anvil into the flow of discourse, which gives them special emphasis

    A. They Are Authoritative.

Scripture — not just the sacred writings but also the new revelation from the apostles and prophets of the apostolic period are considered authoritative.
inspired — God breathed. Exhaled by God. He is the source of the words that appear in the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts.
Not inspiration as used today. They are such an inspiration to me. Better to say expiration.
Note: The words are God breathed. The men were not. Men and women can’t be God breathed or then they would be perfect.
    2 Peter 1:21 NASB95
21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
The end product is what is in view. We don’t say, Paul was inspired to write 2 Timothy. We should say, the HS moved Paul to write down Words that were exactly what God wanted to say.

    B. They Are Effective

    2 Timothy 3:16–17 NASB95
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
Profitable — not just break even but get ahead. Valuable
    4 Dimensions of Biblical profitability
    Teaching — Doctrine, understanding
Reproof — Explaining where we have gone wrong.
Correction — What the right thing to do is.
Training — How to do the correct things.
    To the end that…
Adequate — proficient, the ability to meet all demands.
Equipped — furnished or have all the tools to do every good work.
Difficult times are here and even more difficult times will come. So, how can we possibly handle all this?
You have everything you need to be spiritually profitable through the Words that God has exhaled. You are fully equipped with every spiritual tool you could ever need.
It is not the Bible and philosophy.
It is not the Bible and the church’s traditions.
It is not the Bible and science.
    It is
    Sola scriptura — Scripture Alone
Sola fide — By Faith Alone
Sola gratia — By Grace Alone
Solus Christus — By Christ Alone
Soli Deo gloria — Glory to God Alone
