  • I. Live Your Life As an Offering

    2 Timothy 4:6 NASB95
6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.
Drink offering comes from the OT.
    Numbers 28:4–7 NASB95
4 ‘You shall offer the one lamb in the morning and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight; 5 also a tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with a fourth of a hin of beaten oil. 6 ‘It is a continual burnt offering which was ordained in Mount Sinai as a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to the Lord. 7 ‘Then the drink offering with it shall be a fourth of a hin for each lamb, in the holy place you shall pour out a drink offering of strong drink to the Lord.
a drink offering was poured out. That drink would have taken time and resources to make. You had to have the right ingredients, you had to wait for it to ferment, and you had to put it into a container usually of animal skins. It was not easy to make and was worth a lot. We might say, “What a waste to pour out something that was valuable and perfectly good!” It could have been used to purify water, it could have been enjoyed at a wedding feast. That is the point though. A sacrifice of any kind cost the worshipper something of value. That worth was handed over to God to show that God is worth more than the value of that drink offering. it was an act of worship.
Paul was being poured out. He had value to this world becuase of his skill as a tent maker, because of his mind as a scholar, and because of his leadership as a Pharisee. He could have been used in so many ways, but his value was handed over to God to be used by God for His purpose alone.
Are you a walking act of worship? Are you being poured out to God? You have value to this world. You could be used in so many ways. Your labor and skill can can be used make something of value for you or your company, your mind can be used to think of new ways of making products or of teaching other people. But wouldn’t it be better to take that value and dedicate it to God and use it for His purpose? Will you dedicate your self to Him today?
    Departure:
Jon Courson’s Application Commentary Chapter 4

The Greek word translated “departure” is a great one. It can refer to the taking up of an anchor, the unyoking of an ox, or the folding of a tent. Thus, in using this word, Paul is saying, “I’m ready to take up the anchor and sail into heaven. I’ve been plowing long enough on earth. It’s time to move on!”

Paul knew he was going to die soon. It is thought that he was probably beheaded by Nero (though we don’t know for sure and have no biblical evidence to prove it.
Paul saw his dead as freedom from this world not as something to fear.

II. Run Your Race to Win

    2 Timothy 4:7 NASB95
    7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith;
Paul serves as an example of how to live for Jesus Christ.
Perfect tense: Continuing action that began in the past.

    A. Fight Well

    2 Timothy 4:7 (NASB95)
    7 I have fought the good fight…

    B. Finish Strong

    2 Timothy 4:7 (NASB95)
7 …I have finished the course
    1 Corinthians 9:24–27 NASB95
24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; 27 but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

    C. Fortify Your Faith

    2 Timothy 4:7 (NASB95)
    7 …I have kept the faith;
    Promise or contract
To compete fairly in the games
To serve as a soldier (an oath of office)
Recommit yourself to Jesus today. Keep you promise to Him!

    III. Anticipate Your Reward

    2 Timothy 4:8 NASB95
8 in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.

    A. What Your Reward Is

    2 Timothy 4:8 (NASB95)
8 in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness…
Crown of righteousness - stephanos, the laurel wreath of the athletic games

    B. Who Will Give You Your Reward

    2 Timothy 4:8 (NASB95)
8 …which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day…

    C. How Your Eligible for Your Reward

    2 Timothy 4:8 (NASB95)
8 …and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.
You cannot believe in Jesus the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus without loving his appearing. This another way for Paul to say “but to all believers.” We will all receive the crown of righteousness.
